I know y'all did this due to copyright restrictions but... I actually really enjoyed this format! Seeing both of you interacting in the studio was real fun. No matter what happens we will always be behind the true top British wrestling channel on the net.
I can't believe that Kendo Nagasaki would copyright strike all of your videos. Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks would be rolling over in their graves if they were a slimmer men.
You guys are so stellar for continuing to do battle with the WWE copyright strikers. You absolute legends. Keep the lulz coming. The Banyabuild computer sent me lmao 😂
I’m pretty certain that the black wrestler in the magazine is Bobo Brazil. Bobo Brazil was an active wrestler in Georgia Championship Wrestling until the early 80s, often feuding with Ivan Koloff. The Dick Murdoch - Ivan Koloff match in the picture was most probably in Georgia Championship Wrestling (possibly Mid Atlantic but 1985 is slightly too early for that) and it’s reasonable to assume Bobo Brazil was working as some sort of manager at this point.
That were a fun one!! I grew up in the 80s, born in 76, so wrestling magazines were a huge part of my connection to wrestling. Pulpy, cheesy and great fun they were.
I'm a 79 model, and was already into wrestling by around 6 years old. I was not allowed to get the wrestling mags at the drug store because too much blood lol.
I remember when WWF magazine was available in the UK, the first one i bought had Demolition on the cover, the old lady at WH Smiths couldn't find the price, she asked her colleague for the price of this "Necro magazine"
The beauty of Apter mags is that it was largely a huge wrestling geek's expansive fanfic about a pro wrestling shared universe and him trying in vain to explain why performers would reappear under different monikers or suddenly go from good to bad and vice versa when moving to another promotion/territory. He was creating the pro wrestling multiverse through his publications and in a way acting as a historian of the staged events that happened within it. A massive undertaking for one single man, driven by his passion for Flair's golden locks and the thought of Flair brushing his then luscious mane.
The American newsstand magazines were as much a part of me becoming a wrestling fan as the matches themselves. Heavily kayfabed, but with results lists revealing, without explanation, that wrestlers were having the exact same matches, with the same finishes, njght after night around the US. And yes, the adverts… I often wondered what the fake muscles advertised (“everyone will think they’re yours!”) actually looked like if you bought them. But there’s no bloody way I want “Apter mag strap on muscles” in my search history.
ROBSCELEBS!! nowhere else will you get such instant nostalgia other than from the wrestleme crew! I'm sure Rob could've helped with the fair usage argument. R.i.p
Off topic, but my favourite wrestling magazine moment was when sarcastic, edgy, take no shit Powerslam Magazine completely sold out and took a free trip to a Russo era WCW show and gave it a big thumbs up and bragged about getting Onion Rings from the Nitro Grill.....good times
I remember paying a fortune for imported PWI as a kid in the early 1990s. My mates thought I was cool because I knew about wrestlers who were coming to the WWF like The Road Warriors.
Wrestle me, I love you on a deep *deep* level that words cannot articulate. That combination of wrestling, nostalgia and new information. You are beautiful *beautiful* men!
My orthodontist was the only person that I knew that had wrestling magazines in the 80's. It used to tick my dad off because he was a high school wrestling coach and thought that pro-wrestling was fake Yes the results were set up ahead of time but they were still wrestling. When he was in high school they did not have a weight limit for wrestling so he got beat by a guy who went to the Olympics and was only defeated once in high school and college. Can't remember his name but he was still famous when I was in high school. I didn't wrestle I did three kids chores in the winter because both of my brothers were in wrestling and basketball. I also did the dishes every night.
Bill Apter talks about it quite a lot in his book "Is Wrestling Fixed? I Didn't Know It Was Broken", which is a really fun, interesting read if you're interested in the pre-Golden Age WWF/WWWF, and the history of wrestling mags.
The old kayfabe grapple mags were such a delight back in the day. Side-note, asking "Have you heard of Charlie Sterling?" was inadvertent comedy gold due?
