It was never performed live by the band, though portions of it were included in the sound collage tape played before their 1994 concerts. The noise which opens the track caused some confusion among fans in 1994, who were unsure, on playing the album for the first time, whether or not their copy was faulty, as the noise lasts for nearly 1 minute before any music begins. According to an interview with Andy Jackson, recording engineer for the album, this noise is electromagnetic noise from the solar wind. More precisely, this sound is a very low frequency record of dawn chorus and sferics, radio events respectively due to solar wind interference with Earth's magnetosphere, and lightning strikes radio emissions interfering with Ionosphere; this sound is often mistaken for Earth's crust shifting and cracking.
NASA and NORAD on hearing this for the first time were so mortified they went to DEFCON 2!!!!, they thought that a duet between two life forces some where in the vast darkness of the universe unknown to mankind had begun to brainwash the human race with a sound unlike never heard before by their scientists and astronomers , they hadn't been told that PINK FLOYD had released a new album called THE DIVISION BELL featuring music so profoundly like a gig in the sky between a guitar and keyboard it rocked them to their very core refusing to believe no band on earth could produce music similar to sounds and transmission's they constantly received from beyond their unbelievably high tech and advanced radio telescopes.
Used to ride 17 miles to work in the early mornings, (and 17 miles home - but slower, Lol) and my Cassette Walkman would have Division Bell, quite often. Also good long flowing tapes, were Santana "Brothers", which was mostly instrumental, and "Lotus", live from Japan. Also, Physical Graffiti....
Love this video. Awesome. The opening 42 seconds sounds like the universe forming
The sound at the beginning sounds like walking in the snow. Awesome track its so hypnotic
Thank you Pink Floyd for this beauty!!
