- A basic Zangief guide for Street Fighter V that goes over all his key mixups. It's also important to understand all setup options even if you don't play Zangeif so you can defend against it.

Ever lose off a single SPD from Zangief? We all been there... it's important to understand his actual options if you play against him or play as him! Don't forget V-Shift!
As a Zangief, the first mix-up is very telling. If we throw and it works, we will throw all set. If it doesn't work, just crouch block every wake-up and push us away or let us push ourselves away. The throws will be much less common and less dangerous than playing footsies against a Zangief that wants crush counters.
The jab spd actually has more reach than the ex spd. It's subtle but there. A simple test is point blank jump away, one stand forward kick (whiff). Jab spd will reach and ex won't.
Hi how did you do that peray move or if I not mistaken you said spray move? With ps4 doulshok?
@@Toomnyusernae I've noticed this and painfully learned from it in ranked matches. Good call out!
@@imohbalu Yeah he said "parry", but it's kind of a parry. You do it by doing Forward, Down, Forward (like a DP) and two punches. As far as I know, it only works when the opponent kicks you, because Gief grabs their leg and spins them around. Not the easiest thing to do, especially with catching a kick, and I wish it was just a hadoken (Down, Down Forward, Forward) and two punches move but oh well. 😋
Minor correction: Zangief's lariat can get good oki if it hits during the first few frames of animation while on the ground. If he hits you with his elbow instead of his arm, then he's plus after a dash up after a back rise. This can happen on a simple punish combo or on a jump in, lk, lariat combo if spaced correctly. That said, excellent content. I learned quite a bit!
Not bad
I am practicing with gief since all my mains are not in SF6 but it's so tough... everyone plays shotos and by the time I do the SPD after they get up they just normal throw me like it has priority..
I think I am just not versed in the art of gief quite yet
Lucia: Not Bad
It's fun to play the character that comes with the warning, "He can walk after you, so keep that in mind." Yes, be very afraid of me when I walk forward! Mwahaha! I actually had no idea that heavy air SPD was plus, so I appreciate the video.
This guide is...
Not bad!
Thanks for showing some love to Giefs main.
Feel like he did the opposite, he’s showing people that don’t play gief how to better beat us 😂
@@N3rdGamerProductions that's 50% true but also help some giefs with things don't know.
Plus most people won't remember a thing when on live fight😂 I hope so.
No one can possibly live through that 👍💪
As a Mika main, I demand more respecc (and some thicc tecch)!!!
Zangief needs more combos and normals like his close standing medium kick from usf4..that's all I really want for now
My man needs his Green hand back.
Gief can now convert cc S.hk after super thank to the changes of VT2. He now no longer needs EX to combo an air grab if he has VT2 active. This mix up is now potentially 700+ damage. Be careful out there.
0:16 - 0:19 Lying liar!!!!! You should be scared. You should be scared every time he knocks you down. Respect the grapplers, or get grappled.
Gonna pick Gief back up. Between this video and Punk's video of playing Gief defensively, it should make one int a very well rounded Gief Player.
Thanks 🦾 I’m about to learn Gief now
I know there’s a good reason but why do the pro players use mostly light spd I always assumed it was for better oki but apparently from this your saying medium and heavy give better oki and better damage and the only trade off is slightly worse range I mean there has to be a reason if people like snake eyes and itabashi use a lot of light spds just curious
The range difference is actually quite big, L and EX SPD have crazy long range, which makes it possible to use it even after the opponent blocks a few normals; they are also more reliable in case the opponent is walking back and such. Having said this, even pro players will use H SPD if they get the right opportunity, the only problem being you have to be point blank which is not very common unless you have the perfect knockdown.
@@mir2266 on top of that LSP has enough range to grab characters out of their pokes and sweeps. It takes a decent read and some practice but zangief can LSP lets say Cammys' standing medium kick. attacks don't just create hitboxes but often extend the "hurtbox" of the character ever so slightly forward.
very good video......
How are you doing that low air SPD off the standing heavy kick crush counter? I don't understand how to make this grab come out at the beginning of the jump? Are you buffering the 360 on the ground then rotating to jumping forward just as the heavy kick recovers?
Yes it's a tk SPD. You buffer on the ground, hit up forward as last motion and delay slightly the punch button so you're in the air to immediately air SPD
Give us banishing fist!!!
Why not mention V-Shift? you can pretty much denied all of his mix-up with it, i know he can delay the heavy kick, but one you do it, it's a new scenario that the Zangief player have to look up for, also I'm pretty sure that even if he catch you with delay heavy kick he can't spd you again breaking his vortex.
Good point about the vshift, but it functionally works the same as a longer backdash as far as throws are concerned. Also regardless of range Gief can always combo into EX air SPD from s.hk CC so if you get hit by the s.hk nothing really changes and Zangief can continue with his vortex normally.
@@mir2266 Yeah, but V-shift let you punish an spd attempt and that's massive.
After an ex or heavy spd the zangief player can dash in and do a regular grab. If you back dash or v-shift zangief can go from whiffed normal grab into light spd or ex spd.
So the v-shift just factors into the reads
I'm confused. Is there any reason to use VT2? You lose Zan's entire game plan outside of EX Air SPD
Your SPD does a million damage and you also get to combo into it (albeit only once). With the newest buffs you can cancel lariat into VT2 and combo into EX air SPD so you can make anti airs really hurt. It's a pretty good VT for matches where you don't have to deal with fireballs
@@mir2266 lol I haven’t been on the game in a while but that sounds terrifying
Actually not, VT2 can do A LOT of damage if it lands, but even a cr jab combo with VT1 can do this, along with the Oki that VT2 doesn't have, because of this, VT1 makes Zangief prob have the best 4f punisher in the game at least once per match, especially since everyone tends to jump or backdash after a safe move to escape a possible SPD. VT2 is only worth if you like to troll and annoy your opponent with a 300 damage grab, or if you cancel the lariat as anti-air into air SPD, but why would someone choose a VT only to land a single anti-air?
can you do this on honda
... not bad!
Thanks mir
As a casual player I can never understand how it’s possible to do spd without buffering it or jumping
If I remember right it’s been a while since I’ve played gief at all so don’t quote me on this I think the input liniency in street fighter lets you only do like 720 instead of a 360 and the game is like ok close enough I think you can start at forward and end at up but do it fast enough so that you never leave the ground
720 is 360x 2 though.
You don't have to do the full 360 actually, you just have to do half circle back and then press the button when inputting upback
Crazy how u can throw zangief out of his ex spd now🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️. They nerfed this character to shit
SPD loop? Just tech lol
You can’t tech SPD
@@smashmaniac2008 Uh oh 😳
Fuck Gief 💩
