How long do you usually hold on to your computer before you buy a new one? I used to get a new computer every 2 years, but something about this computer made me stick with it for 7. *Also!* Make sure you're subscribed so you don't miss next week's video where I collab with The 8-Bit Guy and others! It's gonna be awesome! P.S. captions are now available for this video!

My mom held onto her Early 2011 15" MBP until earlier this year when the GPU failure thing happened. Now she has a 2019 retina 4K iMac. Then I discovered the dosdude1 GPU patcher, and it still works fine. I downgraded it to Mavericks for the old design. My main OS is Ubuntu MATE :)

I hold on to my computers for about 3-4 years because I notice that after that amount of time my PC typically stops working well. After seeing that you're still able to use your 7 year old Mac, I might consider switching to mac when the time comes to switch my computer.

    2011 MBP 15” here.
Chugging along nicely in 2020, with its Sandy Bridge quad i7 2.6Ghz, hardware disabled AMD graphics, and no issues running Catalina.
Forget about doing any modern video editing, but it handles its purpose of running Logic X and Serato DJ just fine.
Not bad for a $150 EBay buy!

You got it, DosDude patcher FTW.
Runs great, practically everything works with the exception of Continuity/Handoff due to the outdated Bluetooth 2.0 that was used in that vintage of MBP.
Meanwhile, I can’t even get Big Sur to boot with Clover for my Hackintoshes (yet), so I have some doubts that Collin will get 11.0 running on older machines...
Unfortunately, it seems like the progression to Big Sur will likely be the end of the road for most hacks - at least for now.

It’s a known failure point on this series of MacBooks. The AMD chip eventually fails, causing all kinds of random problems, from graphical glitches to kernel panics and reboots.
It became so predominant, that Apple would eventually issue a repair program on the series.

I'm now using a 2018 MBP, and the keyboard really does deserves all the hate it received, double strokes, horrible feel, and sometimes not registering at all, no esc key and the Touch Bar is a gimmick for sure. The only thing that I really like is the trackpad is amazing, and the screen is gorgeous. I has also decent speakers, and performance has been great, I haven't experienced thermal problems as ppl were saying, and I've been able to even game on it via external drive bootcamp.

I did try Resolve in like 2018, but I was not able to fully use it due to the free version's limitations. But I was simply not an adult yet. I did end up cracking Premiere Pro in 2019 (which I fully regret now). But then again, I didn't have many other options as I was too young to afford expensive software.
I did stall out of video editing for much of 2020 and 2021 due to issues with Premiere Pro's media offline issue.
Finally, when I got old enough, and started working, I was able to get stuff I could never have gotten in much of my early teen years.
In June 2022, when I had enough money, I bought Final Cut Pro.

As someone who just purchased my first 2019 MBP to replace a 2011 iMac, I can say from experience calling the cooling system in adequate is in understatement. I needed to buy an app to allow me to disable turbo boost when I don’t need the extra power. It allows me to see the CPU temp and the fan speed as a nice help tool. On my really heavy workload days I have a fan pointed at it in my office just to help out the cooling. The second monitor can really get it cooking. I love the machine, but I feel protecting the internals is more important than looking pretty.

I've held on to my Early 2015 13" Macbook Pro since September 2015. I've encountered practically zero issues for the 5 years that I've owned it. These things are super well built! I think I'll keep using this right until Apple stops supporting Intel based Macs.

Ik I'm kinda late but I've been looking at some refurbed Early 2015 MBPs and I'm wondering If it's still worth it to get one at the moment. I don't do too much outside of browse, play a text based browser game, and remote into a friend's PC for emulation MP purposes. This is my first real attempt to get an apple device, should I get one?

