I, having been born in London, UK, in 1944, during WW II, from a Catholic raised Father, Germany, 1911, and a Jewish raised Mother, Switzerland, 1910, whose family came from Poland to Switzerland in 1905, and they both went to London in 1939, just before the war, found this movie to be quite moving, with us living then only a step away from being in the middle of the war.

Bonhoeffer needs no easy labels such as Christian or martyr. HE was simply a good human being. He was as flawed as any of us, but more driven and braver than most of us. A person like Bonhoeffer needs no labels. All we can do for him is remember him and attempt to emulate him.

Help me to believe.” God will give you faith and courage and strength to face ANY HORROR on this earth. “ Be thou faithful unto death and I will give the a crown of Life.”- Revelation Chapter 2 verse 10. Once you have Jesus in your heart, read your Bible out loud daily to build your faith, because “ Faith comes from hearing and hearing the Word.” Doing this every day you will change and soon you will understand the source of his heroism was the unwavering faith of Dietrich Bonhoeffer as given to him by God. An extraordinary human being and yes, a Christian Martyr, deserving of all honor.
I urge you first to read the Bible (in its’ entirety) and pray to God for understanding. I likewise will be praying for you. The Old Testament you will find God’s promise to conquer death and the New Testament elaborates upon how God accomplished it through Christ on our behalf. I believe Bonhoeffer would attest to this and he courageously displayed his belief through his death. After reading the Bible I recommend you read all of Bonhoeffer’s writings starting with the cost of discipleship. To only categorize Bonhoeffer as a hero is to misunderstand Christianity and Bonhoeffer himself. I have just watched this film, it is sad, but the hope was never lost. Bonhoeffer, was a Christian hero who followed his Lord when he had opportunities to have stayed in the USA. At Westminster Abbey in London is door dedicated to 20th century martyrs and a stone carving of him. A true Christian who followed the Lord.

That's not what Bonhoeffer said. He said the Black American Churchs were the only American churches teaching the Gospel. The white churches were preaching on social issues and how all the problems were the fault of one minority.
I'm glad I watched this because the important thing is the history though the acting could have been better. My family was from Belgium and those that were there rather than in the US or the UK were murdered. If there had been more people like Dietrich perhaps some would have survived. I understand it is a rough path to risk your life and those of your family and friends by doing such things.

I'm glad I watched this because the important thing is the history though the acting could have been better. My family was from Belgium and those that were there rather than in the US or the UK were murdered. If there had been more people like Dietrich perhaps some would have survived. Notwithstanding Bonhoeffer's picking up of the "sword", he questioned the virgin birth, historicity of the resurrection, said the New Testament was full of "myths", said that Genesis 1 was written because of man's "naivety", and clearly said that the creation account of Adam was a myth. It says something about the sorry state of modern "Christianity" that someone who defended lies and deceit is heralded as a hero of the faith. We read in Proverbs 12:22 "Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are his delight."
