Michael Rothe There were definitely more moments among the Malfoys in the books than in the movies, especially in the later books. It’s often mentioned that both Lucius and Narcissa spoiled Draco to different degrees, such as Narcissa sending him sweets and the like every day while he was at Hogwarts, and Lucius using his influence and an offer of the latest racing brooms to ensure Draco got a spot on the Slytherin quidditch team. Other noteworthy Malfoy moments from the books included the following: *A)* The book version of the famous Malfoy ferret scene starts off with a classic “Yo Mama” exchange between Ron, Draco, and Harry. First Draco insults Ron’s mother for her weight, to which Harry responds by insulting Draco’s mother (specifically the facial expressions Harry saw Narcissa make at the Quidditch World Cup, which looked like she was smelling dung). The latter insult infuriates Draco who then tries to hex Harry behind his back, but then Moody/Crouch Jr. intervenes, and the rest is history. *B)* At the end of Order of the Phoenix, after Lucius is imprisoned and suffers a massive fall from grace, Draco is absolutely livid at Harry and vows revenge for his father, even attempting to curse Harry until the rest of Dumbledore’s army intervenes and stops Draco. *C)* In Half-Blood Prince, Draco catches Harry spying on him and stuns him, breaking his nose and then saying “That’s from my father” (referring to him blaming Harry for Lucius’ imprisonment) before hiding the paralyzed Harry under the Invisibility Cloak and leaving him to be sent back to London. *D)* Another Malfoy moment from HBP is when Narcissa visits Snape with a less-than-willing Bellatrix along for the ride. By this point, Lucius was locked up in Azkaban and in the crosshairs of a very angry Voldemort, while Draco had just been recruited into the Death Eaters and ordered to kill Dumbledore. Narcissa is a nervous wreck, convinced that Voldemort is deliberately sending Draco on a suicide mission in order to punish Lucius for failing the prophecy mission in the previous book. Not only does Narcissa burst into tears at the prospect of what might happen to Draco and go as far as to have Snape make an Unbreakable Vow to protect him, but she also becomes genuinely angry when Bellatrix blames Lucius’ failure for the whole situation (“Don’t you dare blame my husband!”). *E)* Yet another scene in HBP features a heated exchange at Madam Malkin’s between Draco and the trio. Harry and Ron eventually pull their wands on Draco, at which point Narcissa steps in and threatens that, if they attack Draco, it will be the last thing they ever do. Things get even more heated to the point where Harry effectively challenges Narcissa, even going as far to say she could get a double cell in Azkaban with her “loser of a husband”. This line in particular enrages Draco, while Narcissa coldly responds that Harry will most likely be reunited with Sirius (I.E. killed) before she is reunited with Lucius. Draco and Narcissa storm out not long after that. *F)* In the Deathly Hallows book version of the scene where Voldemort forces Lucius to give up his wand, Lucius doesn’t move an inch at first, until Narcissa signals via a touch on his wrist for him to just give Voldemort the wand. It’s a very subtle moment, but considering how utterly humiliating it is for a wizard to be forced to hand over his wand (that being Voldemort’s intention in the first place), the fact that only Narcissa could successfully convince the notoriously-proud Lucius to do so speaks volumes about their relationship. *G)* During Voldemort’s ceasefire, a distraught Lucius begs Voldemort to let him find Draco (who was still at Hogwarts and therefore in very real danger) and get him to safety. Voldemort not only refuses, but also coldly tells Lucius that it was Draco’s own fault for not running to join him (Voldemort) like the other Slytherins did. Lucius then tries to suggest stopping the battle and just looking for Harry himself, but Voldemort rejects this idea, noting that Lucius’ suggestion was out of a desire to find Draco rather than any practical concern. It’s also heavily implied that this moment, when Voldemort blatantly couldn’t care less about whether Draco lived or died, was what finally destroyed whatever loyalty Lucius had left to the Death Eaters; according to Pottermore, after the war ended, Lucius went on to provide evidence against the surviving Death Eaters and even personally aided in the capture of many of Voldemort’s followers who had gone into hiding. *H)* In Narcissa’s most famous scene in the series, Voldemort sends her to check if Harry is dead after being hit point-blank with a Killing Curse. She discovers that Harry is alive but, instead of ratting him out, secretly asks him if Draco is still alive. When Harry answers yes, Narcissa lies to Voldemort’s face and declares that Harry is dead, knowing that her only chance of finding Draco is to march into Hogwarts as part of the “conquering army”. *I)* And last but not least, Lucius and Narcissa spent the entire second half of the Battle of Hogwarts desperately searching for Draco in all the chaos, neither of them even trying to fight. They eventually found Draco, and the entire family was later seen huddled together in the Great Hall, as if unsure whether or not they should even be there.
