If we constantly mold ourselves just to have weathly man , you will lose yourself. I love my locs and I love having tattoos and I want more. Idgaf if the society doesn’t like it, babe I’m BLACK I’m already supposedly at the bottom but I don’t see myself like that. I can’t. The right man and the right people will rock with me regardless and do already.

This society can be delusional! Ugh, our sisters are losing their essence daily, to "look presentable" to get rich men and to maintain an image for their careers. The willingness to be inauthentic today is sad. Some will spend every dime on body work, eyelashes, weaves/wigs, etc. to get by. The individuals who have altered their lifestyle to do those contradictory things that were spoken are the ones genuinely lacking. Like relaxing or straightening hair, wearing weaves and wigs to appear, cleaner or better is outrageous really.
I Unapologetically love my locs! Black women and girls 🗣Tell them to take it or leave it! I can guarantee that wealthy man rolling with you!! I bet you can run that business!! AS YOU ARE!!!

I live in the uk and have semi Freeform locs. As an educated professional, I definitely see that it’s been a hindrance in my progression. The unconscious bias has been really strong, particularly in my present job. I’ve had a conversation with my boyfriend about how he’d feel about me cutting them and though he’s supportive of me, he said he absolutely loves my hair as it is.
Side note, I have a lot of tattoos, though in places where they are not visible in my uniform.

Ouuuu this had me heated when I saw this live! Cause all of this is a lie! Gotta ask men what they like and for real who cares what they like. She can’t even come in live without wigs and makeup. Women with locs embrace all of themselves regardless

People are mindless ghetto is a location now it has become a person, place or thing. Technically nothing black women does is considered pristine or classy which is why respectability politics arose to try to show our humanity. But we were never respected. Being authentic is the best way to go and good on you for doing this video. BTW how classy was Lauryn Hill with locs especially in ex factor video :) Locs also can be neat looking, unsure of my texture but my hair generally does . I am aware of the texturism I have felt and our society pushes and have fallen into haveing unrealistic expectation around my locs. But i am getting better at accepting I wont have tracy chapman or lauryn hill locs lol

If you can’t love yourself with your hair at any level, then there’s no space for anyone else to. Locs are not ghetto. One could say fire engine red weave is, however it’s all apart of our culture. It’s unfortunate that this conversation takes up so much mental space for women.

As a 30 something woman who lives in what I call the land of rich white men, FL (it’s a beach city not Miami), I’ve been approached by more white men than black men. I was born here and with weave I attracted more black men after I went natural that changed, they (black men) look at me but rarely approach me. I will acknowledge the fact that I have waist length sisterlocks and most times they (white men) assume they’re braids even after I tell them they’re locs, they are not deterred. I have to wonder how much of this conversation is about the covert fetishization of black women especially when we attempt to assimilate whiteness. I’ve never dated any of the men who have approached me because I always have that in mind. How much of their attraction is rooted in our appearance vs genuine interest? I have pretty large tattoos as well, both hair and tattoos seem to draw them and become conversation starters.

A man that was interested in me told me he actually prefers women with wigs and he actually likes it deep down, but would still accept me.
I told him to go find someone else. Not interested. I don't want to be managed...It's best he goes for what he really likes. Not to talk about me then trying to be someone else to keep a certain type of man. Like honey, men that have a problem with the natural are not the type I'm looking for in the first place. I'm actually trying to avoid them, lol. Not that they are bad people, but they're just not for me.

I saw this live and as much as it may be hurtful it’s true to a degree. Wealthy men like slim women and no tattoos… and locs are not a part of the aesthetic. Same goes for braids.
We may feel a positive way about locs but the majority of society does think it’s low class unfortunately. I don’t care, I have locs anyways lol

@@Professoryu my dads a millionaire. From what he says it’s the way the dress, the way we conduct ourselves, not being a homemaker. He did marry a black woman but she’s not American. She’s Caribbean. He says black women as a collective need to carry themselves more like African and Caribbean women. If I’m being honest most of the dark skinned women I see that are with wealthy men are also from those places. When she’s American and black they usually choose the lighter skinned ones.

@ScorpioKLR, I’m a guy as well and my locs are down to the middle of my back. I’ve never had any issues with my hair in Corporate America (I’m an Accountant with an MBA) and my locs have an ombre dye effect (black to dark brown to honey blonde).
To be fair, I do get a retwist every 3-4 months, wash my hair regularly (every few weeks), keep it smelling fresh and moisturized and I make sure that the frizz is kept to a minimum. I’m also well spoken and I dress neatly. I’m sure that all of those factors play a part in how I’m perceived and the people at work do give me positive feedback regarding my presentation.
May I ask, how do you maintain your locs ?
