People who find themselves caught up in anomic states -- for instance, soldiers in war or incarcerated inmates -- tend to feel helpless and alienated. They experience a partial or total loss of control. They have been rendered vulnerable, powerless, and defenseless by events and circumstances beyond their influence.
Torture amounts to exerting an absolute and all-pervasive domination of the victim's existence. It is a coping strategy employed by torturers who wish to reassert control over their lives and, thus, to re-establish their mastery and superiority. By subjugating the tortured -- they regain their self-confidence and regulate their sense of self-worth.
Other tormentors channel their negative emotions -- pent up aggression, humiliation, rage, envy, diffuse hatred -- and displace them. The victim becomes a symbol of everything that's wrong in the torturer's life and the situation he finds himself caught in. The act of torture amounts to misplaced and violent venting.

I caught my ex who, I thought, was the kindest smartest and most caring man, beating my beloved dog. After he was exposed he immediatly turned everything around on me and showed absolutely no true sorrow.

Sam, in retrospect, my abuser was already a torturer in childhood, but was made worse in his Fraternity during college, especially with hazing, like you mention. He then pithed all the girl's frogs for them in college anatomy & physiology class and basked in the glow of his superiors at work when he would screw over any competitor or customer. Next he sold overpriced used cars for a living and today he is the director of marketing (lies) for the global company he prostitutes himself and abandoned his family for. He is far more concerned with how to screw over the next person to jealously gain more status or wealth than in being a decent man. With me, the torture was just that. Absolute torment. But he made sure it always happened in private, that it isolated me even more and all the while smear campaigning me behind my back to protect himself in case I should reach out to anyone for help, which sadly worked. Today he is so much worse than he ever was, emboldened by his ostentatious lifestyle and ridiculously extravagant income, he is not grateful for it one but, but instead sees it as his right to expense anything he wants to his company, and to use his personal money and their expense account as his sword with which to chop off more heads by his abuse of power and trust. He's truly headed for the depths of hell. That thought used to genuinely make me very sad, but I have come to look forward to the Justice awaiting for what he has done to so very many unwitting, trusting and helpless people, his own children and even his animals included.
