This is possibly the best American vlog of London I have seen. London is my home and it is always interesting to see it through other's eyes. Also I take it for granted, so it is refreshing. Most other vlogs focus on the major tourist sites, places I rarely ever go to. But this has a different feel, with a smattering of the other London as you live it. Beautifully shot and edited as well.

If you grow up in the UK (or Europe), it is easy to forget how lucky you are with culture history and in particular built heritage.
It only just struck me a few years ago that my town has a basically a twelfth century cathedral.. And that I was baptised in font that was almost a thousand years old. '' How crazy is that'.
It is like suddenly realising the old picture in your hallway is a rembrandt.
Americans go crazy if they have baby clothes that were worn by their grandfather. I was baptised in a font that comes from a time when there were no printed books.
America is a great place - but the heritage here is so overflowing, we hardly notice it.

Pretend you're a tourist, pick a day, and spend a couple of hours on a Thames cruise and a walk through the parks around Buckingham. Show up one morning and take in the Guard change or have your photo taken next to a Queen's guard. Walk across the Tower bridge and back, stroll around Piccadilly Circus and Covent Garden. Stop in at Harrod's, just to say you were there. Take in the city's fantastic museums. Dine in Chinatown. Do a Jack the Ripper walk. Have someone take your photo crossing Abbey Road. By then, you'll have checked off more blocks than most tourists ever could. I lived and worked on the Channel, but spent the weekends in London, so I always had a to-do list on my trips.

London is, without compare, the greatest tourist city on earth. There's something around every corner in the main body of the city itself. I was fortunate enough to be a native, although I left to live elsewhere in the UK as a child but, as much as I've loved travelling the world, and visited many cities that I've hugely enjoyed, I've never found a city that compares to London. However. If you're making your first trip to the UK and wanting a 'British' or 'English' experience, take note. London is a fantastic tourist city with a fantastic history and iconography, but it's also a hugely international city and not truly reflective of a British lifestyle. To experience British culture get out and visit another British city. Personally, my own recommendations would be Liverpool, Edinburgh, Bristol and Belfast as the best four provincial cities in the UK to visit.

mike Ion Tokyo is much cleaner because Japan is almost entirely inhabited by ethnic Japanese. Less than one percent of the population are immigrants. People are invested in their own culture and country. Sadly, cities with large immigrant populations often suffer social problems, crime, littering etc as many immigrants simply don't care about the history and culture of the place they have chosen as their new home. I see it where I live in London- less than 50 percent here are white British, we have masses of low level crime, the flytipping is unbelievable, people are antisocial, drive like lunatics, drink in the street and park all day and night, and it's nearly always the immigrants doing this. It's sad but London has changed massively in the last couple of decades, and not for the better. Fortunately central London is so expensive it hasn't been so badly affected. But many of the suburbs have passed the point of no return I fear- whole high streets have become like third world marketplaces rather than the smart and civilised British high streets they once were.

I lived for several years in each of London, San Francisco, and NYC, and London is by FAR the most beautiful, cleanest, friendliest, and best-functioning of the three. It's also by FAR the most cosmopolitan, culturally rich and has the best functioning public transport, lowest taxes, cheapest rent, and cheapest cost of living of the three. I'm desperate to escape the U.S. and move back!

I feel you would enjoy trips to Bath, Chester and York if you're staying in London for an extended period of time in the future. They can easily be reached by train within two to three hours and you can get decent fares if you book in advance. Many cities in the UK are worth a visit but if you like historical places, these cities would be among the best options.

