This is exactly what I needed to hear right now. I read the article and it is a great lesson for all of us. I am lost in my 60's. I have never been lost in life before. Always knew my goals and a purpose to get out of bed. I was an independent single mother with a rewarding nursing career and a comfortable home. Then as the kids grew up and moved away I was glad to have my house to myself and planned to downsize. To late! My son moved back home with a baby in tow then a year ago I became very ill and had to stop working and rely on disability insurance for income. Suddenly I am no longer independent and feel vulnerable having to give up a great 40 year career and financial independence. I am now having to sell the house for financial reasons. I have no dreams or even a hint of what I want out of the rest of my life. This article is a great starting point for me. Funny thing is I couldn't wait to retire when I was working. A healthy recovery and onto soul searching for a happy future in retirement must be part of my plans. Thank you Margaret for sharing this today. Much appreciated.,

hi, cindy! i am in flux also. didn't plan to retire as early as i did, worked as a respiratory therapist for a long time - toyed with the idea of going per diem but health issues arose and it was time. today's conversation is a good one.

Karen I know as health care professionals we don't usually consider our own health fragility and feel we can go on as long as we want. Sucks when reality sets us straight. Sad part is we have so much knowledge to share still. Life sure is very different now.

I have lately been making a list of what I want. How I want my 60's to be. Adding daily to my
list really helps me stay focused on me. In other words working on myself. For me by doing this I can be ready for anything in a positive way..Sometimes we can focus on others to much and we loose the opportunity of what we want what will make us happy. We are in charge of our own happiness not anyone else. Great topic. Blessings

What a beautiful message for us today! So many of us are struggling with changes in our lives. Thank you for reminding me of storyboards! I have enjoyed creating them and the process has always been deeply revealing and informing.
I have a favorite poem framed and hanging on the wall behind me. I have always found it comforting. Here are some lines from it that I find very powerful.
"Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy."
from the poem "Desiderata" by Max Ehrmann

Vision boards can be powerful. There's a lot of information online and on RUclips about how to create a vision board. You can make the vision board on a poster board or on the computer. Some people create vision boards using Pinterest. The key is to place the vision board where you can see it every day. Don't tuck it away.

I think that mortality is something that should be talked about a lot more. Its such a taboo topic and I think if people were to talk about it more that maybe would have more of a positive outlook on it. plus its kind like you said its a blessing or lucky if we make it at an older age as it can hit us at any age. idk just a thought . Lovely video like always !

I found this useful. I am getting what I want in my 60s about 80% of the time! Still working in the other 20%. I am grateful for what I have. And for you videos, Margaret.

Thank you, Margaret, for your open heart. This video reminded me of the saying, "It ain't over until it's over!" So, for myself, I think the moral to keep it firmly in mind is that I/we can still accomplish something. When I was a child I wanted to go to Art School. That did not happen for many reasons, but I still have that hankering, but am loath to spend scads of money on education at my time of life (even if they would accept me into a class), so the challenge is to find a school where I could audit classes.

As always you hit the nail right on the head,Margaret! My thoughts all contained in your words. So, what now?! Sixties long gone ( I know that’s just a title and englobes so many lovely people searching their lives) I’ll be eighty this year ( our month!) and have these thoughts milling around in my head. But am so grateful for my life and family, second great grandchild , a boy this time, due in June. My girls, my grandchildren - a joy. Just don’t know if I show my appreciation enough...
May everyone find love and peace in their lives. And thank you , Margaret for inspiring us all!

Great video. I think about death consciously every day to make me appreciate every day of life. The problem with aging is family ages too and some need caring so you have to find compromises between your dreams and reality. I'm working on achieving a happy compromise.

Margaret, thank you for today's reflection. I am grateful for my life. At the same time I am anxious about the future. I am nearing retirement age, but I don't see retirement as ceasing to work. My hope is to go from a 9 to 5 job to consulting. I'm eager to travel. Still I know that whatever my plans they are dependent on health. Though I have more retirement savings than many of my friends, I am concerned about finances in "retirement." My consciousness of my vulnerability and mortality makes me hold each day and the people in my life as precious.

Great Margaret. I really like how you make a video to talk about an article (and then have the article if we want to read it). Because to actually hear you talk about it, is so different than how I might read it, or hear it in my mind while reading it. Your voice is so much gentler than how I might hear it in my head, if I were reading the article to myself. Hope that makes sense ;) Our own voices and tone can be not so good all the time. Great tips, they definitely help.

Sixty and Me: Margaret thank you for the reply. This happened last year and I decided to change my life. Took a early retirement and decided to get closer to nature. I decided that I would become a WWOOFER and I'm working on a goat farm making cheese in California. This winter I will stay in Mexico. I am just beginning to relax and feel better less afraid of the future. I feel stronger. Watching for my doors to open.
