  • I decided to record this with my new Mitchell MU100CE ukulele. This particular version of the jazz standard "Black Coffee" (not to be confused with the Humble Pie or Black Flagg songs of the same title) was from Julie London, 1960. I first heard it circa 2000 on one of the "Ultra Lounge" CD compilations.
I have the sheet music from one of the Real Books. But as is typical with jazz recordings, this one is transposed to a different key and has some other variants thrown in. According to Wikipedia, Dick Reynolds did the arrangements and conducted the orchestra. I've tried my best to transcribe the chords, from a combination of the Real Book and my ears.
The "7#9" chord, a.k.a. "The Hendrix Chord", is really tense and drives the verses. Sometimes I think it sounds almost too tense at times for this tune (even though lyrically there's a theme of anxiety), so sometimes I just play the dominant 7th.
    Intro and closing:
    A7 F#min7 B7 E7
    Verses:
    A7#9 A#7#9 (repeat, ending on A7#9 D13)
    Chorus:
    D9 | D9 | A7#9 A#7#9 A7#9 F#7 | Bmin7 E7sus4
    Bridge, start:
    A7/G A7/F#, etc. - It descends like this before the vocals. I just play diminished chords down the neck: 6767 5656, 4545 3434, 2323 1212, [ending on A7] 0100
    Bridge, vocals:
    Dm7 G7 | Amin
    Bm7b5 E7b9 | Amaj7
    Cmin F7 | Bbmaj7 Gmin7
    Cmin7 F7 | Bmin7 E7
