We spend an average of just 47 seconds on any screen before shifting our attention. It takes 25 minutes to bring our attention back to a task after an interruption. And we interrupt ourselves more than we're interrupted by others. Dr. Mark reveals these and more surprising results from her decades of research into how technology affects our attention.
Dr. Gloria Mark is Chancellor Professor of Informatics at the University of California, Irvine. She received her PhD from Columbia University in psychology. She has been a visiting senior researcher at Microsoft Research since 2012. Dr. Mark’s primary research interest is in understanding the impact of digital media on people’s lives and she is best known for her work in studying people’s multitasking, mood and behavior while using digital media in real world environments.

@7:20 Switching attention for each task is negatively impacted by noise and distractions of 'open office' environments. Many would enjoy hearing that issue addressed. Thank you, Dr Gloria Mark!
@16:04 switching to simpler task of bouncing a ball for example, rather than being 'dragged'. mentally by external 'intrusions' like people, emails, etc.
@18:37 "Why would we internally distract ourselves?" Gloria: *'the Zeigarnik Effect'*
Most needed in our digital age !!!
Candy crush , cleaning kitchen counters are the best take aways
Thankyou for this :)
An amazing talk.
I interrupted myself 5 times watching this video 😅
37:00 I wonder if video editors find it easier to make lots of short scenes with digital editing vs the old film editing.
Can anybody give me the TLDR version?
we can focus for shorter time now than before. If you wanna get better at focusing at one task at a time, stop when you see yourself distracted, and ask yourself why you are distracting yourself, what are you trying to avoid? and is it actually working? a question i wanna ask myself more, is this a good use of my time.
also some distractions are good, in eg. if you're working from home on your computer, take breaks with doing simpler tasks that replenish your "work energy", eg. candy crush or doing the dishes.
Read the book. Insane knowing 45 sec habit formed around the phone stimulation
ahhh man I could really use this video, but 44 mins is a long time for me to pay attention….
LOL
I think the 44 mins are worth it ; listen while doing A chore ; like laundry or house cleaning 🧹 😅!!!
Big fan
The interviewer is so much awestruck that he's simply unable to be a good interviewer.
To me he just seems like he didnt prepare...
Couldn't be bothered to watch past 1:30
Same. I don’t care about what degrees she has lol
Worst interviewer ever. Every time Dr Mark says something, he is like " WOOWW, " " OMG". ¿¿¿
