    Well said! Honestly, this is the best video that I've seen on all of RUclips, in regards to training birds. You two are SO informative and go into excellent detail, and all of your explanations make perfect sense. I am super excited to use your methods in the future, when the time is appropriate for me to have a parrot again. Thank you so much for sharing your extensive knowledge with bird owners around the world.

    This popped up in my RUclips feed today, so I finally broke down and watched it, because I'm getting a Quaker Parrot this weekend, and I was always going to wait and watch just before I got a bird. It's been a long time since I had a bird, so I figured a refresher would be perfect! I've been watching all is your videos as soon as you put them out, and your videos are part of what convinced me to get a bird in my life again. Thank you..
    I did want to tell you that as much as I love your videos, I love your family, too.

    I really appreciated you emphasizing to not overtrain your birds, I have been working with my bird for a few months and I have definitely gone over the 5 minute mark a time or two so I'm glad you guys brought this up. My bird is so attentive that I feel like she would be the exception but now I know not to push it so I can avoid creating more problems for myself and my bird down the road!!!

    This was the best information yet! You both speak so well and clearly. I find a lot of younger RUclipsrs tend to speak above the listener using terms that are not yet fully understood. And speak far too quickly and try to cram in too much information at once.

    I just wanted you to know that I first learned how to touch train by watching your videos. I work from home, and spend lots of time with my bird, Hopscotch, but I did not know how to deepen our bond, get him to play with the toys I bought him, or get him over his phobia of hands. I started touch training him, and he loves it. Sometimes he's more interested in touching the stick again than eating his reward. He has gone on things he was scared of to touch the stick, including (very briefly) touching my hand. He seems excited to be using his mind and overcoming obstacles. Thank you for posting these videos.

    My blue and gold macaw has come a long way this week with luring her head through the harness and clicker training! She is very eager to train now, and doesn't find the harness as aversive. I've taken it very slow with her and will now readily put her head all the way through the harness. I am working on duration now. I also listened to your tip on keeping training sessions short. I think I also was keeping my training sessions too long before. Now my bird seems to be more eager and motivated! Thanks so much!

    Hi loved the video! I have 2 questions.
    1. At what age should you start click training a parrot. I have a baby alexandrine who is 3 months and a half old. Should I start now?
    2. How many times a day should you train your parrot?
    Thanks!

In all the newer videos they cut out all the real good training advise and technique’s. I’m just trying to learn some basic things to improve my birds quality of life and our over all relationship.

    you mentioned 2-5 minute training sessions. Which I think is perfect information judging by my experience so far. My question is how many times a day or how long between sessions do you recommend? I know this could vary depending on your bird, but I guess I'm looking for maybe an average or your opinion. Love all the information and I think both of you are great!

    Hi. First, I wanted to thank you for all of the training and tips that you provide in each of your videos. Of ALL the people I have watched on RUclips, you two are my top choice for trusting what you say. (There are so many people out there giving super-scary advice.)
    I bought your One Day Miracles course and have talked to the Wonderful Wendi at your home office. There are two questions I have that I don't seem to be able to find answers to anywhere and was hoping you could help - I keep finding conflicting info. 1) Should you feed peanuts as a treat? 2) Should you remove play mirrors from your birds cage.
    I LOVE YOU GUYS.

    Truly amazing & so simple & smart!! I love that these videos give us a way to have a great healthy relationship with our bird friends!! I am starting the target training & my Woody parakeet is enjoying foraging!!! What a great way for him to be kept busy.. I was wondering how to get him to 'play' & it worked!! Hiding millet in his toys...yes!!
    Thanks yet again for sharing your great info to us all!!

    You guys answered the question about what you can use instead of a clicker. I use a beatboxing snare sound, since I don't want to juggle so many tools in my hand. It feels like a lot with the touch training stick and millet seeds already. I always carry my mouth on me and I can make the sound instantaneously when needed. I'm curious as to people's thoughts on this method. :p

I will use your video to start thier training. The bare eyed has already taken a chunk out of me and seems to be more aggressive then the Amazon.

