  • The video game backlog is a problem I think many of us can resonate with, especially nowadays. Although newer games might be constantly increasing in prices, the increasing abundance of bundles, crazy sales on almost every storefront, and some deals that you just cannot refuse, the gaming backlog seems to get bigger almost every day.
I've been able to get over the annoyance of the gaming backlog, and have been making some pretty good progress on it, and so I wanted to also help you get over your gaming backlog, and completely enjoy games like you used to. Let's discuss how to get over your backlog, once and for all.

I keep telling myself no more spending, but then a steam sale comes around and 400 more dollars down the drain 😅

Don’t worry man this sale I bought baldurs gate 3 and a few other games even though I’m not going to play them for a while 😭

Great suggestions here. The biggest thing that's helped me is treating time like a resource on the same level as money. I used to be convinced I had to beat every game I bought, regardless of how I felt about it. Now, every game I play gets 3-4 hours to grab me. If it grabs me, either with the story/characters/gameplay/visuals/whatever within 3 hours, I keep going. If after 3-4 hours I'm still not interested, it comes off the list and I move on. I don't subscribe to the "it gets good at the 20 hour mark" way of thinking anymore.

Well, I'm going to do it. I hate achievements. I loved gaming to see the credits, not 100%ing it

I get over my backlog by unfortunately not being excited by most things I see announced or that go on sale.
However when something I see does somehow pique my interest if I dont get it relatively soon I will just sort of forget about it until it randomly pops up in my head again while I play old stuff.
As well as wanting to purchase more physical games makes it easier to just not get stuff since a lot of games now are digital only.

The length of games too, my backlog has larger games waiting but I find myself trying to speed through them rather than take my time doing the side missions have the best gear etc.
I had to watch this to bring myself back to reality and that is to enjoy gaming go with the joy not to make it a job.
I do play 3-4 games at a time but make it different genres so i don't get bored

Yeah it's definitely like that for me too, such long games are daunting and you just feel like you should speed through the main story, when instead you should enjoy it. Your approach to playing multiple games at a time but different genres is also intersting, I might have to give that one a go, one day!

1st video and SUBBED. very well said. Ive watched a lot of backlog videos and you have a extremely valid point about not looking at howlongtobeat and how short a game is, that i havent seen anybody mention. From my experience it is true , but you kinda cemented it! Also when i saw u mention AUD is when i clicked subscribe cos a Aussie gaming creator is rare!

One thing you can do is sell any games that you are iffy or unsure if you want to play. I have a bunch of games i bought because they were cheap but in reality, it's games that im not dying to play. Even though you will be selling everything at a loss, still better to re coup some money than have it rot on a shelf.
Another thing to to keep things fresh is to play one main story game then have a mindless game like sports or shooters ready to play if you need a break from the story game.

At this point i’ve decided to just look at my library and play whatever im in the mood for. Do I wanna play a mindless hack and slash? Do I feel like grinding? Use my brain or be casual? Story? Fantasy worlds or modern/futuristic settings? I’ve been on a turn based JRPG kick after playing Persona and Honkai Star Rail, so I decided to finally play FFX remastered, which has been sitting in my steam library for years. Might move away from turn-based after that and check out the Yakuza series. I find myself touching more games in my backlog this way.
I used to make lists of games to play but I never stuck to them. I couldn’t help but feel stressed out over WHAT SHOULD MY NEXT GAME BE??? when I should be enjoying the current game I am playing. Witcher 3 has been in my backlog for the longest but I just haven’t had that itch to play a medieval game😂 But who knows? Maybe one day I’ll have the itch again.

One game at a time. Also turning off notifications for achievements/trophies helped for me with gaming in general.

I was looking at my Steam library today just to see if I could use any games in a video and found Witcher 3 with 0 playtime and I have no memory of buying it. It's awesome that games are more accessible to more people now but it does make our libraries kind of silly. Interesting video. I used to prioritise finishing games too but nowadays I just look for experiences that'll best hold my attention, regardless of how long.
