According to the banner at the beginning of the telecast, I can deduce this telecast was November 27th, 1971. I was a month and a half old. My best years bowling league off and on between 1984 (13 yrs.) to 1997 (26 yrs.) Never got to watch telecasts this early, obviously. Thanks for sharing 👍.
My Dad, and My uncle both used The Brunswick " Johnny Petraglia LT 48 Bowling ball for many Years with Great Results before the advent of Urethane Bowling Balls.
Thank you so much for sharing these classic tournaments. I've tried to watch the newer ones but I keep coming back to the classics. The commercial for the Fling is funny!
maaaaan these are the men i grew up watching. Don Johnson, dickinson and Johnny P. were my favorites. was this televised? abc?. great to see all 3 right here, heck i liked Larry Laub too.
All Johnny Petraglia needs is a bow tie, vest and jacket and it'll look like he ran from his Sr. Prom to bowl on this show. To be honest, this is the 1st time I've ever seen a bowler on TV wearing a long sleeve shirt - EVER.
Laub in long sleeves as well, and a sleeveless sweater on top. Was it really cold in there? The difference in era was evident from the guy in the front row smoking a cigar. Reminds me of air travel back then. You had a smoking section where you could smoke, and a non-smoking section if you just wanted to smell the smoke without lighting one up yourself.
Until Earl Anthony came along, for me, bowling was the 1 sport where i liked EVERYONE, was happy for all who won. Sure, i had favorites Don Johnson, Jim Stephanich, Carmen Salvino, Dickinson, Teata)but i was happy for all. Then Anthony came along and started dominating and it got on my nerves. Then 2 more joined him….Holman…Roth. lol
i dont know what its lts like to have cameras on me but i do know what its like to have a decent group of people watching me after bowling 6-7 in a row to see if i get that doggone 300 finally. Never did lol. I bowled for tidy sums of cash in many a game that came down to last ball. I KNOW the pressure.
Watching Johnny P back at this stage is a bit wierd..in the days b4 Urethane balls.. instead of the extreme down and in hook he was known for to see him more pointing the rubber ball into the pocket just doesnt seem right lol...i also owned an LT-48 when i was kid as well
Great upload and fantastic finish! But am I the only one annoyed by alternate Dave Davis chatting away with bowlers on the approach for almost the entire telecast?
Nice get! It took me about 5 watchings to see that anything weird happened, and y'know, I'm still not sure I exactly see it! But I guess you're right.....
Don Johnson enjoying his first of two years as bowler of the year...before the SOAKER changed the rules of bowling. Kind of quaint compared to today, where I can throw my reactive resin ball down the lane, get 4 revs, hit thin, and blow the 5 pin into the 7, off the wall, and into the 10.
thx for the upload!! looks like petraglia had his church clothes on. back to the era before the bowling ball manufacturers sucked all the money out of the bowling community!!
+dettigs: Bowling sucks all the money out of the community now. $4 to $5 a game ? Unless you do the weekend specials or something but still, too much for my bank account and shoe rental's ridiculous. Glad in my bowling hay-day it was cheap.
Trying to figure out the logic of holding the left pinsetter in the down position while each bowler was up on the right lane. Just a little OCD about this I suppose.
It was related to the new automatic scorer shown around the 10:30 mark. If I recall correctly, after the bowler finishes the frame, the pinsetter stays in the down position until the next bowler selects their name on the dial (its the white pedestal behind the ball return). Once selected, it would set the pins as normal. While I've never used one, I've heard from others they were a huge pain in the ass to fix, physically and financially.
PointyTailofSatan believe me, bowling is a lot slower now. In the 60’s we started our five man team at 7:00 and finished before 9:00. Now on Monday’s we start at 6:20 and rarely are done by 9:15
The name of this channel Mike Ware? Growing up in CT, I use to bowl JBTs in the very early 90s and there was a kid named Mike Ware that bowled them. Are you the same Mike Ware?
The masking at this bowling center looks just like the one at the bowling center where Mark Roth made his famous 7-10 conversion in 1980. Is this the same place?
I'm sure they had something to do with the new scoring system that was installed at this center at the time. Never saw them used anywhere else other than in this video, and the other comment about it being a pain probably explains why. Also notice the deck coming down after first AND second balls, normally the A-2 only comes down after the first one.
Easily the worst bowling broadcast team in television history. Kyle Rote was totally monotone and had no grasp of the game of bowling, and Buzz Fazio, as much as I liked him as a player, just never had the knack for commentary. He was monotone, too, and added nothing of value in terms of commentary, frequently sounded confused, and often spoke so softly, you could barely hear him. Neither man could ever articulate exactly what was going on in terms of scoring and what the players needed to to to win or stay in the match. Speaking strictly as a career broadcaster (which I am), it's no accident that these two gentlemen only worked a small number of bowling telecasts. They were awful. Great to see this old telecast, though.