    My problem is that I bought a 2 month old baby and then started reading. The bird care took so much time, I have struggled to know basic things such as how to set up the area for my baby. Because he is free flying, I used balloons to help keep him off areas. That worked as a baby, but now he ignores them. So without stripping everything in the house to bare walls, I have trained him to land on perches or the backs of specific chairs. He also has a gymnasium stand to eat, play explore on. He is only in a cage where he sleeps. I noticed that you keep your birds in cages all the time. We've decided to build an aviary large enough for him to build foraging skills, and muscles climbing. When I tried to use the clicker method, he wants to chew on the stick. 101 Basic showed me that you treat with something that is not part of their diet, which helped. I am struggling to achieve success with him with commands, and with other people. I have pointed with my finger, and he seems to respond. Is that OK? Thank you for your willingness the share your lives with others like me who are passionate about their birds.

    This video popped into my youtube feed today. There is one thing I am a bit confused about. If a training session lasts 2 to 5 minutes, how frequent and close together can these training sessions be? This would be particularly useful to know in cases of training new behaviors and reviewing old ones.

    Omgness - I just commented on another video asking for some guidance! Parakeet/budgie that flew into my life month and a half ago..... But those Qs were answered with this video!!! Yay!!! I do still have Qs though!!! hahaha....
    I am home all day everyday - screened in pool area - I have been leaving his cage door open to give him the freedom to fly about and he will once in a while - but seems quite content IN it - sometimes gets on top of cage !
    Diet is chopped mixed fresh veg & seed - then later just seed! I use millet to *train*! So it took a month of patiently working on him getting used to me & hand in cage etc to feed - and now outside of cage about a foot away for a few moments!!!
    I was SO excited but stayed calm -
    My Q - should I leave cage open... allow him to have that freedom or only when Im *training*
    Thanks for your time - and even more thanks or ALL these videos - FABULOUS info!!!

      Hi Lorraine, I know I am not the person you want to answer your question, but I have a parakeet for about 3 weeks now. I dedicated my 3 weeks in taming and training my bird. 1 week in taming (lucky because some took 2 weeks) and the rest until now is target training. I know my bird is very familiar with target training but I keep doing it because I know targeting is the basic of all tricks and disciplines. And regarding on your question, yes you can open your cage for your bird to have the freedom of flying everywhere, but atleast you should have a way on how to get your bird back in case you need to do something in urgent. In my case, my parakeet is afraid of flying outside the cage. Everytime I open the cage she stays inside playing. But thanks to my target training I can make him follow my stick outside the cage even its just a step. Is your bird taget trained?

    My ancient cockatiel just died last week and a friend found a lady who is moving to BC soon and who was paring down her flock of parrots and parakeets. This lady was selling her two young budgies (4-6 months old) I decided that night to purchase them. Of course she advised me that they were very social birds and “just loved people”. And that they were hand trained. Well... none of tte above applied. They are very shy and very much into each other and are not all that interested in my giving them treats or approaching the cage.
    I was really in a quandary because I thought boy! I’ve got two of them what do I do now? It’s been almost twenty years that I’ve had a new bird and I’d forgotten just how vulnerable a tiny budgie can feel. In front of a seventy three year old large male!
    Then I found you and Dave with your “approach” and your “targeting”. I don’t have a clicker but you suggested “good” as an affirmation. It worked a treat this morning! The mist shy one took to “good” and the treat right away.
    This video is worth weeks of master training! You passed on in less than a half hour a wealth of experience and teaching. Thank you! Most videos make you feel that if your bird is not hot to trot after you and your shoulder or arm you’ve failed. Dave points out that it takes what it takes as long as it takes and don’t over stress your wee budgie!
    Peace and blessings on you both! Thanks again!

    Dear Bird Tricks Team,
    thank you so much for your amazing videos and educational content.
    I got a question about clicker training:
    My 5-month-old caique parrot is a very curious bird. I got him very tamed and he likes my company. So I don´t have problems with him biting or flying away since he prefers to be near me most of the time. When I try to start clicker training him, he is so fascinated by the clicker that he doesn´t even care about the treat anymore but starts to explore the clicker and chew it up....that, of course, makes the training quite hard. What can I do? Should I hide the clicker in a pocket or so or should I let him explore it until he gets bored of it?
    Thank you so much for your help and advice.
    Best regards,
    Vera

    These little lovebirds freak out if I take one out but there going good..I’m hoping to get a bit of Freeflight training of some sort in only because I don’t like to think about the fun trying to get them in if they somehow got out...I use a spray bottle to ask them to come back...because they were super wild , I wanted to let them out but be able to get them in the cage if I was going out..I used the spray bottle but didn’t spray when they were on the cage..now they’ll fly to the cage if I shake the bottle..I’m delighted with how fast there coming along..I taught because I have to work with 2 it could take a year..but I found them at Xmas..we’ve had a vet friend who my daughter was doing her work experience with give us advice on feeding because they were close to death there was no food in the box they were in they were starving and very weak..we had to refeed slowly there having sprouts tonight and they are loving all the different foods I’m feeding...yep horse ..if find the opposite with horses where they play up with others I do nothing extra but they react better..

