You can also make a back roll sweep or shoot for a triangle

Yes, it all depends of the opponents reaction. But they are good options. All the best!

    Why not finish the Omoplata?

I realize your question is two years old, but since nobody here answered it, I will for posterity. Often, someone will post with their opposite hand on the mat and/or posture up hard, which makes the Omoplata impossible. You have to be able to get their shoulder to the mat to finish it. If you can't, then you sweep them instead.
That being said, instead of going to side control as he does in the video, I like to backstep to full mount, or backstep and go straight for a mounted triangle. I'm sure he knows that and is keeping it simple for the video, I just thought I'd mention it.

why do you need a sweep when you can submit someone?

    • @ThomasLisboa

For many reasons. But basically when you have your arm inside (like the video) you have the chance to sweep or finish your opponent. However, when you have your arm out side I would search for the classic omoplata submission. Have a good training buddy, all the best!

Can I assume that the sweep is mostly for if your opponent has good posture and is being difficult to flatten out to get the finish. Before the sweep your position is dominant. Get the sweep and land in another dominant position that has more potential for attacks? Also once you finish the sweep movement it seems like you would be setup nicely to s mount by moving North. I’ve only been training for 10 months so I’m probably wrong lol

Lol doubting a black belt of Thomas’ caliber... trust, this technique should be taught hand in hand with the basic omoplata. It works great!
