    It had to be done because it would have collapsed. It was at end of life. All rusted out. In some of the potholes you could look down, only see some rebar, and the street below.

      When looking at the talks of these things what glares is not the govt it's the construction companies exploiting their contracts (which sadly is very New England with the money obsession/status signaling they like to act they don't care for. Saying this as a New Englander).

    Ironic that the champion of expanded mass transit ends up touting a mega highway project that starved transit expansion for the next half century.

      Nope not really. Considering to do nothing would have meant a collapse and people would have died. The American public voted for Transit to be shut down with Presidents like Ronald Reagan. So they got what they asked for.