I wouldn’t slag New York City off, but every video I turn to that speaks highly of London, New Yorkers or some foreigner from France or Italy want to talk it down out of jealousy, for instance:
    1. it rains a lot, no it doesn’t, not as much as New York, what were you expecting Florida weather, both cities rain a lot, but New York City has 20 days more of rain according to records each year
    2. Food, London isn’t fish n’chips, it serves all the great American food/restaurants(philly cheesesteak) plus more, which won’t be found in New York City, ie: GDK/Nando’s, etc
    3. We only have tea and biscuits, infact coffee outsells New York City in London
Too many to list, London is just very cool forward looking city, New York cannot improvise any further, because it’s smaller and densely packed, areas like queens/Bronx/Brooklyn are so built up and are majority private tenanted, they are already deteriorating, just like the airports and mta lol, and they only recently announced contactless facilities in New York City, we had that over ten years

Jonathan Bowen I know the guy that runs New York City transit is british, you are right in someways, but I been reading and noticed many New Yorkers or anti-british Europeans like to slag of London, because it is the best city in Europe and perhaps the world alongside nyc, and I hate that, there’s good and bad everywhere, most of the worlds cities have different things to offer, but New York and London are unique and very similar

What is American food? Cheeseburger? = A sandwich (British invention) with a meat pattie, which is German ('Hamburg'-er). New York bagel? = Jewish. Hot dog? = A sandwich (British) with a sausage (German). Pizza? = Italy. What foods are actually American & not foods brought in from other nations by foreign settlers?

Having grown up in New York City and now living in London for over 16 years, I'd always choose NYC over London anytime. Both cities have their good and bad parts, but for the level of energy and vibrancy, I personally think, New York City wins hands down.

I love London, but I always found the early closing times very strange. I've mentioned it to Brits before but I guess they grew up with it, so it's normal to them, they never even realized that it's considered early compared to some other countries.
    Why such short hours London?
For a city that is extremely busy, lively, and have people partying it up its weird how many high street shops close somewhere between 5pm/7pm most nights, large majority of pubs close somewhere between 11pm/1am, many tourist attractions closing at 5pm/6pm. The Underground Tube closing between Modnight/12:30am (now minus the new all night Friday and Satirday service).
In London it feels like everything is GO-GO-GO hustle because if you dont, everything will be closed soon.

I'm amazed that you managed to make my crappy home town look as good as you did in this video (especially on such a miserable dull and dreary day). The video was beautifully shot, and it has made me see London in a whole new light! It guess it's easy to take familiar surroundings for granted when you see them every day, and so you don't really appreciate what's on your own doorstep until you see it from someone else's perspective.

If you think London is crappy then you are spoiled and wouldn't be happy anywhere, my city has fewer people than the smallest London borough (not including City of London) and doesn't have even a fraction of the things you have right on your doorstep.

Do you remember Edward G Robinson to Steve McQueen in The Cincinatti Kid ? The closing scene (it;s on here ) sums up the difference between the old maestro ) Edward g. AND LONDON and the young talented Steve McQueen and New York.......
After The Maestro; LONDON has won everything he leaves the table surrounded by his cohorts and says to the dispirited Steve : New York......." Now see here you're good kid...but while I'm around you will always be second best...." LOL....you can't beat 2,000 years of history,my friend...:)

I’m English and work near London Bridge. I have always felt quite safe in London and I absolutely love London. My son loves London too but he has worked in New York for the last three years and he now prefers New York. He says it’s more exciting. I’ve been to New York many times and I definitely think London is a lot more beautiful than New York or at least some areas. Also the traffic in New York is far worse than London especially when they’re having a parade (and they seem to have a lot of those!).
It’s a pity the weather was so grey when you were in London. It is so much nicer when the sky is blue but the same can be said of New York, Amsterdam and Paris etc.

Top tip next time you're in London:
the building featured at 8.22 is affectionately known as the Walkie Talkie building and at the top there is a fab viewing platform called Sky Gardens that also has a bar, café and restaurant all in a miniature rain forest setting. It's free to go up there but it's best to book in advance as space is regulated. Amazing views especially at sunset on a sunny (rare) day.

One of HMS Belfast last duties was on D day were she was assigned to fire a broadside at the German positions in france and this was the signal for the rest of the invasion fleet to open fire and the attack to start , unfortunately the ship next to her had a clock 8 seconds faster so she fired first lol
