She was nicknamed the "Pearl Harbor Avenger." During her first patrol, she sank three Japanese ships, successfully delivered equipment and supplies to the Philippine guerrillas, and also picked up nine Americans. And that was just the beginning of her glorious history. ❓ Did you like the video? As teenagers growing up as Air Force brats in Hawaii, my sister and I were part of the earliest volunteers to help clean and prepare the Bowfin for visitors once she was moved out of West loch to where she now sits. Scraped a lot of rust, rolled a lot of paint and shined a ton of brass. Once opened to the public I spent my high school weekends as a tour guide until I graduated and left the islands for my own Navy adventure in 1983. Beat the heck out of flipping burgers! Met some wonderful Navy vets and educated a lot of visitors on the silent service. Nice to see her doing so well.
@WorldofWarshipsOfficialChannel If Bowfin's video is done so gorgeously, could we have a remake of old videos that performed relatively worse? Say the USS Kidd video, published 9 years ago, a good video at the time, but apparently someone believes the narrator butchered xD the name of the AA guns n we need a more refined version to attract players to explore both old n new ships in the game.
My grandfather was Walter Griffith, the commander of the Bowfin during the night incident when it surfaced in between the Japanese fleet and sunk 3 ships in 24 hours. He was an enlisted man who attended the Naval Academy and retired as a Real Admiral. He suffered at the end of his life from depression and alcoholism until shooting himself in 1966. His crew loved him as one of their own. He used to have nightmares hearing Japanese sailors screaming as they drowned. Everywhere he went he was thanked and honored for his incredible service commanding both the Bowfin and then the Bullhead that ended up disappearing at the end of the war. He would tell people that he felt awful for killing all those people. They have a small plaque of him in the Naval Academy men’s locker room. Unfortunately, military leaders with consciences aren’t thought too highly of after they die. Thanks for this video.
I visited the Bowfin while at Pearl back in '95. Had a cousin who served on the SS Tilefish during WWII so a visit to the submariners memorial was a must.
Just visited Bowfin in Pearl Harbor 2 weeks ago. Sadly my tour did not leave time to do the tour of her, but I have visited several of her sisters (Clagmore in Charleston & Croaker in Buffalo) over the years & plan on returning soon
I remember seeing USS Bowfin for the only time in my life so far, at the end of a cruise around Hawaii back in 2010. For a 12-year-old me, standing in the sweltering heat of Pearl Harbor, it looked like another sister to Buffalo’s dear USS Croaker. Little did I know that 13 years later, I would see this special about its life story. Such a crazy time that war was. And so much has happened since. But through it all, these old Museum vessels are still looking good. . . . . For now.
This is a well-produced video, and I generally enjoyed it. However, in August 1944, Bowfin sank transport Tsushima Maru, which carried civilian evacuees from Okinawa. The sinking killed 775 children. You do your viewers a disservice by avoiding this uncomfortable chapter in Bowfin's story. War is truly horrible; let's not try to sanitize it.
Great job about the "silent service." "Silent Victory" is a great book about US submarine war against Japan in WW2, but it was almost unread. They are still the unheralded branch of service. My salute to those who serve, including St. Charles, if he ever reads this. Wait, 5 ships... Bowfin should have been awarded a Kraken, right?
I have done as is written on page , won a battle in random , and I got 9 green bonuses , and 3100 db , I dunno why I got db , I have theory I won ship from container , but I allready had that ship and got compensation , I dunno .
Les sous-marins US comparés aux U-Boot, sont comme les Sherman face au Tigre, très, très en dessous... Exemple : - Plongé maxi US : 80 m.
Bonne suite . Vive la marine .
Good video. How about a little respect. If you cover a US Ship or Submarine can you please show specifications in Feet and inches as well Meters? All countries that use the metric system should be in Metric all out of respect to the nation or origin.
I know its an old video and I doubt you guys will see, but maybe a double naval legends of Shinano and Archerfish to celebrate the incoming vessels into the game?
@WorldofWarshipsOfficialChannel its understandable. The animation is very good, and as a person taking 3D animation and simulation courses, I can understand that Would be something nice to see in the future, though with the lengthy process of modeling, animating, and script writing and researching, it is fair that it wont happen.
wow WHAT A story. but sadly, there was only one tragedy. one of her kills was the transport Tsushima Maru on Aug. 22, 1944, she was carrying 1,788 passengers Japan civilians some of them were school children, as well as a few parents and school teachers 254 survived.[3] 1,534 passengers and crew died including 780 of the schoolchildren. Just 59 young boys and girls survived.
The messiness of war is regretful. But the failure of civilian leaders on either or both sides is what leads to such a regretful last resort. Everyone pays the price- that is, everyone except the Banks that reap billion dollar profits from the business of war. And regular American taxpayers are the ones who have been left with paying the Trillion Dollar bill after all is blasted and done. This has been going on since World War One. More of today’s Americans, unlike the generations before them, have now to work harder and longer and are not necessarily more prosperous than their parents or grandparents. We all suffer when war happens.
We have a long list of ships and events we would love to cover! We try to do our best to represent them and their museums as reliably as they deserve, but this takes a lot of time and effort! USS Enterprise is on this list, but we can't confirm when or if we will make a video about her.
The german audio is not in line with the video. Due to the ingame stuff at the beginning tthe video has about 80 seconds of delay compared to the audio.
it is the Spanish Gahto but as Americans weve said Gayto both have been used and at this point accepted. This narrator I believe is not a native english speaker and sometimes mispronounces stuff. But thats ok just be aware when you hear this guy on future videos.
@@ronin-l9h Can you imagine having to live and work in it for an entire month, under incandescent lights, living off old food in the fridge & re-breathing the same air as your shipmates, not knowing if you’ll make it back home alive or get 🛢️ death charged 💥and lost at sea in an unknown unreachable unmarked deep dark watery grave? Those were men of steel will, steel balls, and steely nerves! We owe such folks our freedom today, and the ability to speak in American 🇺🇸, and not necessarily in Deutsch or Nihonggo! Modern subs are extremely optimized for silence and stealth unlike the old WW2 ones. The shape of the hull, conning tower and even the propellers are specifically designed to be as silent to sonar as possible. You can only do so much to make a sub stealthy without compromising its integrity to extreme pressures of the deep. And after decades of design experience, modern naval designers got it down to a science. Consequently because of the min-maxing of traits on a modern submarine, they mostly tend to look very similarly albeit a few differences.
