Jamesisms of the day:
* What protects you from lightning in a car is the insulation by rubber wheels. (as Anna states correctly: it's the Faraday cage)
* Plastic plumbing protects you from high voltage entering your house through the water pipes. (at the voltages considered here, normally mineralised water is considered a conductor.)
* Krakatoa caused three years without summer (There was ONE year wthout summer, 1816, and it was triggered by the Tambora eruption; It also inspired William Turner's dramatic skies.)
Also: Kill tallies on fighter planes were not really about intimidation but about bragging rights with your mates.
When I have to choose between two evils, I pick the one I haven't tried before. -Mae West
