My band toured with Terry on a British University Tour in 1973, I thought him the greatest Brit vocalist I had ever heard, along with other British contenders Stevie Marriot and Steve Winwood Robert Plant, who Terry told a certain James Page to audition as he was to busy to join Led Zepplin... Terry tipped them all, but that wasn't all he was good at. What a party animal Terry was, we all did quite a bit of partying together after the shows, I can tell you David Lindley is a monster party animal and made a great sidekick with TR. One night I think it was Lancaster Uni graduation ball, he and David were so hung over that Terry said to David Lindley have you got any of that California blotter acid left, yeh said David, that will get rid of a hangover! so Alan White, Terry, and David, did that gig tripping, Lee didn't take any but I think he was just getting off, buzzing on the vibes, they played better than night as a band, and Terry's voice was soaring even higher, than any other time I had heard him.. God knows how they got through it but they did. So after all those amazing memories and incredible funky band performances, we get to the present. I met up with Terry, I had seen him maybe around 2016 at Under the Bridge in London, and I was a wee bit disappointed, he was a bit pissed as well, hoping for better things, I went along to one of his shows last year in LA, I saw him again at the Cutting Room in NY, and sad to say, on both performances, he has lost that magical voice, it was painful to witness it.he now does a lot of storytelling in between songs, most of his old songs are almost halved in Tempo, so much so that they are barely recognizable. I still love him as his heart is still very much with the music. but to have a voice like Terry had the energy and delivery have to be almost cat like pouncing on that vocal dynamic. Its a young mans voice, I still feel so honored just to have heard him in his prime, I think the best way to say it is that Terry Reid was once hailed by Aretha Franklin as the greatest male singer she had ever heard. Basically, a young Terry Reid is for Terry Reid now a very tough act to Follow! I love you forever Terry. Ally x
Lee Miles on bass and Soko Richardson on drums... and white boy SuperLungs feels right at home, cause just like Steve Marriott he's able to do blues/soul justice. It's not just the voice - it's in their blood, in the air they breathe; groove like this is impossible to fake.
Damn is that as good as a voice can get or what???Saw terry in NYC in september, this guy still sounds great even at 60+ yrs of age. Hes also quite the funny guy telling some cool stories on stage.I cant emphasize enough how much u should go see this guy next time he comes around your hood. Even my wife who had no idea who he was enjoyed the hell out of the show. Keep on rockin terry. Cant wait for u to come back to the east coast!!!
October 68, nighttime & outside & COLD at Chastain Park in Atlanta. The original band. Just blew me away. They opened for some dufusses named Cream, I think it was. Then, with the line-up shown in this video live at Richard's in Atlanta on a coupla occasions. Wearin' make-up & doped up, but, still great! This is one of my fave tunes, thanx for postin' it.
Ahh, the VOICE in all caps. And to all who said before about Terry being seemingly high on drugs or some such thing - I don't think so. He's just finally happy after breaking free from the Nazi contract with his producer Mickie Most (which prevented Terry from joining LedZep and Deep Purple when they wanted him) Happy 60th to Terry Superlungs Reid, hope to see him live again!
So great, so fun and infectious to watch Terry and the bass phenom. Lee Miles make this funky little tune sound like nothing else is needed... of course w/a voice like that .......
First saw him in Detroit in '69 opening for the Stones. And just saw him last night at a little club north of NYC. Still has his voice, and all of his heart. An incredible show, and a lovely guy. If you have the chance, don't miss seeing one of the great rock voices of all time-- maybe the best...
You rock! Thanks for posting this. Shoeless Terry with his faithful bassist Lee Miles. He looks kind of obnoxiously happy here... I wonder if that's because he finally escaped from the clutches of his producer...
One of the greatest singers ever. Without question. Wish Terry would’ve joined an actual band and created music at a pop culture level so we could have a lot more of his music to marvel at. If only.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure Terry was pretty heavy into drinking and drugs at this time. Excellent performance, but the man couldn't enunciate worth a damn, lol
Just learned about Terry from reading a Led Zep biography. Can't beilieve it took so lond for me to hear about him because he is so AWESOME he should be VERY famous! Wish I had the money to fly to England to see him live this summer.
the main jam is a funk between G and am/C. the end goes back and forth between D and C a couple of times and then a descending progression of bm, am, G. or something like like that. it's a wonderful performance and fun to play along with on the Continental Vox. muchas gracias saludos desde Tokio.
