      Same here. I was the only one of my friends that had the +3. If I remember correctly you were able to connect a cassette player to play the +2 games though. Can't remember many of the games I had other than Robin Hood. After having the Sinclair for a year or 2 I eventually got an Amiga 1200. That blew my mind. I loved Cannon Fodder 1 and 2, Sensible Soccer, Syndicate and Theme Park.

      @@ant7699 exactly this. My brother and I once asked if we could have an Amiga if we combined both our birthday and Christmas presents for this year and next! Seeing this takes me back to my childhood. One of my cousins had the Timex 2048, another had the Phillips MSX, and the other had the Commodore 16. I had friends with the Commodore 64 and a fortunate one with the Commodore Amiga 500. It allowed me to see all these computers. Excellent overview. The added musical abilities of this machine really made quite a few of the 128k titles very good. Superior to their 48K counterparts.
    My functioning ZX Spectrum also is a ZX Spectrum +3, the sound is very low on it so I reckon I need to check it and perhaps replace some of the caps. Always loved the bright colours on the ZX Spectrum, much more vibrant than the C64's palette. Always was playing on both machines, we had a C64 back home but played a ton on a friend's Speccy. The high-res aspect of most of the Speccy graphics - despite the colour clash - was very appealing.
    Quite partial to this model and the Amstrad CPC 6128

    • @itsaPIXELthing

    Superb video Pedro. It reminds me that some games were actually better to play on the Speccy than the C64. I had a 64 at the time, so I was blindfolded (blinkered) in my views of spectrum games, but now I see I was wrong. The loading times you point out were a major issue back then, but now its very easy thanks to the community! I had a friend with a +3 back in the day, and to load from tape he used bare wires connected to his stereo cassette deck, and it used to take as long as C64 games - too long! He had the lightgun and a few games, and today its hard to get the real experience without a CRT.
    I also find it refreshing to not have a list of names at the end of the video to thank. I know you have some superb patreons listed in the description, but I get bored watching endless scrolling names, even when I'm one of the people listed, so please dont start to do that, as it becomes about who can get the most shout outs on the most channels.

    • @itsaPIXELthing
      @itsaPIXELthing  6 лет назад

      Thank you so much for leaving your thoughts and opinion, Daniel! Appreciate it! :)
      Here in Portugal the c64 wasn't as popular as the speccy. I had only one friend that owned one and I recall playing so many awesome c64 games way better than the spectrum versions :)
      Patrons are awesome and I believe that they're giving us their money so that we can continue to do what we do and not to place their names in every single video. Even so, and from time to time (special occasions, channel anniversary, etc), I must shout their names out ;)
      Cheers! Have a great weekend!

    A great, enthusiastic video about the ultimate step in the ZX Spectrum's evolution.
    The +3 was a nice machine but just look at the homungous proportions compared to the iconic rubber-keyed wonder it once was.
    I'll probably never get why tape loading was considered unreliable on the ZX Spectrum.
    I only had a somwhat decent tape player and if loading ever failed it was because of very bad recording quality (Jangler springs to mind) or because of insane speed loaders (Way of the Tiger, anyone?). In general, the ZX Spectrum loaded programs just fine!
    Some time ago, I unearthed a program I wrote for my Latin class at German high school. After more than 30 years this Latin verb grammar trainer loaded just fine.
    So if you keep your ZX Spectrum tapes in a dry place away from direct sunlight they will probably load reliably for decades.
    Again, this is a great video about the ZX Spectrum +3. Thanks for making it and sharing it on RUclips.

    We had a 48K for years until one day in the early 90's, we found a +3 and a massive box full of games at a car-boot sale for £30! Jackpot!!! Then I got a Multiface 3, which allowed you to load from tape and then dump the contents of the RAM to floppy disk, so that you could load that game from disk from then onwards. Good times!

      It's a pity they couldn't unify the product lines. Granted, it would have been a significant technical challenge but not impossible. A 6128 that could boot into Spectrum mode might have kept Amstrad product line going just a little bit longer.

      O prazer é todo meu, partilhar estas memórias que devem ser para sempre recordadas! :) Foi uma era que me marcou bastante, uma época da minha juventude em que frequentava as arcadas e, de seguida, ia ao quiosque mais próximo (ou loja de eletrónica) ver se determinado jogo já tinha sido convertido para o Spectrum ;) Quando esta máquina específica (o Spectrum +3) surgiu, já a pirataria estava a desaparecer. Aliás, não haviam jogos piratas em disquete para esta máquina, o que tornava a cena bastante dispendiosa e apenas os "putos" mais endinheirados tinham acesso a estas máquinas. Como indiquei no vídeo, na altura este Spectrum custava perto de 700 euros quando foi lançado. Uma pequena fortuna!
      Grande abraço, Simão! Obrigado por assistires!

      Yes, the +2A and +2B could theoretically run CP/M as well, provided you could add a disk interface + a drive.
      The very earliest issues of the +2A even had the space to solder in those missing chips that made up the disk interface, since it had the same printed circuit board as the +3.

    Today I still have my Speccy 48K (rubber keyboard) working as new. My +3 is nearly dead now having image issues and the disk reader dead. The +2A could also be enhanced with a Disc Drive. In fact their motherboard was exactly the same with the exact same internal Disc connection, basically it is physically exactly as a +3 and the difference was just cosmetic (cosmetic meaning they took the Drive off and put a cheaper cassette reader). To reduce costs +3B didn't have an external cassette reader connection unlike the original +3.

    Excelente video. Muitos jogos que jogava apareceram! Eu tinha um timex2068, mas nunca consegui encontrar cartuchos para alem dos que vieram com o computador. Houve uma altura, pre-internet, que andei à procura mas somente as cassetes e ocasionais disketes haviam nas lojas.

      O mercado dos cartuchos para os Timex era ainda mais restrito do que o das disquetes. Carlos, a velocidade de loading dos cartuchos era idêntica à das disquetes? Estou curioso ;) Nunca tive oportunidade de brincar com um 2068 :)

    Excelente vídeo 😊 A seguir ao meu ZX Spectrum + tive um ZX Spectrum +3 e gostei bastante apesar de ter aquele pequeno problema no som. Por acaso não sabes porque é que os 6 jogos que vieram com a disquete eram todos para 48K?

    • @itsaPIXELthing
      @itsaPIXELthing  6 лет назад

      Talvez para que coubesse o maior número de jogos numa só disquete, para que a oferta parecesse tentadora ;) Por acaso não sei, mas em 1987 eram poucos os jogos com uma versão 128K digna desse nome. Só a partir do ano seguinte (RoboCop, Where Time Stood Still) e, principalmente, 1989 começaram a surgir jogos (Batman The Movie e Chase H.Q.) cujas versões 128K já ocupavam espaço considerável.

      És capaz de ter toda a razão :) Por acaso um amigo meu tinha um ZX Spectrum +2 e a cassete que vinha com o computador trazia a fantástica versão 128K do SuperTest da Ocean e eu ficava com um bocadinho de inveja por a disquete do +3 só trazer a versão 48K e ainda por cima em duas partes. Pelo menos a minha carregava bem mais depressa, hehehe! Grande abraço e espero que continues a fazer excelentes vídeos ;)