    • @KaranDeshmukh
      @KaranDeshmukh 2 года назад +1

@@malignantjewmor8436 Well, it's definitely still worth it but there is one caveat that needs to be addressed; Apple has dropped support for 2015 Retina Macs (as far as, macOS Ventura is concerned), which means that you'll keep getting patches, as long as macOS Monterey is alive but I suspect that as soon as Ventura arrives, Apple's going to flip the switch.
But given your use-case, I wouldn't worry about that, too much. These 2015 Retinas are amazing workhorses. You can easily ride this one out for a couple of years (that's what I am planning on doing and my work flow is pretty much the same as yours).
So, the bottom line is: if you're not too concerned about having a Mac that's bleeding-edge AND you find a good deal, just snag it!
      Hope that helped. :-)
PS: I'd highly advise you to go for a non-GPU variant and one with **at-least** 16GB of RAM (this is crucial because the RAM is soldered to the Logic Board and hence, is not user-upgradable).

Bro, we bought a mid-range VAIO laptop back in 2012 and it's still going strong (with a couple upgrades of course). That thing has been through hell and back with me. It was the center of my workstation from 2015-17, and that little i5 rendered countless videos in those two years alone. It has been my field machine up until a couple days ago. It didn't die, I just got a new laptop. We now use the thing as a media center PC in our living room. Maybe it can reach its 10th bday, who knows. We have a couple laptops that are over 20yo, as well. It's surreal how long laptops survive when you take proper care of them.
Our perspective on the life of laptops can be skewed by most modern tech reviewers, but I appreciate the fact that you aren't afraid to show us that you can use a laptop that's more than a couple years old. Fingers crossed for my new Zephyrus to be at least half as resilient as my vaio and your mac!
Sorry for long comment lol, if anyone read until here, have this *hands cookie*

I used my 2013 15 inch macbook pro for almost 7 years (it died this January). I had the thermal paste replaced and dust cleaned in 2017 and i always pushed the fans to the mac while exporting video (and while editing it). The cpu VRM´s are completely burned and the cpu is also dead since the vrms killed it (Rossman diagnostic). I sold it for parts on ebay and got he new i9 base model macbook pro. The 2013 mac was used soo much and had travelled with me all around the world. It rendered 4k 60 raw videos with crazy color edits and effects on the desert heat and never let me down. That computer has a special place in my art as a photographer and filmmaker.

I usually hold onto my computers for 5-10 years. I built my family desktop in 2017 and that is running fine. My main machine is a mid-2012 MacBook Pro that I use daily, and I bounce back and forth based on what I want to play around with between a PowerMac G3, a Mac Pro 1,1, and a T42 ThinkPad. Vintage computers are so much fun.

Late '11 trucking along, handling LPX with 5 hour 5 track sessions with no issues. Battery was replaced when I picked it up (and broken camera wire) and some cosmetic issues on some keys, but aside from a clogged fan (cleared) no issues. Upgraded ram to 16gb and replaced HDD with SSD, super happy. Two hard drive cables and a spare fan on hand after the kernel issues related to the clogged fan but still super happy.

Yea I have a 2015 MBP 15" and I have to say that I got in right before they started goofing them up. I recently bought a new 2020 16" MBP and I'm not thrilled that it's missing some ports but the good thing is they've changed the keyboard back and the CPU and GPU are way better. I still love my old 2015 MBP and I keep trying to find uses for it. Haha. I keep it around as a backup and have it hooked up to my TV just in case I want to transfer a large video to watch, but I admit that this is a rare thing. With how good Prime and Netflix streaming is, there's really no need to download videos anymore.

To consider wether upgrading or not makes sense to you is a question of processing power really. The screen was great 7 years ago. Most people still don't have USB-C devices beyond their phone and if they have a mac they most likely have an iphone which is lightning. A professional could probably afford a powerful desktop for rendering and an okay machine for on the go. Having a need for a really powerful machine on the go, powerful by 2020 standards, would be a very niche case.