Some people might suggest that Terry was an "Under-achiever". I saw him at Dingwalls 2007: one of the greatest of (many) gigs I've seen in the last 40 years! What could have been!
what happened to the better quality video of this? i swear i used to watch it all the time, but it just... vanished... still a jam to listen to and watch
Been needing to get my fix of this post every once in awhile. The amazing vocals and awesome 'progressive for the time' funk. Best of all, watching Terry and Lee Miles connect to get through the piece. Good stuff.
Ricardo. B. Dogtooth The legendary Lee Miles, Ricardo. Terry stole he and Soko (Richardson-drums) from Ike Turner, was not shot for doing so (Terry Reid is a bad ass.). Lee was still playing off and on with Terry as of the early 2000's. Not sure what he's up to these days. Motherfucker of a bass player.
hey stevereardon1120 ...great point about "just discovering" Terry. Im only 29yrs old and after hearing him on the devils rejects. I went and bought the soundtrack then superlungs then the river then seed of memory ect.ect.ect. Just found the driver on ebay from a dude from sweden. The internet is also finally giving this guy the credit he deserves through album availability, youtube, facebook.. oh yeah and "Drunk or Sober" well i was drunk and i think terry was too....Gotta luv em
there's a big difference between being high and being high on music. This guy MEANT it and so to those normal folk it seems he was high, just because it so far fetched from yours and my run of the mill lifestyles, you may need the drugs, but he don't. god bless ya Terry. Saw you tonight at Ronnie Scotts and you were just fabulous mate
At a time when so many so-called buried treasures are being unearthed by the 'Mojo' generation, I think it's about time Terry Reid had his day. He is one of the best singers of his generation, and certainly one of the best that we produced.
Here's the best I could do, for the lyrics.... : Some have to say it with meaning Some have to say it with words And there's that one they believe in There's something that you only cover Then there's that hell that's both coming Keeping a solid good nation And the best thing that we ever had That's why you got to live a life with love Till it drives you crazy You got to live a life with love Till it drives you mad You got to live a life with love Till it makes things easy You don't understand it You give it the message that you have understand it You give it the message that you have Oh you will come to the meaning Open yourself tonight Some about that old time religion Sit down and see a different things goes by Found in yourself this morning Walking around in the pard Pleading a meaning by the wind Begging me pull on out pain in the dark That's why you got to live a life with love Till it drives you crazy You got to live a life with love Till it drives you mad You got to live a life with love Till it makes things easy Come on let's give it this message that we have All you did find to being This one time you get out in life A good time rocking religion will make you sit down Both times in your life Suddenly it happens in the morning To that feeling of walking in the park Just that feeling I really wanna feel For the time you got to live a life with love Till it drives you crazy You got to live a life with love Till it drives you mad You got to live a life with love Till it makes things easy It's easy when you finally go take somebody's hand .... When you take it fo the first time yeaaahh You got to live a life with alot of love (fade)
brought here by Raconteurs cover of Rich Kid Blues. Reminded that there is a long lineage of great, great singer song writers. Thes dude has some sweet pipes.
Heck! His place should be set if for no other reason that he was Jimmy Page's first choice to be the singer in Led Zeppelin & Ritchie Blackmore's first choice to replace Rod Evans in Deep Purple. Those are two LEGENDARY acts & he passed BOTH of them up. That is an amazing What If?
the booklet of The River CD has commentary for each song. for LIve Life, the only lines from this song quoted are, "Good time rockin religion . . . you got to live a life of love until it drives you crazy . . ." The studio version is close to this live version, except David Lindley is on the studio version. the writer of the liner notes calls this song a "country rocker"(?!). but it is pure funk, Mr. Reid is improvising lyrics to go with the key line of "you got to live a life of love . . ."
true..but none of that compares to the life he chose to live and how he loved living the life he lived..he did it for the music man..im sure he wouldve been honoured to be in the hall of fame..im not even sure if hes still alive lol i just listen to his music..but yea man..he just "lived life"
I was at that show too. So freaking great. Never knew anything about the guy--just went there on a friend's recommendation. Ended up meeting the guy (Google Lodo Grdzak's Intermission) for the pic. As talented as he is, seemed like just as cool. Ten billion stars for that show at BB Kings!!!
