Thank you for visiting Poulton it used to be my shopping town it's a lovely place i see quite a bit has changed though...the church is lovely and the Crocus in Spring are a sight to behold , i would often drive through Poulton at night on my way home from Thornton, there is so much to like about Poulton, last time i was in the Fylde i had a delicious coffee at Costa.
Thanks for sharing this very fascinating town with us- lovely shops and what a treat to see the town's square curiousities. I couldn't resist looking up to see what that slab/ table was used for; apparently, it was known as a ' fish stone,' where the fishmonger displayed his fish-I was relieved to read, as I'd imagined it was used for human torture. The stocks have been repaired over the years- due to cars crashing into them and I don't know if the two side supports are the original supporting stones. It was interesting to read about the town's whipping post. All three curiousities have been dated back to the 1700's.
Thank you Jane for this tour of Poulton shops, I may have got it confused with Thornton, I'm sure you can put me straight on this one, coming by bus from Blackpool and got off near the church, walked a little way and there was an alleyway, well along there was a butchers shop which sold really nice cooked chicken, not visited for a few years so will have a look over probably in the New Year, it's lovley.
What a lovely video to start my day with! I shall definitely have to visit this fascinating town with such a panoply of architectural styles. I hope the proposed rail link between this town and Fleetwood comes to fruition. I did not see a bookshop in the film but I would be surprised if there wasn't one. I have heard before now about the eliptical 'watching eye' over the church door and abou the market cross but I would like to see them in person. I could almost smell the pork pies and I think I may have to have a cooked breakfast today! The field of crocus blooms sounds very attractive. It reminds me of the parish church in Settle where my eldest son and myself say the churchyard absolutely covered with snowdrops, it seemed as if it had actually snowed except the flat tombstones were bare. A wondrous sight. Definitely on my list of places to visit next year after the all important vaccinations. Many thanks for this lovely tour Jane!
@@JohnHughes2002 That is sad news John, so many have gone 'online' or the owner has retired or simply cannot match income with rent. Sadly many people will pay £6 for a glossy magazine full of adverts whereas they think books from a proper bookshop should be priced on a par with charity shops. I shall still visit Poulton and I may sample a pork pie :) Thank you for the information.
This is the video I've been waiting for! I know Poulton very well indeed, but I now live near Southampton. It was May when I was last there visiting my elderly mother. The stone slab is a fish slab and the pirate "skull & crossbones" is outside the small door at the back of the church. It isn't of course, but it makes a good story. Every town should have a Pork Shop. Highly recommended!
Mayors Pork shop used to be in a similar position to the current shop which had a very long history with an old ham which hung in the window and an old wooden butchers bench which had a large sunken area in the middle that had been worn down with decades of use
Love the Pork shop, best pork pies and vanilla slices. Booths apparently sell parched peas and as a Preston lass originally I’ve been hankering after them for years. Now I know where Booths is I’m gonna be getting some x
Nice video - you should have popped in for a brew at 10 at my place, which featured on your video, near China Red. The pirate tombstone is located near the vestry and you're supposed to spit in the pirate's eyes then spin around or some such. What's supposed to happen I forget. You should feature Poulton park next time. Perhaps you could also feature more videos of Thornton village centre and St Anne's square?
@@visitfyldecoast on the subject of Poulton church yard, there are also supposed to be secret underground tunnels that lead to Skippool Creek and were allegedly used for smuggling purposes.
I used to visit poulton many many times in the 70s.. l lived in st.annes and it's not far from poulton. Glad to see poulton has changed greatly with new shopping mall in the town centre..The church is still around..
ah thanks for that, i lived in Poulton and family still do.Am now in Canada and due to covid have not visited last couple of years. Quite a few of the shops have changed since i was last over
From local FB pages I understand there were proposals for the police station to be a cafe type place with tables and chairs out front, but also the yard at the back to have small pop up stalls selling all manner of things You should be able to get more info from online planning records
The pirates grave is a myth Yes there is a stone by the vestry door with skull and crossbones but as I understand it, the design was decorative in the style of the times when doom and foreboding lay in wait for you if you didn’t lead a good life - all flesh is mortal Poulton has an excellent historical society with lots of old photos showing the town with boarding houses round the church etc And the dilapidated Tithebarn which was shamefully demolished in the 70s along with a row of tiny cottages with very low doors opposite the Bull So much history round every corner There used to be a Co op grocery store where Co op chemist is now and it still had - in 1960s one of those pneumatic tube systems for money and when you bought butter it was cut from a huge slab and shaped by wooden paddles - ah the memories !

Great - thanks for doing Poulton - but don’t wait until the summer you have to go back when the crocuses are in bloom over the next 2-3 weeks !
That's the plan! Just need a spot of sunshine and the right time for the flowers x
Thanks for the video. I really enjoyed the brew at 2 video yesterday. Can't wait for another one.

There used to be a bookshop in Poulton many years ago called Archway but I think it became Victoria Wine and then the Pork Shop.

Poulton has an excellent historical society with lots of old photos showing the town with boarding houses round the church etc And the dilapidated Tithebarn which was shamefully demolished in the 70s along with a row of tiny cottages with very low doors opposite the Bull
So much history round every corner

That's a couple of good points there Lynne. Noted!
Blimey. I grew up there. We used to buy our concert tickets from the record shop which is now llyods chemist.
I can show you how to find the pirates grave in the churchyard Jane ! Drop me a message at the uni !
Will do!
