This film left out the most important birds....Tankers...they always launch first , without refueling the bombers and escorts will never reach the target. Nobody Kicks A** Without Tanker Gas ( NKAWTG).....Nobody!

The B-47 and the B-52 were in service during the same time period and both were scrambled during alerts. The B-58 Hustler too.

B-47 is such a strange aircraft to me. It’s like they took a typical fighter design from the time, and expanded it to the size of a bomber.

This is what Strategic Air Command practiced for for over 46 years, yet we never had to drop our bombs in anger all that time. Why ? because our adversaries knew we had the ability to strike any time day or night and no matter the weather!

It took the B-47 so long to get scrambled that by the time it had, it had already been replaced by the BUFF. The pace of technological development in the 1950s was so rapid.

The fact that this was publicly shown back was just to show the Russians USAF were well trained and very well practiced. I don't think the Soviets wouldn't have worked so hard on the ICBM and SSBN parts if they believed their nuclear air force was matched to the USAF.

It does make you wonder, how many would have made it to Russia with no fighter escort
They did a simulated attack on London, it failed not one got through
They did a real/simulated attack on New York, it was succesful, The US Radar never saw the V force coming (Vulcan, Victor, Valiant)
The V Bomber force reached its peak in June 1964 with 50 Valiants, 70 Vulcans and 39 Victors in service.

If the primary target proved to be too difficult then alternate targets existed. The first wave would likely get decimated but it would drop its bombs on whatever targets were at the extremeties. Once those nukes poked holes in the air defence the second wave would get further inland. The third wave would likely get all the way in. No one has ever conducted an air defence while the enemy is nuking at your doorstep. No one can say with certainty how it would proceed. Odds are those nukes especially old style multimegaton nukes would have an impact. Especially on fragile radar stations. The shockwave may not destroy a station 15 km away but it would certainly damage a few circuits. If you detonate about 20 2-5 megaton nukes every 25 km that's gonna create a big hole in your air defence. And that's all you need. Once a few holes are poked its over.

Would appear to be a Mark 5 nuclear bomb about 3:49, yes? To my knowledge, the only one with that particular shape, not to mention the IFI doors that are quite visible as it clears the bomb bay (not aware of any thermonuclear weapons that used in flight insertion).

Why did they drop the bomb with the emergency jettison handle? I mean, it looks cool and everything. But isn't there a normal drop mechanism other than the cool D ring in the ceiling? Also, is this the origin of the pull / twist / push auto destruct knob in every SciFi movie?

Most likely the latter. They were known for horrendous fuel consumption at low altitude. It doesn't make sense for safety reasons to put a plane on a runway it couldn't take off from in case the rato setup failed to ignite.
