    When I was in LA, I found a couple of CDs for $1 which I played in the rented car. But as far as records, it's been 20 years and I still have to find that "rare" record among the pile of Jimmy Swaggart albums and other country or christian stuff. I did find a great pair of running tights for $8 though.

      Haha! Yeah, finding good records at a thrift store is like finding a needle in a haystack these days. I think it can happen, but the hobby being what it is today, someone is going to snag them quick. I was just in the right place at the right time on this day!

    You can still find a few. But they have raise their prices and the quality is suspect. You will have to hunt harder. But you can find one or two. You channels came up on my feed. So I came, I saw and I subbed!!!!

    I still find interesting records at Thrift stores, but not the amazing stuff I used to find years ago. That being said, if you're into CDs and/or DVDs, there's still gold in them thrift store hills...

      I have noticed that CDs and DVDs are still very affordable, and there tends to be a much better selection. I’ve been so tempted, but haven’t pulled the trigger yet. That might be next though! Thanks for writing!

    I don't listen to Genisis alot but i did see an Genesis - From Genesis To Revelation album in the Thrift Store 3 weeks ago and i thought why not take it because it was only 1 euro and i had never seen it before. Turns out that that album is really good! "Am I Very Wrong" is an great track. I also found out later that if it has not the face on the cover (the one i got) is pretty rare.
    anyways good finds! Grateful Dead is scarce around here.

    I use thrift stores, garage and estate sales to dollar cost average my record collection down. That was a great score you got!! You have to know your areas thrift stores, and what they do with their records. Some are worth checking on a regular basis and others might put them online (goodwill). There are still some good finds out there but you have to check on consistent basis, it's like treasure hunting.

      @spinzvinyl  9 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, vinyl is certainly trending heavily right now. Makes it very difficult to find the same kind of deals we used to see. This little Goodwill hall, helps to sort of balance things out a little bit.

  • @bosco7837
    @bosco7837 6 месяцев назад +1

    Yeah, I've been burnt out on thrift stores for a while as well. They are too unpredictable. You can get lucky sometimes, and admittedly I got lucky, but when it's five or six lucky events out of a DECADE of thrifting it's simply not worth it to put the effort in it. I mean, petrol costs money, I don't fly to the store (yet). I still visit the thrift store if I'm passing by, but I don't go out of my way anymore. My best finds were probably my current turntable, an Optonica RP 3500 with a terrifying granite cabinet which I got for €150 as "broken" but it turned out being perfectly functional (the store clerk could not operate it!). A few Type 4 Metal cassette tapes and the odd record here and there, but nothing memorable and nothing massively underpriced. I got more success buying good books tbh.

    • @spinzvinyl
      @spinzvinyl  6 месяцев назад

      Nice turntable score! Yeah, my experience is similar to yours. I feel like I got extremely lucky on this day. I used to frequent thrift stores weekly; there was always something worth picking up. But to your point, those days are so few and far between now, it’s hard to justify regular stops.

    You can still find a minor gem here and there, but as for coming away with a bonanza of Rock, those days are largely gone. The longtime collectors and professionals know to befriend those who work in the thrifts in order to “get in the good” whenever records arrive off the trucks. In addition, many employees know vinyl is hot today and many discs never see the sales floor. They either take them for themselves OR they are sent to a special center for EBay sale. Check it out if you don’t believe me. CDs are a much better bet these days.

    • @spinzvinyl
      @spinzvinyl  9 месяцев назад +1

      Oh interesting. Yeah, I’ve seen their eBay stores. They’ve definitely gotten wise to anything remotely valuable.
      You’re right about CDs. Definitely more common and generally a better selection. I might need to snag a CD player soon.

  • @crazyprayingmantis5596
    @crazyprayingmantis5596 9 месяцев назад +2

    My local store sifts through their vinyl and puts anything half decent out the back, they then have a once a year "book fair" where they roll out all the good stuff, the local dealers line up at the door before it opens with their record cases ready, then almost push each other over like the boxing day sales to get to a crate.
    A few days later you can buy whatever they scavaged for in their record stores with a 500% mark up price.
    Its ridiculous and its the reason i don't even bother looking there anymore, all you find is beat up classical music and irish drinking song albums that should be in the garbage 🗑

    • @spinzvinyl
      @spinzvinyl  9 месяцев назад

      That's really interesting. I've always wondered about that. Yeah, it's messed up.
      My local Goodwill never has anything. It's literally a couple hundred Christmas, Jim Neighbors, Barbara Streisand, and Burl Ives records. It's uncanny actually that so much of that stuff exists. To your point, they must filter out anything halfway decent. I didn't know about the annual "book fair" thing.
      It also seems like Goodwill has gotten savvy about posting anything actually worth buying on their Ebay stores. Fortunately, some things can still slip through the cracks, but it's like a needle in a haystack.

    the thrift stores around in my area usually have junk. Or if you find one that is good, 99% of the time the vinyl is gone and just left an empty jacket. I used to do thrift runs and 98% of the time was a complete waste or disappointment. So, I also have stopped. There was mostly garbage most of the time.