    For chewing, there's a product that's made for dogs that's called "bitter spray". It's harmless, just tastes bad, which serves as an immediate enforcer because they're less likely to chew on something if they don't like the taste. Is there a similar product for birds?

  • @scribble0073300
    @scribble0073300 9 лет назад

    I just got myself a 4 month old Pineapple Conure. After 4 days of trying to organize finances, and working extra hours to afford it. My family pitched in and got it for me :D
    I have previous bird experience, but never attempted to train. My birds either were friendly and loving, because I got them when they were babies, Or untamed because I was just giving them a good home when the previous owners couldn't keep them.
    So I had a couple of questions regarding training.
    My birds always have had unlimited access to food and water. If I wanted to train my Conure, how would I safely limit its food so it would be interested in the treats I was offering?
    How long should I let the bird settle in its new home before I attempt training?
    She seems pretty comfortable after less then a day. Falling asleep, literately everywhere.

      scribble0073300 The training diet. First, I would see if your bird will train for just millet (don't include it in any part of his normal diet) while having access to food the entire day. If not, then modify. We go into detail about how to do this via weighing the food and your bird here; www.birdtricks.com/miracles
      Train immediately.

    Question, where you mention not doing your training sessions where there are any distractions you mention going into the bathroom to do it. Wondering if this can cause some anxiety in the bird due to being taken away past the threshold of their "safety zone" that this might deter them from putting in as much focus for training? Especially if the bird is not used to being taken out.

    Hey guys, your video's are excellent! We'll be getting a 10 year old Macaw from my in-laws. She's nice to my Dad-in-law but hates mom-in-law (goes out of her way to attack her). I've visited a few times and talked to her through the cage, and she tries to intimidate me by trying to "lunge" at me. I haven't shown any fear and she seems to be getting a little bit better. However, how should I go about taming her once she arrives with us? I probably would be terrified having her outside of her cage LOL Should I start with the clicker & stick through the cage and just progress from there? Thanks so much for all your hard work and showing so many great examples. Oh and the Macaw I think is probably bored to tears at their house, there are no toys, she's pulling her feathers out (her chest is bare) and I don't think they spend a lot of time with her.

    Yo that’s insane how well you train your birds with these methods that’s seem so hard for a bird to grasp. Also is it possible to train a 10 year old military macaw? I rescued her from an avian shelter and we have bonded very well she only gets along with me and no one else in my family we have her in a 4 feet wide and 6 foot tall cage that I personally made along with a perch where she chills most of the time in the living room with the fam .she was in a small cage when I got her and she loves being on me shes basically only in her cage for a couple hours when I’m at work and is on me the rest of the day around 3 when I come home. I want to train her to come when called and possibly someday maybe even start to fly but I guess this is going to be really hard because she doesn’t use her wings at all since they were clipped before I got her :(

    once again thank you for sharing :) I would love to see more clips of your shows(idk if I'm the only one but don't understand fully what exactly you do, looks like so much fun tho)
    and thank you for a good explanation on the wave trick. I plan to move on to this soon, I'm working on the spin trick since its easier for me to catch him doing it.
    My question is do the 2-5 minute sessions apply to all training sessions? should a flight training session be just a short? also what if i want to go back to something the bird already knows and, as an example, show guests his tricks would 2-5 still apply?
    Also should you do only one 2-5 min session a day or can you do multiple sessions with enough time in between in a single day?
    and thank you so very much for taking ur time to look at this :)

    • @BirdTricks
      @BirdTricks  9 лет назад

      Al C A training session on flight should still be that short length because for the bird, it is a learning session PLUS a workout. Typically birds will get really sore and do worse the second day of flight training until they're in shape enough to do more. Asking your bird something he already knows for people is a bit different because it is a behavior that has already been learned and they're more willing to demonstrate it over and over again for a reward. What we are referring to by a training session is the learning process of learning something new.
      You can train up to 3x a day, or however often your bird shows interest. It just really depends on your feeding schedule and how fun it is for the bird.