Taschen did a history of apartment wrestling, but it was just the work of one photographer in the US from the 50s to the 70s. However it’s out of print. As for trademark Sting has the rights to the name Sting in ‘Sports Environment’. This means When the other Sting did the national anthem at a baseball game he had to ask Sting permission to use the name.
When I was 12 I went to the USA (mainly Florida) with my aunt and uncle. Living in Scotland, there was one wrestling magazine - WWF something - and it was basically a glorified poster, with some adverts on the back. In Florida, there was a rack, and entire rack, of wrestling magazine. I was allowed to pick one, and it was a good choice. It had some adverts of it's own, right in the back, for some "women's dominance wrestling" mail order VHSs. Very different from WWF something. It covered all sorts in pro-wrestling, but I later realised that some of the matches and stories were clearly made up. They had a long article about Andre the Giant's long lost younger brother, who had won a "bloodmatch" battle royal with several other well known tough guy wrestlers. The article stated that Andre's brother had been kept in secret captivity, in France, so as not to lessen Andre's impact on the pro-wrestling scene. Years of not wrestling, but weight training, had kept him fresh, young, and in peak condition, like a young Andre. The proof of this was the recent photo of the brother looking young and fit, looking coincidentally very much sort of almost exactly like a photo of a young afro-era Andre. The article stated that the two had formed a tag team, and that it was taking Japan by storm. As an aside, later in that long holiday I persuaded my aunt to take me to a pro-wrestling show. Good, harmless, athletic, theatrical fun. She took me to see the nearest show, which was quite a large affair, though much "grittier" than the WWF. While I had a great time, my aunt got a bit of a shock. This might have been because the main event was Cactus Jack vs Abdullah the Butcher in a three falls, no-holds barred, barbed wire and electric razor match. Abdullah's screams still haunt my nightmares.
Haha, I have quite sordid but fond memories of robs celebs. I would qualify that by saying I was a young teenager at the time. I can vividly hear “my god, it’s full of stars” even now
They are hardcore leftists with the bigotry of low expectations towards black wrestlers...that with the tubby Low T guy not doing research yet being pompous in that his opinion or a rumor he heard is indeed fact. Then the little knob cackling like Jabba the Hutt's monkey gets grating.
I can remember in the 80s, in the us, the magazine racks were full of different branded wrestling mags! They always had those female bodybuilders in thong swimsuits wrestling men in the back pages, so you can order the VHS tape!
I used to subscribe to the Apter mag back in the early to late 90s. It was awesome because I'd get an issue three Tuesdays in row, and PWI weekly would come every Wednesday. Honestly, I wish I still had my collection.
honestly that was really a great show I laughed so much at the end I don't know why some companies just don't embrace people like you and actually work with you not everything in life has to be a fight sometimes the suits should sit down and have a cup of tea p.s I don't even like wrestling but for some reason you two came up in my feed and since then i've watched every single vid you've put out keep up the great work boys
yay wrestle me is back. my fave wrestling mag i read religiously was UK's powerslam. they bit no bones about they liked or disliked in there. immensely funny rag for its time.
I love Pete's accent, I'm not sure what to call it(Middlesbrough?) I know he's from Hartlepool but it sounds similar to the Georgie accent but easier to understand while still retaining all the interesting pronunciations. I did some contract work(office stuff) with a Geordie and although I loved the accent I couldn't understand a good 10-20% of what he said at the best of times, which was exacerbated by the fact that he was batshit crazy. Former British Recon guy turned mercenary, he called himself a military contractor but to me doing military stuff for money is called a merc. He would listen to motivational affirmation audio at a volume so loud we had to shout over it to communicate in the same room like we were at a rock concert. It said things like "YOU are the master of your own destiny! You are motivated ready and capable! You are powerful! You WILL succeed! Nothing stands in your way except doubt! The world is in YOUR hands! Succeed is what you WILL do! Today you are going to make things happen!" but the guy saying it was super aggressive sounding almost like a wrestler doing a promo threatening you with success or else. Meanwhile I'm trying to do all the officey things all businesses need. While all this is happening he will start telling me a story about some funny/stupid thing that happened with one of the trainees(he taught surveillance/security to newer contractors), or rant about one of the useless piece's of shit that proceeded me, all without turning down his audio at all. This would go on for HOURS, then he would freak out days later when we were behind on stuff. It didn't take long to see it was only a matter of time before he would be ranting about how useless I was to my replacement. It was like a cartoon world, there were times were I seriously questioned if it was a prank on me. I have never been so happy to not get a contract extension. Easily the strangest work experience of my life.