My daily driver is a 2012 Unibody (matte screen) Macbook Pro that I purchased in December 2012 (almost 8 years ago). It has a 2.6Ghz Intel Core i7, Nvidia GT 650M GPU, 16 GB of RAM, and a 2TB SSD SATA drive. Cosmetically, it is perfect. The only issue I have had, are a blown-out speaker, intermittent SD card recognition and not being able to save data to the SD card (it only reads). Also, the battery died after 5 years and the replacement one from NewerTech only lasted 2 years. The only part that shows some wear and tear is the power cord near the Magsafe connector but I put some tape around it. My favorite features of this computer are: Upgradability, I can even replace the optical drive with a second SSD, the keyboard, the Magsafe connector, and the glowing Apple logo. The things I don't like are: No HDMI port (needs a Mini Display to HDMI dongle), the fastest port is Thunderbolt 1, and the fact that the two USB 3.0 ports are too close together, making it difficult to connect 2 USB devices at the same time (design flaw).

This computer has a great keyboard, an SD reader, a great display, and it's fast enough to use Lightroom. I've held off buying another MacBook because of the lack of ports. Maybe, in 2021, I can finally replace it with something as usable and versatile.

When people complain about how expensive macs get, I remind them that I got 2 systems (mac OS and windows) that's as good as new even after 7 years of use. 7 years, what a crazy number. Have the same model. Best computer I’ve ever had. I got a pc with the same spec a few months previously. The Mac replaced it quickly.
I bough it a few months after starting my new company. As a CTO I needed to develop algorithms drag the machine every day to test sites and back again to work at home late into the night. To work with Mathcad and Texas Instruments Dev cards I did have to load Windows onto a virtual machine. Only recently have I replaced it with a fast gaming machine in the office, great for simulations etc. Running the laptop in the office day after day was great as I ran multiples screens. It’s still in regular use and I’ve had five pc’s during that time.
It has a place in my heart that I can’t see any other machine replacing.

My fiancée has been using her 2014 MBP 13 up to the present. Had a service center replace the battery. Replaced one of the buzzing speakers through iFixit. Now the other side speaker is buzzing. She hasn't been wanting for a new computer. She has a Switch for gaming anyway.
For myself I've been using a BTO (i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) 2013 MBA 11 initially as my primary work laptop but is now happily used during out-of-city trips for storing my camera's photos and remotely accessing office servers. A bloating battery also wrecked the power control board so I had to replace those both a few years ago.
Even having a car, I hate lugging around my current ASUS 15" gaming laptop to business meetings. Since I already have a serious workstation in the office, I'll be planning to just get a PC desktop for home VR gaming and have some kind of ultrabook as an EDC for on-the-go work. Hopefully a future ARM MBP 13" would be sufficient for my needs as Apple products have had the longest lifespans in our household.

I’m still using a 2010 iMac. I’ll admit that it doesn’t get the same level of use that yours is but it still gets the job done. The only problem that I’ve really had with it is that the SuperDrive took a crap a few years back, but it wasn’t really a big deal since I didn’t use it that much. I recently pulled it and swapped in a SSD and some additional RAM and it still runs like new - better than new actually. The only thing that will make me get a new one is the fact that it’s slowly becoming obsolete. I’m also waiting to see the new iMac. Sure, macs might cost more, but what’s the better deal, spending 2-3k once or a few hundred every other year? That’s not to mention all the time lost due to malware and hardware failures.

I upgraded my PC yesterday from 4 GB of RAM to 16 GB and from a 250 GB HDD to a 500GB SSD. It surely gave the system some more years of life. I can even run Premiere Pro flawlessly now! Also, the new boot time is less than a third of the original. It used to take around 4-5 minutes to boot up fully since a cumulative update (I don't know why) and now it takes around 30 seconds (POST time included).
Heck, I can even open some old Ableton Live projects that used to take like 5 minutes to load! They consumed half the RAM, thus forcing every other process to move temporarily to the pagefile which was on the HDD and... yeah. It was sluggish. Now, it can use the full 3 GB of RAM it needs, it loads in 1 minute max and no problem! (As you can tell, I am *really* happy about the upgrade. Especially since modern VSTs use a fair amount of RAM compared to past ones 😅)
So, if you ask me, I will stick with a system as long as it does its job well. If I notice some issues, I'll track down the outdated/faulty part and replace it with a better and newer one. If the system is maxed out and can no longer perform as well as it did, then I'm going to consider getting a new PC.