Thanks for posting....Don Johnson helped me with my game....he was a class act.
Indeed he was!
Johnny Ps sideburn game is on point. 😆. Epic
Epic 1970’s clothing and bowling!
and sideburns / Mutton chops
Petraglia still a bowler today and a heavy scorer too.
Great to hear Buzz provide color commentary!
Tremendous clutch split conversion by Don Johnson in the roll off!
Hell yes it was. Balls to the wall.....so clutch.

i was thinking the same thing. Looks too tight. Too clingy. That would bother me.

Wow, what a rare treat! and in color?!?!?!
Wow, killer sideburns on Petraglia. Great old video.
and Johnson too.
What a great match, some great commercials, despite the commentary!
I didn't realize that Chuck Norris led a bowling tournament in 1971.
The pressure will never be known by anybody even close to this level

I think Johnny's wearing his old outfit from Pizzarama
😂 or Shakeys
In the opening, they all look like they're in front of a firing squad!

Yeah, pretty immature on his part.
The Bowling Librarian Would Have Put Him In His Place.
6:56 are we not gonna talk about the fact that the eight pin stood back up in the seven pin spot?
@@whatamiwatchng582 thank you

You are 100% correct! Great catch!
Gary was cranking 3 revs here.
The Brunswick A-2 is an even better machine than I realized. That, or the 8-pin was closer to the 7-pin spot than I realized.
Thank you!

Don McCune changed everything. I was. in grad school at Purdue around then. Bowled against Johnson in Kokomo and Mc Cune in Munster.

Blame it on NASCAR. NASCAR, WWF and WCW killed Pro Bowling.

It's like they are bowling in slow motion, compared to today.

They had bowling commercials.

Kyle Rote & Buzz Fazio

Brunswick Custom LTD? never saw one used on tv!
Don Johnson loved to play Pan, at the Plaza
a lot of male beauty on display
Not Buzz but the other announcer super chill guy very relaxing to listen to.
I'm sure he smoked a carton of Raleighs a day.
So few overweight people and some were what we consider skinny today, but normal back then. What happened??
Fast food

these were very common masking units for the time. they came in single and double (like in the video). they came in about 6 colors
Yes, Roth's 7-10 conversion was at Mel's Bowl.
@@20alphabet Thats right. Mel also owns a diner. My friend Alice used to work there.

Petraglia takes forever on the approach compared to later in his career, when he would take a beat or two then go.
Nice sideburns, Johnny. lol. Can you see me now ?..Good ! He hasn't bowled in tournament play since 2012 FYI.

Right...ain’t never seen that
DowntownCanon most women wear long sleeves, I’ve done it a couple of times when the heat was lost at the alley.

Automatic scoring was the first stage
in the decline of bowling.
Disagree. It was rubber balls. Should go back to wood balls! Scratch that, rather we should go back to rocks! Real bowling.

Chris and Billy spoiled you, that's all. I never cared for Burton in comparison either, but compared to THESE two... yeah, Bo's got the job.
Fazio by himself could've cured insomnia.
