    Watched this with interest,
This is the way I have always grown tomatoes,
it's a very popular method here where I live and I think in Europe in general.
However, we do it even more simply :)
Simply tie a string to the top beam and when planting a tomato, bury the end under the root ball.
As the tomato grows, lightly wrap the string around it (it doesn't squeeze the tomato, don't worry).
In this case, there is no need for a roller or handles and the tomato is held very stable.
In case you already have tomatoes planted, you can tie the end of the string loosely to the stem at the bottom instead of burying it.

This is the part that worries me, I am afraid once the tomatoes are fully grown that the weight and the turns around the stems are going to be too much. I am definitely doing this with a couple of plants.

@@SoilandMargaritas This has never happened to me, the tomato is not stringed thickly, sometimes only in 2-4 places and the transition is rather ‘vertical’. It is possible that there is a little friction on the stem but this has no effect on the growth.
It is a really great idea to make a few to try and compare the two methods. I look forward to the results :)
One other thing that has crossed my mind is that in my case the tomatoes are in polytunnel and are not exposed to strong winds.

Charles Dowding, an English gardener most famous for his No Dig methods, trellises his tomatoes and other vine crops. He actually winds the vine around the string. First, he buries a length of string under the plant when transplanting it in the ground. As the vine grows, he gently winds it around the string (or the string around the vine) which is attached to a horizontal pole mounted in his high tunnel. He ties the string in such a way that he can easily untie it to lower the string a bit to accommodate whatever crop he is growing and then tie it back. It’s a beautiful system; very similar to yours but does not require any additional equipment. @CharlesDowding1nodig

I follow Charles (he is amazing!) I saw he does this with tomatoes, I am probably gonna try to gently wrap the string around the plants, however, I am a bit worried because a couple of people I know have had trouble working their plants like this (wrapping around) It's probably a trial and error to find that sweet spot.

I saw this method two years ago on Polish garden channels, especially in greenhouses. Everyone was very positive about it. I’m unfortunately didn’t implemented this method mostly because I don’t have handy husband as yours. But I thinking that you will be very happy and successful. Good luck.

I put hanging basket hooks on my fence and use this to hang a string. Then I bury it under the plant and wind the plant around. Works great!

I plant a lot of tomatoes and I know I wouldn’t be able to keep up with the suckers. I actually did try it a few years back and the tomatoes got sunburned. I did see you had shade fabric up.
There are many that trellis tomatoes and pinch peppers. There are trade offs for each in terms of production. I prune for air flow and that’s about all the time I have or care to do.

Yeah, I have about 25 plants (Plus the cucumbers and watermelons) and it does take a couple of minutes to make sure those suckers are not taking over.
