This episode had several excellent examples of symbolism with Himmel as Sky. When Heiter fell, we saw the massive rain storm. Himmel was crying. When Heiter tells Fern about his lost friend in the flashback, the backdrop is a clear blue sky. When Frieren finds the Blue Moon Weed, she is framed against a beautiful sky, showing Himmel is with her and happy.
The rainstorm also relates to Heiter's name. Heiter in German means cheerful or jolly (or slightly drunk), but it is also used to describe a pleasant sunny day, similar to how in English we might say the weather is "nice". So while the blue sky is associated with Himmel, the sun and rays of sunlight seen beaming down are specifically associated with Heiter. (And of course, the sun and the blue sky are close friends.) But as soon as Heiter falls ill, the "heiter" weather disappears as well.
When this was airing the phrase “It’s what Hero Himmel would have done” became a trend in Japan. Parents even managed to convince their kids to do stuff they didn’t like such as chores by quoting that 😂
If I recall correctly, there was a young man that stopped an attacker with a knife. While being interviewed he was asked "Why'd you do it?" his response was “It’s what Hero Himmel would have done”.
When she first visited Heiter and Fern, she brought a bottle to pour on his grave and one for him to drink. He gave up drinking, so it's assumed that's why there are 2 bottles. Still fitting for the corrupt priest.
the editing on these episodes just so good, I'm enjoying it! and yes this show takes it's time, let you experience how even just the tiniest moment which is rare in most anime. even manga pages sometimes doesnt have a dialogue or a speech and just panels of different things happening, shows don't tell.
For me it was plainly obvious in ep 1 that Himmel loved Frieren, and through some ugly tears in the Blue Moon Weed chapter I said, "She loved Himmel, too..." The moment she said "It took longer than I wanted," and especially her putting the flower crown on that statue with the boring pose sealed it. And the score is by Evan Call (composer of the Violet Evergarden score), "Brave" the OP by Yoasobi, and "Anytime Anywhere", the ED, by Milet. And "letting the anime breathe" is a great observation, Nivi. It is, essentially, the theme of the show. Breathe and pay attention to the small moments.
Pause Frieren at any time to get a new wallpaper. I love Frieren's dynamic with everyone. She's an elf, so she needs time to breathe - and the show gives her that.
Fern: “It didn’t have to be magic…” Frieren: “But you chose magic.” It’s at that moment Fern remembered when she did her first spell, making ‘butterflies’ and put her on the path to becoming a mage.
Something I didn't notice on first viewing is the second bottle is the one Hieter stopped drinking when he decided to take in Fern as a foster child in the flashback.
Himmel didn't merely save the world... he saved it every day through every deed he did up to and including defeating the Demon King. Every place he set foot on, every person he met, he did his best to leave better off than before. A true hero.
A few years ago I laid down on the grass and the moment I looked to the side there was a caterpillar worming its way past me. I just got up and left the grassy area. Also yeah, the cuts and shots they choose to include to let the scenes breathe are soooo- they're so lavish with it all. When Fern hops off that little ledge in the forest they switch to a shot of her feet landing on the ground, and then the shot stays on her feet until she takes a step and turns her body around and then they move on to a new shot. A lot of anime just show you the main thing center frame, but it's nice when they take the time to shake up the presentation with stuff like varied angles and framing. (Oh right, I vaguely remember the fuss about Miyazaki talking about tempo and the in-betweens, harking back to Japanese theater, etc.)
One could comment on just about every scene, take a screenshot and put it on your wall. But this is my favorite scene in EP 2 where Fern hits her rock. Her hair blowing in the wind is one of the most beautiful animation moments that blew me back into my chair. I mean this is just crazy good animation.
The mirror sheen is because it’s this world’s version of a photograph, not a painting. A magical equivalent to photographs exists, and that is a tiny permanent illusion spell inside it.
Many of the character names are German words btw: -"Frieren" means "(somebody is) freezing" -"Fern" means "far away" -"Himmel" means "sky/heaven" -"Heiter" means "joyful" -"Eisen" means "iron"
I'm sure someone has already mentioned it (probably multiple people lmao) but I'll drop it in anyways just in case. A man in Taiwan stopped a knife attack while he was on the train, and he gave the reason that his idol, Himmel the Hero would've done the same. Himmel truly influenced the world in a positive way, in fact I believe the reason that their quest took 10 years was because of all the detours Himmel took to help people out (a part of the reason at least)
whoever is editing these videos are on fire!! there are so many moments that hit hard. glad you mentioned how great it is that they animate even the mundane moments!
I rarely subscribe to reactors but you made me. It's difficult to find reactors that add substance to what they're watching. adding stills, subtitles, the banter is good, the cuts from the anime are just right.
If you really like fresh bread, you should get a bread machine. Excellent easy to use devices. If you get one second hand it can pay for itself pretty quickly with cost savings too.
While the animation is pretty good throughout, the first 4 episodes feel like a movie because they were originally released and aired as a single 2 hour special -- so it was basically produced as a movie and was a labor of love by many of the people involved. You'll see more static scenes and some drop in animation quality further in where time and budget was getting tight, but the director still did a good job allocating resources, giving a really great result overall, far exceeding the vast majority of other anime series in its consistency over 28 episodes (25 if you count the first 4 as one.)
"It's what Himmel the Hero would have done." - a phrase that's been the mantra for a lot of good deeds of late.

@@DarkParn correct. Believe that happened in Taiwan

I really wish they had made the bottles more distinctive, pretty much nobody catches this.
Its the same bottle he had when he met Fern. The liquid in it is the same. Since that day he stopped drinking.

You guys will see, beautiful is the best way to describe this anime. Everything about it, the story telling, the music, the animation quality

Himmel is so precious! And Heiter and Eisen are so cute when they play in the field
What's impressive is that they maintain this quality throughout -- but also do other amazing things as well.
Tissues on hand... This is a person who can learn and adapt!

It guts me to realize that Frieren was looking at the rusting bronze statues of their party in ep 1 and it took her 26 years to find that spell
wow ive never thought about that!

I love the attention to detail in this show. They're often small subtleties but so meaningful and beautiful overall.

Oh, it's also, I would say, the single best animated anime ever. I mean, really, it's the poetry given life. :)
I agree, this show is very Ghibli-esque in the way it lets the scenes breathe and includes those little mundane moments.
Man i been waiting for this 😊
I love your reactions, plus your models are super cute!