    My bird can step up but I don't know how to get him to allow me to touching him without scaring him. I don't know how to go about it, but I don't want to force it and 'desensitise' him. I can't find a video for this and seem to only find posts saying 'once your bird is used to being scratched' or 'used to being pet'. It's not that he doesn't like it, I haven't been able to do it without him being scared off. Help?

    • @Simani12345
      @Simani12345 9 лет назад

      ***** Thank you so much! it's very annoying when people don't give details, but when you explained step by step it helped so much! I can understand now the steps I must make to get my bird to be able to get pet. Step by step allows me to understand what I need to do for step by step. This made me understand more and will help me so much, I now understand. You have no idea how much my bird means to me, and I feel like him not allowing me to pet him was stopping him from being as happy as he could be. I wish people would explain step by step more often, it's so much easier to understand and fills in all of the questions I might have. I appreciate this so much, thank you!!! You have made my day and I wish I could have found a video on this. Maybe I will make the video since he is not trained yet? It's much more helpful to see it without the end result. If I don't end up forgetting about making the video, I will give credit to you.

    how to train my lorikeet not to chew things i don't want him to chew such as cords and blue tack? i want my bird to be on my desk with me so that he can spend time with me rather than standing on my cupboard and doing nothing...i have a fear of him plucking and i think he actually is doing it right now so i really want to spend more time with him...when he chews things he doesn't want i tell him to step up and i would bring him to my cupboard to show that he did something wrong. He cooperates a few time (1-3 times) and then he knows whats coming and does not step up and begins to give warning bites..should i show him a treat and when he does step up i use my clicker and click then give him the treat and then put him on my cupboard? does this work?
    THANK YOU SO MUCH IN ADVANCE!!

    Hi guys, I love your videos. I have some issues with my bird & I am hoping you will be able to help me. I have an african grey that is 10 years old. I have had him for 2 years now. He used to sit on his cage & talk all the time & now he stopped talking. How do I motivate him? I talk to him every time i pass by his cage but he just sits there. Also the minute i let him out of the cage, he gets down the cage & will not stay on the cage, he walks into my foyer & wants to chew on shoes or molding. I give him plenty of items to chew on in the cage. What can I do to change these behaviors? He also does not sit on his perch stand. I would like him to so, so I can take him from room to room.

    I need help please. I received a 2 year old gray that the former owners were afraid of. Because of that, he is afraid of people! I haven't tried to force anything with Magoo. I will speak to him constantly, drop treats in his bowl etc. He still refuses to take a treat from my hand, and instead goes to the back of his cage. He occasionally tries to bite. How do I start any kind of training if he hides in the back of his cage and won't take a treat from me?

      Kenzi Blythe Make sure you only reward him when he does one trick and not many in a row, cue and wait and reward and maybe go back to using the clicker. Just make sure to only reward after he is cued to do what you asked and not the trick he wants to do.

    • @warriorxtman2
      @warriorxtman2 5 лет назад

      Yes, it's the same every time whereas if you said a word it would sound different some times and another person couldn't help with it either. A clicker is consistency that doesn't confuse the bird

    • @serge-alexisgiroux8739
      @serge-alexisgiroux8739 4 года назад

      It's psychology. When the bird does an action/behavior that is desired, you click (noise = stimulus) and you immediately give a treat to reward him/her for it. Then, the bird will associate the clicker noise with a reward (eventually can be only a praise or a head scratch) and will eventually associate a word you use (command) in order to perform the action and get a reward, thus "learning" a trick/action.
      I'm just a beginner with birds, but this is just psychology! Clicker training is also commonly used for dog training :)

    You guys are great. I had seen bits and pieces of your videos before. But this has caused me to subscribe. I am the owner of a scarlet macaw a severe macaw and a green cheek conure. the Scarlet Macaw is a 45 year old inheritance. but I did not find out until I did get the bird that he was talk to be a attack bird. he loves me but that is it. I have seen this bird in action. as far as almost costing me a lot of money by biting a woman's ear almost off and cause me to get a good scar on my arm from stopping it from piercing a man's jugular vein. I am really looking forward to hopefully your help. and retraining this old behavior. and what is funny is his name is Bubba. itz men call him big Bubba he loves me and will cuddle with me and loves to play. as for my severe macaw she seems to hate her tail feathers. and it seems like no matter how much attention I try to pay her her she still insist on breaking off her tail feathers. my green cheeks I've had the longest myself and he is laid back and just watching the world go by.
