Part where yall talk about how Ellie is growing up in a world where everything is taken from her reminds me of the song that Ashley Johnson covered, as Ellie, called True Faith. One of the lyrics is "To the childhood I lost replaced by fear. I used to think that the day would never come, that my life would depend on the morning sun." She never got to experience a normal childhood just nothing but fear in that world. Endure and survive

This is the most vulnerable we’ve seen from both Joel and Ellie yet. We know watching from Joel the desperation to close himself off to preserve whatever humanity he doesn’t want to lose yet and him breaking down in front of Tommy is indicative of how much he’s barely keeping it together, how this dam he built up for himself is breaking apart the more he gets closer to his new surrogate daughter.
Ellie, on the other hand, is a whole different kettle of fish. This is where her abandonment issues begin to boil over the more she loses her innocence; between being orphaned by her parents, being pawned off by Marlene, losing Riley, Tess, Henry and Sam, now she has to watch her father figure pawn her off and abandon her too? This girl can’t catch a damn break; it breaks my heart when she repeatedly tells him “Don’t leave me alone”.

“Dream of sheep ranches on the moon “
I find this line to be really deep and the message it conveys is really powerful.
When Ellie asked Joel what would they do after the fireflies found a cure, Joel responded: Oh, it's a "we"?
This pretty much says a lot about Joel 'not wanting' to be with Ellie after a cure is found.
Joel wants to spend the rest of his life on a sheep ranch, whereas Ellie wants to be an astronaut; two totally different paths.
When Ellie went to sleep Joel said "Dream of sheep ranches on the moon", which means that he actually wants their paths to cross! As much as he denies it, he now sees Ellie as part of his life, kind of a daughter.
It shows the duality of Joel; on one side he is cold and says that Ellie is just cargo, but on the other side, his heart sees Ellie as his daughter.

I never noticed Joel rubbing the watch with his thumb while chatting with Ellie-such a good observation. Pedro’s acting choices for Joel are so subtle and so good! And both he and Bella are so expressive with their eyes and have amazing chemistry!!! I love them! And their off-screen friendship is so pure I can’t! ❤❤❤

Idk if anyone else got the same feel but that shot of Joel holding the rifle while Ellie watches is like the scene when Pedro was playing The Mandalorian having Grogu watch was a great scene to Pedro’s most known characters and how both have that surrogate father relationship to their new kids.

The different levels of growth and emotional development between Joel and Tommy are a great example of how Maslow's hierarchy of needs works. Joel has been struggling to survive, keeping him from developing. Tommy, on the other hand, has been in a thriving community, so he has the security & safety to allow him to develop. Very interesting indeed...

All of the university scenes were filmed in my hometown Calgary. It was so weird seeing places I used to sit and study destroyed like that. Also, that amphitheater is usually full of cobra-chickens (aka geese) rather than monkeys.

I need this show to issue an apology for the sadness I acquired while having it rewatch Henry and Sam die. I can’t manage seeing that more than once, lol.
Also good episode for Joel. Pedro did such a good job with his acting, it’s so clear all though he’s our antagonist he’s still very flawed. It’s sad to know over 20 years later he still hasn’t managed to move forward and find peace within himself, so it makes his new found relationship with Ellie even better because at least now he can channel all that into taking care of her.

This episode did a good job showing Joel's PTSD, 20 years later and it is stilling affecting him. So sad. I really like their growth in this episode. No giraffe but we got monkeys! Looking forward to next week.

I lost my daughter to cancer. Sometimes we put walls, because we feel guilty, and deeply tainted. That we prefer people to stay away from what we have to offer. Which is nothing good. It's not a matter of it being ok or not.. it's survival and it's necessary.

It always interesting hearing people talk about the scene where Jole says "You don't know lose" Because everyone always says something along the lines thats he's being a dick.Don't get me wrong she's lost people in her life but the lose joles felt is a different kind of lose. Most people can't imagine the pain it is to loose a child to loose someone that is literally part of yourself. To loose someone that you have put your heart and soul into to make sure that that they are taken care of that they are happy and healthy. But not only did he loose is daughter but he held her in his arms as she died. Not only did he hear but also felt the life leave her body I can't imagine the heart breaking pain he felt on that day.