In Milton Keynes they have/had a FANTASTIC market stall that sold out of date magazines at like 5 for £2 - i used to love going there as a teenager and had a lot of PWI from the end of WCW times when i loved wrestling as a kid. They were great - written for adults/teens with a LOT of well written and lengthy content rather than all images. Great stuff. Looks like the downmarket ones were all ads 😂 i am guessing its a slightly unfair review though without proper information on the wrestling content included. The mention of a long article does give a clue the content may be similar to PWI. This channel has some fantastic content. Some is generic garbage that every channel covers but i think its a sub, gotta give this a chance as you guys deserve to grow!
Fair use seems to have been eliminated as a whole as we get deeper and deeper into a fascist empire. Loads of channels are suffering of the same thing. TNA do the same thing to MarkyD123 so I'm sure it happens to everyone. 😢 The modern world is a living example of why a fusion of corporate interests and the government in fascism was a terrible idea and explained to us as a terrible idea back in the day, as society would become a dystopia with the government working for the highest corporate bidder in a lobbying hellhole rather than working for the people. Unsurprisingly, the USA implementing corporatist fascism has created the exact dystopian hellhole that we were told it would. But like a true fascist society, we have a widespread belief we are not fascist and propaganda has made a vast majority misunderstand what fascism actually is, with it being thought of a synonym for racism rather than a description of an economic philosophy. Toxic.
Mark Andrews was awesome - if they had given him a good gimmick rather than the name Mandrews then I think he could have been successful. Rather than a stupid name and no gimmick, he should have been a guy who was hit on the head and believed the British Empire still existed and US was a British possession. That would have got crazy heat in America and been LOVED here in the UK, so would have been the PERFECT British gimmick.
I get the copyright sh!t all the time with my Live Streams that look back at the Now albums. Use a 10 second clip from a music video that shows that Cliff Richard may be trying to sacrifice a little girl in the Mistletoe and wine video.......CLAIM. Show Simon Le Bon may not always hit the high notes.....CLAIM. Trying to oust one of our guests as a massive Nick Berry fan with a short clip of "Every loser wins".....CLAIM. It does feel like you are fighting the same battle again and again with the same old people.
In the last several months, I've unintentionally gotten to know Pete. I'm not from the UK, so I don't know his radio work. I discovered this channel and I've recently started listening to the Abroad in Japan Podcast. I did not know Pete was on the AIJ podcast before I started listening. I just keep stumbling across this Englishman on the internet. Where else will he show up?!?
Between spending my adolescence with the slightly questionable adverts in those magazines and watching Gladiators every Saturday I never stood a chance.
You make a great point about there being way too much wrestling. Honestly I think that goes for the entire year. Even if you watch just the stuff WWE puts on TV (Raw, Smackdown, NXT) and their PPVs and stay away from any of their online only content it's a ridiculous amount that's impossible to keep up with. But what is worse is that in terms of actual content their TV shows could easily be condensed into 3 1-hour shows and their PPVs could probably be cut in half and you wouldn't have to lose anything of values. Everything moves so slow and there's so much empty padding. I've been watching Raw and Nitro episodes from the Monday Night Wars (which was before my time, I was born in 2000) and I love how much content they put into much shorter TV shows. That's part of what made it exciting must-see TV!
Watching Lucha Underground and NXT convinced me that one hour is the ideal length for a weekly wrestling show. That makes the long monthly PPVs (or PLEs) that much more special. I really, really hope Raw goes back to 2 hours when it goes to Netflix. A 3 hour show every week is just ridiculous.
