Hi Friends, today I am painting a landscape, overcast day on Goulburn River Australia. My main focus is on painting light and atmosphere. But, the focus of this demonstration is on how to create quiet and busy spaces for the viewer to stay ingaged and not too overwhelmed with the subject. It is critical here to achieve correct tonal values and use correct techniques. In full demo on Patreon I explain all of this in more details on where, why and how to use these techniques. In general I am painting in layers: first wash - light values, second wash - middle values and finally added all the darks and highlights. If you want to see the full demo, to learn more or just paint along and have fun please find me on Patreon. If you need feedback on your work I have Facebook group to support you along the way. Hope to see you there.

Nice painting. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks inspired by Zbukvic.

Thank you! No, not at all. It's just an Australian landscape in Victoria, the colors here are very different to the rest of the world. It becomes a little said that a painting of an Australian landscape becomes instantly associated with JZ. Yes, he is well known online, but If you look at other Australian painters, who is more modest with their social media presence, yet really great, they all look similar just because of the "Australia specific" colors. The type of trees and foliage - Australian gum trees with warm grey or cool grey messy foliage; the land - grey/green/yellow with pinkish/brownish hues, etc. Colors evoke emotions, this is the first thing we respond to. It's normal. So, no :), it's inspired by the landscape itself. Ill try to put together a video to give a shout-out to Australian painters, we are so fortunate here with an amazing quality of artists all in one spot and I feel like they need to be more recognized.

@@nvfineartstudio7296 Thanks for the reply. I'm quite new to painting and watercolor, so in my naivete, I suppose it's not surprising that I would reference those with a large presence. All that said, I didn't know this was an Australian landscape, but all of what you said makes sense. I love the contrast between the muted and suggestive background with the loose thickly painted gum trees. The light and atmosphere is beautiful, and I feel that these types of Australian landscapes lend themselves very well to watercolor. That would be great if you highlighted more Australian artists and artwork. I look forward to learning them!

As an Australian I totally agree with what you say Nina. You are an amazing artist and a real credit to our wonderful Australian landscape.
