*30 years ago, I served as a tour guide on the USS Bowfin. Seems like yesterday. While there, a man with gray hair and a German accent told me that he had served on a U-Boat during the war. We talked for awhile and then he departed. Kind of an eerie encounter.* 🐟🐟🐠🐟
This was the boat my father was assigned during WW 2. He served 22 years in the Navy. He was also on the First Commission of Jimmy Carter’s . He loved the Navy.
My great uncle was a helmsman on the UssBalao the flag ship of that Class I have inherited all his medals and things he saved I am in awe watching all these videos and learning, everything he has done and where he has been
chrisj2004 Cool! Hope they enjoyed it as much as we did! Also I hope you find other videos around my channel just as interesting. Got a USS Missouri tour video and Luau video to from our Hawaii trip! Best trip I ever took hands down! Thanks for watching!
My city has a museum sub from the late 50's. Interesting to see how much changed in that short time compared to now, when we are still making subs in classes that were fist commissioned in the early 00's.
I went here after 9-11 for vacation. I tell you there was not 1 person here and very few visited with no fanfare. Couple old vets were working on it & I talked to them for 20 minutes. They let me go part way up and look in tower which is off limits, pretty cool of them.
Have read the book on this brave ship. You did a good job exploring the boat. Also great camera work. I now have a much better idea of how a new boat would have looked. Nice restoration too. Probably better than new when christened.
Thomas Harmon No I didn’t but keep meaning too. Glad you enjoyed the video. Did best I could in such a cramped space lol. Yeah she was restored so well ! I was very impressed!
Strange,German Uboats were considered the absolute peak of submarine technology during that time, yet this one looks so much more civilized, better kitchen, actual bed bunks, officer room with a table and seats, chow hall, sinks, damn thats some luxury.
U-boats had faster diving time and could go much deeper. Also better torpedoes, and tactics. I agree this one looks like a cruise ship compared to the uboat, but its not about comfort, its about effectiveness.
sneaky snake. Almost none of that’s true and the parts that are true are for different reasons than you think. German U boats had faster diving because they were smaller not because they were advanced. Better tactics? No not really. The US had great submarine tactics and commanders on par with the kriegsmarine, after all they waged the only truly successful submarine campaign ever. I’ll give you the better depth factor though size is also a factor in that. Better torpedoes? Certainly at least until 1944. After that point the US torpedos were at least as good as German ones. Few people know the US developed hydrogen peroxide torpedo’s during WW2 and also had passive acoustic torpedoes like the Germans…
Amazing what the American military and citizens acconplished during ww2 think about all the guns bullets ships subs tanks planes rations everything made for that war .just incredible
LegitGaming117 you might want to go to Fall River Massachusetts, United States to visit Battleship Cove. They have the Lionfish, nother Balao Class sub, and the Massachusetts, South Dakota Class battleship, and a Gearing class destroyer, as well as an East German Corvette
@@garrettwilson4419 Yeah I think it was more or less self guided. You can take as long as ya need but it is cramped and usually there are more people behind you trying to look also, so ya feel a bit pressured to keep moving a bit. Its a nice tour tho.
+John Mansfield Pearl Harbor welcome center (WWII Valor in the Pacific National Monument) You can see this in the background as I am walking around in that video :-)
Have you ever been on a sub? Do you also realize I am 6 foot tall? Now combine the two together and I'd say this video actually turned out quite well. I posted this video for those people who will never get a chance to see this awesome piece of history. You're welcome

Is this the ship that sank the Tsushima Maru? I didn't think it was still there. Wow.
Beautiful well restored, U.S built, World War 2 era, diesel/electric Navy submarine.
Agreed, this is beautifully restored :-)

+Jagthunder1 At minute 11:38 that was a 5"/25 MK40 gun, not a 4"/ 50 MK12 gun
You are correct. I was misinformed, thanks for the correction
Nice tour man, I like these subs, I've seen the cavalla and Batfish museums so far