While this copyright issue is limiting what content you can post, is there any chance you can get around it by reviewing the UK Revival PPV? This was the one from around twenty years ago, which came about from Tommy Boyde's Talksport radio show with Alex Shane. They blew most of the budget bringing in Eddie Guerrero during his WWE release and Grand master sexay. Ulf Herman drags a guy out of the front row and piledrives him onto the mats. Tommy claimed that the guy wasn't a plant.
I still to this day miss the Powerslam magazines, i absolutely loved them, especially since they had results for the Frontier Wrestling Alliance (my favourite promotion) at a time where the internet wasn't great for such things. I've only ever read a PWI mag once about 2 years back, and i was shocked by it... It had results from like 3 months back. Granted that's probably not the main reason for buying the mag, but it really turned me off from it ;(
Bit confused, I can't find this one on the patreon, only reason I bring it up is because I'd love more of this type of video podcast over on there if it already exists but I'm new to the app and can't really find it
In Germany there still is "Power-Wrestling" but they fell off drastically over the last years. Spelling mistakes, wrong Information, lazy writing. It's really sad.
I avoided those cheaper Wrestling mags like the plague - the Aptermags and WWF magazine were well written and reasonably intelligent. Acceptable. You should have done more about those magazines and less about the Starlig/Neapolitano mags.
Big agree - I would only go to the lower end when there were no Apter mags for sale, but this video was more wanting to show Pete the seamier side of the mags we used to buy as kids, Kurt!
"We will teach you how to break the laws of polite conversation.."
--"Bring a gun!"
Highly underrated interjection from Pete.
I know y'all did this due to copyright restrictions but... I actually really enjoyed this format! Seeing both of you interacting in the studio was real fun. No matter what happens we will always be behind the true top British wrestling channel on the net.
Exactly. With the Banya editing on top, chefs kiss
Watching Marc slowly completing his transformation into Ted DiBiase is strangely majestic.
With just a hint of Chris Rea
I can't believe that Kendo Nagasaki would copyright strike all of your videos. Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks would be rolling over in their graves if they were a slimmer men.

New Wrestle Me video in time for Friday supper is a fine start to THE barren wasteland weekend of the year. Thanks Chaps!
Well said!
Power Slam was my bible from the 90s to it's last publication in 2014.
I still have them all stashed in my loft

Welcome back guys, I’ve missed you and massively appreciate what you do, don’t let the bastards grind you down…
I’m in the U.K. and these wrestlers mags, in the 90’s, turned me into the mark I am today.
same. early nineties. still have hundreds of those American magazines. All my paper round money 😊
yall are the funniest wrestling commentary of all time. you blow the others completely out of the water hahaha

There won't be a funnier video released this year. The random nonsense chatting are my favourite bits of the patreon each week
I've been thinking about subscribing. Is there more video content on the Patreon or is it audio only?
Second hand pornography is the most disturbing phrase I've heard in some time
The WhatCulture dig was hilarious. 😂
Can't wait for the WrestleMeCulture WhatImpact World Championship once Marc has bought 12 turnbuckle pads and been down to B&Q for some rope
@@stalfithrildi5366 It'll be garden hose, it's marginally cheaper!

Second Hand Pornography is the most grim thing I've heard this week. 😂
It doesn't make sense anyway. If it's not worth keeping then it isn't worth watching. Lol
"Apartment Wrestling" seems like something out of a flimsy pulp novel from the 1950s

Holy shit, I was just talking about Rob's Celebs the other day and that quote from 2010: The Year We Make Contact.
Damn Bayna! That PC setup is NICE! Cheers guys, love the channel, love the pod, hope we get to keep both for year(s) to come.
'Help Me' was written backwards as Snow was 'crazy' and wrote it whilst looking in the mirror.
I had totally forgotten this! You're 100% right
When I was 12 I went to the USA (mainly Florida) with my aunt and uncle.
