Traditionally skilled craftsmen look for an apprenticeship so they don’t have to get a bachelors. Bring back apprenticeships. Modern education is bogging down the work force with people that only understand theory and have no experience.
I wonder how the school is dealing with the COVID-19 "shelter-in-place" craziness in which we leave. These don't seem like skills that can be learned at a distance.
Shouldn’t liberal arts core simply mean learning to think critically? That’s what I think of when I think of a good liberal arts education. Except usually you don’t get the practical skills that you get with a trade school, so it seems like a good marriage to me, no?
Skilled craftsman here, I'm in a completely different area of the country but what seems to be happening is that there is a shortage of companies willing to pay skilled Craftsmen what they're worth, not so much a shortage of skilled Craftsman. It's the underlying mechanics of our increasingly corporate feudalistic society. I'm not saying TOH is taking part in this but it is a widespread pattern in America. Regardless I appreciate TOH very much, thank you for the knowledge-base your videos always have been!
There is a shocking lack of diversity. Difficult for me to believe that in Charleston, SC there are not more than two black kids that want to learn a trade.
And why do you think that is? Maybe most of the black kids who might take interest haven’t heard of that school? Maybe most kids that have heard of that don’t want to pursue that and want to be other things? Want to see that school shut down? Force them to have equality of outcome.
@@elephantgrass631 😂Shut down? You are a very angry and very ignorant person. Wow. All I can think about when I watch this is that rich white people are going to be the only people who will reap the benefits of this learning. I'm impressed with the craftsmanship, and I get that the idea of the school is great. I however am upset that This Old House seems to have become pretty much exclusively a show for middle to upper class white americans. How about showing innovative, cost effective building techniques/retrofitting/ and affordable upgrades for normal houses... most people can't even afford a home, much less hand chiseled indiana limestone. You guys aren't in a bubble or outside of our political landscape. I hope you know that.
@Cam Adams Ya, you're thinking inside the box... I'm talking about innovative building techniques like 3d printed concrete, green tech, using recycled materials in innovative ways, etc. etc. I feel like most of what I see on this channel now is stuff that you have to be rich to afford. How about instead of gutting a million+ dollar Massachusetts Victorian down to the studs, we build a low cost sustainable home from the ground up? That would be cool, no?
@Cam Adams I don't agree Cam. I actually follow a lot of lower budget video content on these very things and they are absolutely fascinating. You want to see creativity? Build an eco-friendly house on a budget. You'll find ingenious building methods. What I am realizing is that "This Old House," by the name itself is devoted to retrofitting and upgrading "old houses," so maybe new construction isn't exactly fitting for the show. I just feel like more and more, I'm seeing almost nothing but upper middle class white people with seemingly little to no budget consideration. That's what I call boring, personally. On another note, who said anything about tiny houses, not that there's anything wrong with them... not for you I'm guessing, but still, I think there's a lot we can learn from tiny house builders. I think just the fact that you're scoffing at tiny houses tells me that you're kind of stuck in one way of thinking about construction. That's fine, we all have tastes, but I'm not so sure why you seem to be so offended by my request?
Fred Kennedy Because it’s veiled in racism. You don’t think rich/well off Latinos and black people don’t want this level of craftsmanship in their homes? Does it even matter what race they are? No it doesn’t. Your argument of eco friendly, retrofitting and upgrading was great. But completely fell apart when you started with the whole “rich white guy” routine. Identity politics will ruin this show. But if that’s what you’re aiming for, keep going. You just might get what you wish for and get them cancelled.
@Bill E. O'Nair Well, I wouldn't go as far as call him a clown. But if enough people rally, you can get this place cancelled. Then you get the equality that most liberals look for. Everyone will equally have nothing.

So glad to see this. Exactly what this country needs.
A little bit of spanish will go a long way if theyre going into construction
True that. But oops! Liberal arts college! The fact that you thought of it first before them makes it racist.
If this college was around when I was younger, definitely would’ve attended

ok~it is beautiful.and meaningful for us,your fan
This curriculum is outstanding
Who can pay these folks to work on their home/business? How much is a semester? This is great!
@PragaMaterUrbium Perhaps if we trap these students in debt traps we can justify raising the wages of artisans who keep historical preservation alive?
lol at the micro plate "chemistry"
This is awesome
