Watching the cleanup and nicely raked bare ground, it's like putting a blank canvas in front of two artists and wondering what kind of masterpiece they'll come up with this time.
I have found that Crushed Red Pepper Flakes like you sprinkle on pizza are a great squirrel deterrent. They may dig once, just scratching the surface, but they never come back
I wonder if that would work for raccoons. We frequently have raccoons coming in overnight, digging up plants to get worms and other tasty morsels out of the soil and leaving the plants to die, so I am out there every morning at sun up in my pajamas replanting my poor babies.
@@carolynlingor I am not sure. I plant my tulips in containers and I know that squirrels love 😍 tulip bulbs and absolutely hate spicy pepper. I haven't lost my tulip bulbs to squirrels since I started doing this.
Bulb trenches, niece. I do similar, dig the area free of other pants, arrange bulbs and cover as you are doing. Bulbs coming back, unexpected, though bulbs theoretically have everything they plants needed soil is also meaningful factor. Your have fertile and potent land and everything related to plants works better. Have a nice day.
A Maple got me into gardening. The roots had uplifted my concrete entry slab keeping my back door from opening. As the slab was removed it revealed 3” roots everywhere.
Great question! I’ve often wondered the same thing. I’ve heard of people leaving sunflowers out for the birds so why not smaller seed heads? I hope he answers this one!
I have a question, Jim. I'm in California zone 8b where almost all salvias are perennials and some are evergreen, specifically Mystic Spires and Rockin Playing the Blues. They have gotten very floppy and finally stopped blooming because we've had some freezing overnight temperatures. Can I go ahead and cut them to the ground now or should I wait until spring to clean them up so the canopy protects them from any future freezes? Thanks.
My lawn is zoysia with lots of horrible Bermuda in it. How would I eliminate all of it to make beautiful flowerbeds? The Bermuda rhizomes are very deep. I live in north Louisiana.
I Garden in California zone 9B and I never chill my bulbs (except for tulips) Just be sure to not overwater your allium bulbs because they are prone to rotting very easily. 💙💚💛🧡💜 Liz
Will you leave the bulbs there permanently for them to come back year after year. Once they have bloomed and you have trimmed them will they be ok for the rest of summer & fall when you water the surrounding summer plants. Like they won't rot or anything?
I love the random cut to Holly half way through. 😂❤
Thanks for the video! 🌱🪴🌱

Never heard of bulb trenches, really looking forward to seeing those show off planted so close!

I know what you mean by discovering still existing prior tree roots in planting areas! 😉

If I cut off the seedheads (e.g. Echinacea), and just place them on the ground in place, will the birds still find and use them?

How long to the tulips need to chill? Are fridge temps cold enough? (7b/8a Greensboro)
I meant to say it. The fridge is perfect for around 6 weeks.
Hi Jim and Stephany 👋 Thank you for sharing another great video. 😊

Do i need to chill allium bulbs before planting for zone 8b/9?
I didn’t chill mine and they came up great! Zone 8 GA
My agapanthus has not faired well- comes up too early then gets frosted !