Is he alive??? You bet your ass he is saw him in NYC few years ago he's going to be touring the uk this spring go see him if he visits your area you won't be disappointed I promise
Buddha Groove Music Nah Only one person could come near him singing Stay with me Baby was Chris Cornell Otherwise Anyone else FAIL! AND I've been trying for almost 30 yrs since a kid
can Whispering Bob be forgiven for dissing the New York Dolls many years ago? i don't know but he did have some interesting moments. one of my favorites is his interview with Keith Richards in ca. 1974/5 and Mr. Richards is on some chemical cocktail to which i would like to have the recipe. Whispering Bob is fawning over him even though Mr. Richards spends much of his time laughing and looking happy. very good entertainment.
Man, no wonder Jimmy Page teamed up with the Black Crowes in the 90's. He must have heard the Zeppelin that could have been in them. Chris Robinson must have been heavily influenced by Terry's singing.
Addendum: Terry Reid was Jimmy Page's first choice for lead singer when he formed Led Zeppelin. Reid declined and recommended Robert Plant, the rest is rock and roll history. I don't know how Terry got under my radar all these many decades, I just learned of him last week. He recorded an album in 1976, produced by Graham Nash, musicians including David Lindley and Ben Keith, two of my favorite players. I was also a teenage Zeppelin freak during the mid-70's. How did I miss this?
@JoeGeetar i'm sure he knows he's the fucking man. fuck that hollywood bullshit he kept his band goin, wasn't a third as successful as led zeppelin but in my opinion blows them out of the water. he kept it true to the music and that's why it's all so good.
they are basically ad-libbed and wouldn't be the same for any two performances. i have a CD re-issue of the album 'River' that has the studio version of this song. the CD came with a 24 page booklet of information that is useless in regard to the music and lyrics on the album. here is what the little booklet has to say about this song: '"LIve LIfe" is another careening country rocker that swerves and shudders like a pickup truck full of drunken cowhands on a Friday night. The beat here driven along by fierce conga playing and wicked fat bass pumping, "Good time rockin' religion . . . you've got to live your life of love until it drives you crazy . . . "' Keith Duncan, 2002 revised and edited by: Patrick Roques - Reissure art direction and design i guess both of them are guilty, but It's no wonder that Mr. Reid didn't become better known in the 1970s if he had promoters like that. on the studio version of the song, 'LIve Life,' Lee Miles plays bass and Conrad Isidore plays drums. They are the same two guys who are in this video with Terry Reid who sings and plays guitar. and yes, the studio version sounds nearly identical to the version in this video. the only difference is that David Lindley plays a few steel guitar fills and slide guitar on the studio version. i guess the 2 bars of steel guitar solo in the studio version of the song threw off the two guys who wrote and edited the liner notes on the CD re-issue. but who buys an album for the album notes and its artwork? (nah, don't answer, i already know and it's depressing). it's a really great album. i didn't know about it until i saw songs from it on youtube 3 or 4 years ago. i used to listen to his eponymous debut album from 1969 and Seed of Memory from 1976, but i'd never seen this one until. my girlfriend got it for me as i was listening to Terry Reid youtube videos constantly for a month or two a while back. the material on River covers from 1971 to 1973 which was a very creative time for him. the useless 24 pg. booklet that comes with the CD re-issue of the album does nothing to detract from the excellence of the music on the album. but i don't know where to find the lyrics. however, i do know that the song, 'Live Life,' on that album and in this video has about as much connection to country rock as Kraftwerk or Vladimir Horowitz did. muchas gracias y saludos desde Tokio.
one year later... and I come to find this very specific answer... yes... Terry Reid is not the average singer... I'm glad you took your time to answer my question... And I hope you still enjoy this great artist... hard not to
I have the songs at 320 kps but I can't understand almost anything he says on this album...even if the lyrics are surreal like people say, I think I would like the songs more if I could decipher the sounds of the words
IDK. Terry's eyes have always been kind of like that. Giant and deeply seated (sunken) and with big domed eyelids - see his 15 y.old photos. Some make up help that look as well. Doubt he's done "hard" drugs. Then again, he had buddies like Keith Richards and Jimmy Page, so... you never know.
What a stellar rhythm section too - totally in the flow - in his socks. Best thing I have seen in years.
Lee Miles on bass and Soko Richardson on drums... and white boy SuperLungs feels right at home, cause just like Steve Marriott he's able to do blues/soul justice. It's not just the voice - it's in their blood, in the air they breathe; groove like this is impossible to fake.
@Greg Hubbard What's wrong with Steve Marriott exactly? I like Steve and Terry both, seems weird you have to choose between one or another
So in the pocket. Brought down the house at Richards the swankiest rock club in Hot ‘Lanta in the early ‘70’s
This guy is brilliant and the "Seed of Memory" album is simply on of the best albums of the hole 70's. Long live Terry!
