They call it "phin-phia" in thailand and combodia. Its literally the same instrument with same playing technique. Can have anywhere from 1 to 7 strings. Main string happens to be made of copper, rest strings, sympathetic, are generally made of steel. The muaical tradition of india and thiland are well connected, and some of the instruments now endangered in india, are still prevailent jn south east asia. Its fascinating to see.