I used to buy them loads when i was younger. My local newsagent used to get them in for me and my mates specially
25:31 Oh so this is why they rebranded back to being called TNA Wrestling.

As a fan of late 80s early 90s wrestling I love this podcast I can’t believe it only has 22k subscribers what’s everyone playing at

Holy fuck $14.99 for those black shirts with gold shimmer on the front saying “Rock n Roll” or “Punk” in 1986 is ONE HELLUVA STEAL 😂
Right that's like fifty bucks now. My parents would have laughed in my face 😂
Between spending my adolescence with the slightly questionable adverts in those magazines and watching Gladiators every Saturday I never stood a chance.
The greatest birthday present I've gotten this year
The Apter mags were the Kayfabe Mark mags, that kept the illusion alive
Keep up the amazing work!! I am going to join the Patreon, there is so much content located there. Can not wait!!
Steam boat Mickey what a great alternate
"Full of Stars" from 2001 A Space Odyssey spoke by Dr Bowman
“Help me” is backwards because Al wrote it on his forehead while looking in the mirror. Because his gimmick was that he’s cah-razy
Great job guys
Happy new year lads
While this copyright issue is limiting what content you can post, is there any chance you can get around it by reviewing the UK Revival PPV? This was the one from around twenty years ago, which came about from Tommy Boyde's Talksport radio show with Alex Shane. They blew most of the budget bringing in Eddie Guerrero during his WWE release and Grand master sexay. Ulf Herman drags a guy out of the front row and piledrives him onto the mats. Tommy claimed that the guy wasn't a plant.
These poor lads have snapped! 😂
Shaw Samuels is underrated
I still to this day miss the Powerslam magazines, i absolutely loved them, especially since they had results for the Frontier Wrestling Alliance (my favourite promotion) at a time where the internet wasn't great for such things. I've only ever read a PWI mag once about 2 years back, and i was shocked by it... It had results from like 3 months back. Granted that's probably not the main reason for buying the mag, but it really turned me off from it ;(
You can find India/Asian apartment wrestling on this very site today if you know where to look...
24:13 what match is this from? Its amazing!
Bit confused, I can't find this one on the patreon, only reason I bring it up is because I'd love more of this type of video podcast over on there if it already exists but I'm new to the app and can't really find it
It arrived late - we didn't think it would be up on RUclips so quickly, due to all the kerfuffle we've had, but it's there now Al
Apartment wrestling ads in PWI were my early porn.
Banyabat's a great editor but they've clearly messed up and accidentally swapped their profile picture with the Sexy Kev one
I watched the ascension of Tyler Black. It was awesome. Seth Rollins? Fuck that guy.
In Germany there still is "Power-Wrestling" but they fell off drastically over the last years. Spelling mistakes, wrong Information, lazy writing. It's really sad.
Literally most internet websites nowadays. I am convinced Ringside News is actually AI produced but has an editor to atleast try and hide it. 😂
I avoided those cheaper Wrestling mags like the plague - the Aptermags and WWF magazine were well written and reasonably intelligent. Acceptable. You should have done more about those magazines and less about the Starlig/Neapolitano mags.
There's a whole svideo to be done about Eddie Ellner.
Big agree - I would only go to the lower end when there were no Apter mags for sale, but this video was more wanting to show Pete the seamier side of the mags we used to buy as kids, Kurt!
Happy new comment guys
You should buy Al Snow’s original voice box. He sounds like he grinds cigarettes in his throat
“Now an anecdote about second hand porn! You’re watching Wrestle Me!”
Powerslam was always my favourite
Definitely my favourite magazine.
Very good piss take of the situation boys. Bravo.👏👏👏👏👏
25 Waltham Gardens, Enfield makes a ruined krushcevka apartment block in Chernobyl look cheery and inviting.
23:10 Jeanie Clark/Lady Blossom has a strong Essex Girl accent. Can't you do that?
Sexy Kev was once my nickname I'll have you know. So get your lawyers ready...................... WhatCulture and Impact