I think this song is from 73`Album " River"
Terry Reid is one of rock and rolls greatest unsung heroes.
The day after I watched this on OGWT I bought the album "River". Terry Reid is a
phenomenal talent. The most free & involved singer Iv'eever heard!
cool i have all except that even doubles
Terry is a great musician and an even better human being. He is a true blue son-of-a-bitch and I am proud to call him my friend..
True Genius of the 70's era....
Damn is that as good as a voice can get or what???Saw terry in NYC in september, this guy still sounds great even at 60+ yrs of age. Soo good! Thanks for posting! Right up there with Marriott, Rodgers, Cocker and Patto.

Happy 60th to Terry Superlungs Reid, hope to see him live again!
Not sure where you heard your stories but from people who know him : he turned down the led zep and purple gigs. It wasnt a managerial issue.
In 1973 this was rock and roll....
So great, so fun and infectious to watch Terry and the bass phenom. Lee Miles make this funky little tune sound like nothing else is needed... of course w/a voice like that .......
I forgot how much i loved this video. The way they are all interacting....his vocals.... the groove generally. Awesome
First saw him in Detroit in '69 opening for the Stones. And just saw him last night at a little club north of NYC. Still has his voice, and all of his heart. An incredible show, and a lovely guy. If you have the chance, don't miss seeing one of the great rock voices of all time-- maybe the best...
This man should have been more famous. Sick rhythm guitarist and amazing vocalist. Hell of a fucking backing band too.
Terry...Lee Myles and Soko Richardson...awesome trio!
If only.
bothers me that I cant understand a damn word Terry sings...but it's so funky I keep coming back.
i was just thinking the same. really got to listen closely. yea great funky sound , luv it
Yeah, I'm pretty sure Terry was pretty heavy into drinking and drugs at this time. Excellent performance, but the man couldn't enunciate worth a damn, lol
Perhaps it would help if he sang in English.
terry long live you and your music
it keeps me from all my demons
and brings me closer to my angels

Woah....Great voice and Gorgeous too!! -- How could this fine boy EVER go wrong?
Truly fantastic. WISH I could have witnessed something so heavy.
The Chris Robinson voice is hard to deny respect to both
Great feel and flowin expression.
Terry's funky funky strat!
Actually, just fucking hell! Glorious funking, rock and blues, jamming heaven!
Probably got copyrighted. Happens alot on here. They took off pearl jams Black performance that they posted on their own account.
It's back up on YT!!!
This is Terry at his most funkiest. Lee Miles(Motown ace and Ike and Tina Turner's bassist) on bass is driving Terry to new musical heights.
The bass and drums here syncopate like there's no tomorrow, it's sublime.
River is his finest hour! Its an extraordinary album!
+Andy Thomas yes, it is. my girlfriend got me a copy and it blew me away. muchas gracias y saludos desde Tokio.
Its a great Sunday Morning album!
I love it. My personal favorite of his is Seed Of Memory. That album saved my life.
Been needing to get my fix of this post every once in awhile. The amazing vocals and awesome 'progressive for the time' funk. Best of all, watching Terry and Lee Miles connect to get through the piece. Good stuff.
yes, indeed. ' . . . and that's what it's all about.' muchas gracias y saludos desde Tokio.
yea
the guy rocks
love this bass player
Ricardo.
Motherfucker of a bass player.
brilliant!!
Wow, this seriously deserves a place on one the OGWT DVD's!!
One helluva rhythm section!
Amazing
This an example of how awesome he sounds with a backing band.
what an awesome voice. and that dude at the end had very british teeth. yeesh.
hey stevereardon1120 ...great point about "just discovering" Terry.

0:01 if I'm not wrong, that's Bob Harris introducing, Old Grey Whistle Test, on the BBC, back when ...
there's a big difference between being high and being high on music. This guy MEANT it and so to those normal folk it seems he was high, just because it so far fetched from yours and my run of the mill lifestyles, you may need the drugs, but he don't. god bless ya Terry. Saw you tonight at Ronnie Scotts and you were just fabulous mate
He was very good looking...
Indeed he was 😮 😍😋 💋
Seeing Terry at the Komedia in Brighton on May 17th. Get your arses to a gig people!
Fuck Yeah! My fave TR tune, so glad U posted.
The bassist is dope...
