- This video covers the basics of starting seeds in rockwool. It difficult to underwater or overwater when you use rockwool, the fibers retain water very well AND hold oxygen in the pockets between the fibers. So start some seeds now!

Thanks for the information. I realize this video is 2 years old but you really helped me out today .
Thank you for sharing this! Learned lots
Your videos are hands down the best there is. Thanks for what you do
This is amazing thank you for such a straightforward and informative tutorial!!!!
I loved your video, great tips for me as a beginner.
Thanks for sharing. I hope to start my Lettuce & tomato plants tomorrow.
Your adorable, I so enjoy your videos, your love for gardening is shines through.
Thank you!
Thank you so much for this instruction. It is my vision that all kitchens be equipped with home growing systems like this so we can grow our own food.
Always informative!
Thank you Brandon, I appreciate that!
Looking forward to learning about how to use clay pebbles for seeds!
Working on it....I've got lettuce, pak choi, and tiny tim tomatoes growing nicely on the clay pebbles. These videos take time to make since I follow the growing process for a while and I'm a one person production team, so stay tuned, and thanks for your comment!
Looking good!
Great stuff Tikki! Have you ever tried using smaller pieces of rockwool? We can break up one of those cubes into about 20 pieces and the seeds will do just fine! I've got a video of this on my channel. Much more sustainable and cost efficient using smaller pieces!!
Hi Jimmy B, Funny you should ask...that is exactly what I am doing right now, I've got a bunch of smaller rockwool pieces germinating more lettuce for a future video....I guess great minds think alike! I'm going to go over to your channel now and check it out, and of course subscribe, thanks for the comment!
Always great info! Look forward to seeing how seed starting in clay pebbles works out for you!
Thanks Plant Addict....so far its working out...thanks for your comment!
AWESOME!!
I got a variety called Toy Choi. They grow decent compact size for jars. I cut them all back today just waiting for the regrowth. Regrowth takes a while so I might as well start some more today. I do 24 jars and I still can’t seem to have enough. The more I think about it. I think I just want to do some lettuce watching this video. I think I’ll do 12 red sail and 12 black seeded Simpson. 🥬 🥬 🥬 I use Britta water so I don’t have to mess with pH down. It’s more convenient for me. The seeds I have are from last year. save them all from the garden. A ridiculous amount for saving five plants last year. Thanks for the lettuce craving. I enjoyed the video.
Isn't it great to have so many varieties to pick from?! And so many seeds when you save your own, looks like you will be swimming in lettuce...enjoy, and thanks for the comment!
I will follow the lead on this video and start some lettuce today. I am also starting some Chinese greens using the same Kratky method and have six 1/2 gallon mason jars. The 1/2 gallon jars have the same sized opening as the one quart mason jars which allows the same 3" net cups work. Thanks for the effort and another great video.
Good going good goat! I started some Pak Choi as well today, and some Tiny Tim tomatoes, you are right....the 1/2 gallon jars are much better than the quart ones, I should get some more of those. Thanks for the feedback!
I might grow some winter lettuce having seen this, I've a few weeks before chilli growing season starts again. Great video!
Thanks Andrew! You must be someplace warm where you can grow chilies? Enjoy, and thanks for the comment!
@@TikkiOOO Not very warm... England! But I will start them under lights and then move to the patio in May.
Great video!! Perfect presentation. We've also had the best luck with rock wool. The only difference is that we soak the rock wool directly in hydroponic nutrient growing solution and the seeds grow like crazy. Keep up the wonderful videos!
That would be an interesting experiment to set up, soaking the rockwool in hydro solutin versus plain H2O, thanks for the comment, I appreciate it!
I would love to see the comparison!
Great video! Thanks for releasing such informative and interesting content. You’ve helped me tremendously in this new gardening venture, as I’m sure you have many others as well. I’m excited to see the results of the seed in pebbles experiment. Have you ever used rapid rooters or pellet seed starters? If so, how do they compare to the rockwool?
Hi Van H, no I haven't used the pellets, I've been using the rockwool successfully for years....and you know what they say, "if it ain't broke don't fix it"....but I wonder about the health concerns with inhaling the fibers from the rockwool, so I might be moving on to clay pebbles.....thanks for your kind comment, I appreciate it!
watched lots of vids tikki, great job, um have you ever considered making extra holes in that large rockwool cube, and put a seed in each one instead of dropping 2 or 3 in 1 hole..... or I honestly take those cubes and cut them into smaller cubes, you dont need that much rockwool at all' just pack the net cup with more pebbles.
and yea you already know the other method of growing without rockwool at all, keep up the great work tikki!
Nice 👌👍🏼
Thanks ✌️ Petani, you have a nice channel, good luck to you in growing!
Hello thanks for the video. How long does lettuce take from a seed to harvest? What light do you recommend for a small 4 to 8 jar setup? Thanks!
Great video! Very educational... Newbie here... Do I have to put a little vent on the container or should I leave it quite sealed? Thanks in advance...
Just the information I was looking for. Thank You! Can't wait for the clay pebble experiment to be finished. You can reuse the pebbles. Can the rockwool be reused because of all the roots of the plant in it after harvest?
Hello Genevieve, yes the clay pebbles can be reused easily, I bake them in my oven to sterilize after I wash them and they are good to go! Not true for the rockwool. Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it!
@@TikkiOOO Hi Tikki O. Could you tell me what temperature and for how long you bake the clay pebbles? Love your videos...I've learned so much from you. Thanks so much!
One might want to try & use Depend UnderPads. They usually come 12 to a pack, and their sizes are 36" x 21". Now this would allow a lot of growing seed beds to be made from. Then there is the Pride Disposable Underpads, they come 50 pads in a pack and measure 36" x 23". One could make a whole lot more seed growing beds from or from one pad, like a giant seed growing bed. Both are thin, easy to cut with a pair of scissors and hold in moisture. Just a thought...
What an interesting thought! Maybe someday.....thanks for the comment!
Nice...let us know your results for clay pebbles.....not as wasteful if works
Thank I'm Awaken!
can we place the rockwools into netpot directly with the seedlings or do we need to remove from rock wool?
I would like to know where you got your spray bottle from?
Hello there. What are you doing with the ones that not germinating? Do you throw away the rockwool or you reuse it ? Thank you
for how long you have to put the light on ?
Is there any reason not to start the seeds in rockwool in the netcups? That way when they are ready for the hydroponics container, just transfer them there?
So, I tried this method and got a white mold on top of the rockwool after I put them in Mason jars. I tried a mix of Hydrogen peroxide and water spraying the base of the lettuce but it didn't help. Than I unwrapped jars and there was a mold in water surface. Any ideas?
Where is a good place to buy seeds for hydroponics?
you can use coco coir rather than rockwool. its better
😁✌🖖👌👍😎
Thanks john....always!
She really green screened herself onto her own backyard.
Grow any Devil’s Lettuce?
I would like to know where you got your spray bottle from?
