We absolutely loved the 200g summer in blind tasting last Sunday. Enough to want to try others with the intention to offering them for bottle sharing to spread the price burden :-)
A sample of Daftmill 2006 Winter Release was given to me by Roy of Aqvavitae when I visited Scotland in March of 2019... I liked it a lot, and wished I had a full bottle.
I live 15 mins drive from Daftmill and the owner Francis was conscious enough that virtually nobody in the local area could get their hands on a bottle so he donated a bottle or two to the local bottle shop to sell off in 3cl samples. There was a line around the block on what was probably the wettest day of the year. I just kept driving....
I saw a couple bottles were given to local pubs for sale by the pour, but because of Covid shutdowns they went into auction and the proceeds went to the pubs. We talk about it in an upcoming episode of the Whisky Rant (should be out Monday). Cheers :)
Not sure why a grown up decides to line up for a bottle of whisky, no matter how good the hype is. Jeremy’s a respected voice now and have to say its not great to see this review
Thanks for doing this, Jeremy. Appreciate the insight. I've contemplated buying a Daftmill online here in the states for about $230 as well. Another hyped distillery out of England is Bimber that are beginning to fetch quite a bit of coin for some for their younger bottlings. Have you tried any of there releases as of yet? Cheers.
Great review Jeremy! I often wondered, since you review a lot of secondary bottles of Whisk(e)y that you purchased or won on social media lottery, what percentage of them lived up to the price paid, not including lottery wins?
Most of them are lottery wins. I rarely buy something full secondary. But overall I think I've taken off marks for value every single time. I'd say Booker's Rye is maybe the only bottle worth it's secondary value at the time I got it ($700). Its now $2,000 lol.
I’m lucky enough to have a bottle of the 2009 Oloroso U.K. Exclusive 61.1%. Looking forward to cracking it. I’ve heard it’s the best of the recent bunch. Only paid £160 retail (non ballot). Wouldn’t pay secondary. £500-£700.
would love to try some of these but at those prices I think I'll be looking out for other expressions. Wonder if Daftmill would consider increasing their output so that more people can taste their whisky?
Being a farm-to-bottle distillery, Daftmill's output is limited by the amount of barley they can grow and harvest. Unless they magically acquire a significant amount of additional farmland, we're not going to see an increase in output anytime soon.
the difficulty with Daftmill is that it's $60-$70 whisky at best at 4 times that price but Akkeshi makes Daftmill seem cheap in price. Too many over priced malts now coming on the market that are $50 to $70 level taste but hundreds in cost. It has gotten ridiculous
Recently secured a bottle of the 2006 Summer with a buddy, but have yet to pick it up. Looking forward to the experience. Thanks for a good review.
Nice, enjoy!
I just bought the summer 2006 today

Nice! Yeah, unfortunately I don't think they will ever hit the Canadian market.

Nice review! Few questions though. What are unique things about them ?? And are they non-chill filtered and no coloring? Thanks

Hey Michael I have an open Daftmill 2006 Summer Batch (1680 bottles) 46% in CA (not tasted yet) if you want a try before you buy let me know.
I have not tried Bimber yet. Would love to. Cheers

Nope....out of my price range!
Thanks for the insight into price/value, now I know not to chase it.
I like the shirt btw!
Cheers Sascha

Loved the sherry cask, jealous of your bottle! Cheers
I'm really jealous as well. Would you consider a trade? haha doesn't hurt to ask
Great review!

Unlikely as they are busy working their farm most of the year, which presumably is their main source of income.
Interesting! ...daftmill is the new springbank?
It could be
The Summer/Winter 46% releases are generally $250-350 USD now. Definitely paying for the hype. Would love to see how it does in a blind tasting. 🤔
It would be interesting to setup a blind with hyped whiskies

I agree, prices for Daftmill account for factors other than the whisky's quality.
I'm definitely intrigued with your review and ralfy mentioning it today in his whiskey of the year video. Will keep a look out for them.
The bottle Ralfy is auctioning should get over £2,000
