  • Episode 55: John and Leslie show the step by step preparation and install of their solid surface countertops. The IKEA cabinets have been prepared with steel corbels and wood to support the solid surface countertop. Remember Corian? Well, this is what solid surface countertops look like now! The beautiful countertops look just like quartz but they are lighter and less expensive than that material, plus they can be repaired if scratched or damaged. It is the perfect choice for the lake house!

Sorry, I missed it. What is the actual name of the countertop material? You mentioned Corian in the video description, is that actually Corian? Were building a new home and haven't decided on counter tops yet. Quartz is preferred but expensive

We used solid surface. One brand name is Corian but ours was a different brand. We love it. Purchased through Home Depot.

Can you please share brand and specific style? I really like how it looks. How is it holding up after a year? Thanks!

It still looks fantastic! It is similar to corian brand. Not sure of name but it is the one they sell at Home Depot.

Hey guys! Beautiful choice on the counter I swear nearly every choice you make I’m like “yea I would have done that” lol Couldn’t really tell what counter surfaces do you have by the stove? Is it the same?

Yeah, so we had a happy coincidence for the back countertops. IKEA makes panels out of the same material as the cabinet doors to use to cover up the sides of the cabinets so you can't see the white "boxes" of the cabinets. We ended up with these extra cover panels and they fit perfectly over the back cabinets. We were initially just using them temporarily, but we like them so much we glued them down. They are laminate, so should function just like a regular laminate countertop.

@@LakeLotBuild Ah! Very resourceful! Oh my OCD was also wondering… I have the same sort of galley kitchen design in our plans, did u need to put the outlets horizontal on the island due to drawer space restrictions or was that a design choice?

    • @LakeLotBuild

Just design choice! We just wanted them up and tight.

Can I check what adhesive you used to secure the quartz onto the steel/wood frame?

      High strength construction adhesive.

to reinforce the cabinets for the countertop - you added the additional strappings on top (wood slats and metal ) - causing the countertop to be raised a 1/2" or so - which you pointed out. Did you ever come up with a solution that you liked? Planning own space and that was a worry of mine, that unintentional 'reveal'.

To be honest, the metal pieces we used underneath haven't bothered us at all. You can see them unless you get up under the cabinet because they are set back from the edge about an inch or so. We decided to just leave as is. In our latest video we give a tour of the living and kitchen, so watch and see if it is something you can see and that would bother you.

@@LakeLotBuild thanks for the response - good to hear it isn't bothersome. Think I am just going to have a sheet of plywood on top of the cabinets to distribute the weight and edge band it and paint the same colors as the doors. Did you reinforce the actual downward force at all? like the 'legs' or 'walls' of the cabinet? Or just the top to help with the cantilever?

Great job on the kitchen. I like the slate backsplash and how that ties in with the dark sink, faucet, cabinet hardware, appliances and chairs. Saving $2500 with faux-quartz works for me, too. Thanks for all the great ideas

Excellent kitchen design and idea. I love your ideas and hence I am going to use IKEA cabinets in my Lake House Kitchen. I would also like to use counter top similar to your large counter top on the island.
Since I am Michigan, do you know what would be a common name to use for it to see if I can find someone here who can make it?
Thank you for taking time to post all the details and sharing your ideas with us. That is very kind and generous of you.
BTW< I used ICF too. Thank you

It is from IKEA. Hard to source sometimes in the US, but the Kansas City store finally got one in for us. It is their "integrated" fridge.
