I have just retired and am thinking about moving to Thailand, which is where I am currently visiting, and I want to have a base cost of living of less than $1500. That doesn't mean I plan to live on $1500, I just want to be able to live comfortably on that amount. I do plan on lots of adventures, lots of trips around Asia and Eastern Europe, which are much shorter flights than from Texas. I know I can rent an apartment in the center of town for less than $500/month, that's what I'm paying for my hotel room. I know that food, even eating out has been running me less than $300/month. I'm not exactly sure of gym & trainer, but it should be around $100/month. Medication and supplements will probably run $100/month, maybe more with protein shakes and pre/post workout extras. Taxis should be less than $100/month since I will be walking most of the time. Anyway, my big point is that I plan to be able to live on far less than my retirement income.

Building even more villas will destroy the Bali Vibe in the end, I'm afraid to say you are part of the problem. Foreign people investing in reals estate is really bad for the locals and it is happening everywhere. But you just don't get it.

I first visited a doctor here in Bali for medical health check and certificate, then I had to do a theory test (watching 30 videos narrated in Indonesian language and then answer accordingly). Needed 23 out of 30 questions correct. Then out for driving test which for a motorbike/scooter to my estimation is very challenging. The test for the car is easier though.
Do not tell me you skipped all the above mentioned steps? No wonder Bali roads are the most dangerous in Indonesia.

I assume he meant getting an Indonesian license, based on the fact that he already had a German license.
If so, he wasn't being fair, since he'd already been through the whole process and expense to get the German license.

Too many Chinese buying up and ruining the place?? Thailand was great 20 years ago but its changed now but still cheap to live there. I go every year and lived their for 26 years....GRAB is unreal meals delivered to my condo & I pay a $1 for delivery?

Bali or Vietnam are the better choices. Thailand has TM30 fines, 90-report visits, wasting time , energy and transportation fees, and higher ticket prices of national parks or non-exempt entry fee (eg Temple Arun) targets at foreigners.
