Leaf Deformity In Succulents Caused By Calcium Deficiency Part 1

  • Have a couple succulents recently where the new growth is deformed and curled, and I wanted to talk about one of the most common causes of this type of deformity in many different species of plants. Calcium deficiencies aren’t super common for me in my indoor collection, so I wanted to take advantage and show what the growth looks like, and what I will be doing for it. Part 2 discusses how to use egg shells and vinegar to make a more readily available calcium solution.
    You will find part 2 here: • Leaf Deformity In Succ...

    This is so timely. My watermelon peperomia is doing this exact same thing.

    This is probably the most informative video about plants I've seen in months, and I watch a lot of them. Thank you so much.

    I was told by the manager of a plant store here that the watermelon just kinda wrinkles like that naturally. I don't believe her, lol. I didn't know you were supposed to let the watermelon dry out much more than I was letting it. So...if the watering doesn't work I will try the calcium!

    Please don't do this. I tried to fix my peperomia leaves, did this and now I'm trying to bring back my hole peperomia :( this "experiment" is a total plant killer, I will keep using just the egg shell.

      Agreed! The same thing happened to me, it killed two of my peperomias within days :(

    I agree with the previous comment. I have been trying to figure out wtf is up with my variegated peperomias. The leaves are coming in some exactly like you peperomia. Thank you so much for sharing this very important information! :)

    How much Epsom salt? How much water, What's the recipe?

    ill save you 19 minutes of yapping in circles --- plant needs calcium. grind clean dry eggshells in blender or with motar and pestle until fine powder. sprinkle over soil. it will take months anyway. (or go to local garden/home shop or online and get calcium stuff, garden centers especially have specialized plant help)

    Do not try this, followed all the steps and now two of my peperomias are dead. Just buy a fertilizer with calcium instead!

    Will the watermelon unfurl later on when you add on powdered limestone? How about milk? I watered them my extra mill this morning.

    Hi Ashley what I remember from reading items they say yellow leaves could Lao be magnesium deficiency as well. This is an awesome video😊

    • @phileofarm1
      @phileofarm1  6 лет назад

      Yes absolutely! All types of deficiencies can cause various symptoms, and yellowing of the leaves can definitely be a magnesium deficiency! The curling and deformity like I’m showing here is usually calcium, but yellow leaves can definitely be a sign of magnesium deficiency in many plants. In succulents yellow leaves is often a sign of overwatering as well. But if you have leaves unexplainably turning yellow magnesium would be a great thing to try! 💗

    Oh. Wonderful!!! I am so glad I found this video!!
    I got a little watermelon peperomia start about a month ago. All the new growth has come in deformed with super curled leaves, some brown on the edges and tips, splitting, etc. There's even a spoon leaf that was spooned when i recieved it.
    Hopefully this advice will help! I was thinking it could be the direct light from the window or maybe watering issues. Keeping track of these two things hasnt fixed the issue, so I'm crossing my fingers some fertilizer will help.
    It has such striking foliage, I would like to help this plant be as beautiful as possible. Now what about the brown spots on the back of the leaf? Lol

    • @monicakavanaugh8032
      @monicakavanaugh8032 5 лет назад +1

      The brown spots could be the fluoride in the water, try using filtered water to water your plants 🌱

    I'm a new subscriber but I LOVE your videos!
    I'm pretty new to succulents and cactus. I'm growing some from seed and it's going ok, so far... BUT...
    I got, what was labeled as, a prickly pear cactus, from Lowe's a few weeks ago... and it's definitely grown... but the new growth is narrow and weird looking. Any ideas on why that is?

    • @phileofarm1
      @phileofarm1  6 лет назад +2

      It’s probably just not getting enough light. Opuntia varieties need a lot of intense sun for their new growth to stay compact. I’ve seen the craziest growths on various prickly pear types. Some almost look like they are growing green straws on top of their leaves instead of new paddles! It’s wild! Typically people just break the new thin growth off, because once it stretches it can’t go back. And then they typically go under grow lights or outdoors and in a few months the new growth is usually compact again. Hope that helps! Before I had seen how these cacti etiolate I never would have thought they could look like that or grow like that! But they do! It’s crazy, but thankfully it’s usually a pretty easy fix. They can even stretch under grow lights if the lights aren’t intense enough to do the trick. This species are generally major light hogs. 😉
      Anyway hope that helps! Happy growing! 💗

    How do you do the epsom salt in plants? Can I use this in my rubber tree plant? Or even all my house plants?

    • @Elle-fp5uy
      @Elle-fp5uy 2 года назад

      I was thinking that, how much Epsom salt? How much water, how often? I learned all about calsium but nothing about the end result or actual recipe. Seems absolutely necessary in a how to video.

  • @lindasueplantsforyou263
    @lindasueplantsforyou263 5 лет назад

    I'm having same issue. I though it was an unidentified pest problem. I have been using the water/alcohol spray with no luck (although it did work on my variegated peperomia so.....)??? I did use the epsom salt on my very full but pale boston ferns and they greened up right away. I used 2 tbls per two gallons of water. I'm wondering if that would eb the same ratio for the Watermelon Peperomia.