At a time when so many so-called buried treasures are being unearthed by the 'Mojo' generation, I think it's about time Terry Reid had his day. He is one of the best singers of his generation, and certainly one of the best that we produced.
"That's what it's all about": three musicians playing with each other, in tune with each other and the music. No ego, just the moment and the music.
Man sing those Blues Man
Danke. Five Stars.
This bass line is solid.
Here's the best I could do, for the lyrics.... :
Some have to say it with meaning
Some have to say it with words
And there's that one they believe in
There's something that you only cover
Then there's that hell that's both coming
Keeping a solid good nation
And the best thing that we ever had
That's why you got to live a life with love
Till it drives you crazy
You got to live a life with love
Till it drives you mad
You got to live a life with love
Till it makes things easy
You don't understand it
You give it the message that you have understand it
You give it the message that you have
Oh you will come to the meaning
Open yourself tonight
Some about that old time religion
Sit down and see a different things goes by
Found in yourself this morning
Walking around in the pard
Pleading a meaning by the wind
Begging me pull on out pain in the dark
That's why you got to live a life with love
Till it drives you crazy
You got to live a life with love
Till it drives you mad
You got to live a life with love
Till it makes things easy
Come on let's give it this message that we have
All you did find to being
This one time you get out in life
A good time rocking religion will make you sit down
Both times in your life
Suddenly it happens in the morning
To that feeling of walking in the park
Just that feeling I really wanna feel
For the time you got to live a life with love
Till it drives you crazy
You got to live a life with love
Till it drives you mad
You got to live a life with love
Till it makes things easy
It's easy when you finally go take somebody's hand
....
When you take it fo the first time yeaaahh
You got to live a life with alot of love

Dig it !!
If you can find someone with the original album, the lyrics were on the inner sleeve
Sounds like Rod Stewart, his voice is great, Robert Plant used his voice ideia, who knows. He can sing any music.
This is fantastic... Just wondering who this bass player is. That's some gutteral funk. Sounds awesome.
Lee Miles.
Makes me think of Shannon Hoon.
James Ni You nailed it! I couldn't figured who he sounded like...a little Marriot, a little Stewart. But Hoon is a ringer for Mr.Reid.
James Ni Also Chris Robinson sounds a little like TR.
I think is the quote is from Denise Sullivan - not Chris Robinson.
Oh and BTW the two vids from Groupies have been removed and we want them back... pretty please with terry on top?
So close but he missed the big star ship. Too bad, he was such a talent.
Sakajawea on drums

what are the lyrics I love this song
I wonder how Zeppelin would have sounded like if he accepted the job offer.

Can't find the lyrics for this song!
they are basically ad-libbed and wouldn't be the same for any two performances. i have a CD re-issue of the album 'River' that has the studio version of this song. the CD came with a 24 page booklet of information that is useless in regard to the music and lyrics on the album. here is what the little booklet has to say about this song:
'"LIve LIfe" is another careening country rocker that swerves and shudders like a pickup truck full of drunken cowhands on a Friday night. The beat here driven along by fierce conga playing and wicked fat bass pumping, "Good time rockin' religion . . . you've got to live your life of love until it drives you crazy . . . "'

i guess both of them are guilty, but It's no wonder that Mr.
Billy Zé Wow ... muchas gracias Billy ...
+Family Marx Billy sends his best.
one year later... and I come to find this very specific answer... yes... Terry Reid is not the average singer... I'm glad you took your time to answer my question... And I hope you still enjoy this great artist... hard not to
Parecidíssimo com Steve Marriot
I have the songs at 320 kps but I can't understand almost anything he says on this album...even if the lyrics are surreal like people say, I think I would like the songs more if I could decipher the sounds of the words
@maxsayheyday If Terry had gotten into Led Zepp, Led Zepp would not have been what it is now. And this great song would not exist either.
Who is the drummer of this band? Saw him playing on the Apple + doc 1971 and need to find out who this guy is. Great drummer.
That's Soko Richardson. Like bassist Lee Miles, Soko spent time working with Ike Turner. Wikipedia has some good info on him.
IDK. Terry's eyes have always been kind of like that. Giant and deeply seated (sunken) and with big domed eyelids - see his 15 y.old photos. Some make up help that look as well. Doubt he's done "hard" drugs. Then again, he had buddies like Keith Richards and Jimmy Page, so... you never know.
awesome vocals !
Rats I meant "cherry" - can you fix or delete my comment? I was half asleep didn't notice wtf I was typin :(
Heroin? How so?
Terry is awesome.
