The moral of the story? Never steal a Game Boy from someone who's willing to go to Japan for a terrible DS game. Going to Detroit was N O T H I N G for him.
As someone from Michigan, you are a brave man for trying to confront people in the Detroit area. A lot of people are kind and good, but Detroit has a reputation for a reason. You deserved to get that GBA back just for having the balls to do that.
Even though you didn't file an official report or try to catch the guy, I bet since his family was helpful and handed it over without even accepting the reward, he probably got an earful from them once he got home.
An earful? If I found something like that at my job I would of taken it home too. Only earful he would of gotten was probably leaving the air tag in his garage. Also why take a reward for returning something someone you knew stole. The reward is more of an enticement for people to help.

The neighbors all were like yeah as far as I know I ain’t seen it at all and they were honest the elderly lady in blue was just a person who probably doesn’t keep her eye on her adult son and son in law at all times cause they’re adults
Kind of goes to show you that there are really bad and really good people out there. The law moves too slow, people have to make things happen on their own without relying on police
Nick roaming the streets of Detroit reaching into wrinkly paper bags in front of strangers and hopping fences to retrieve a Game Boy is absolute INSANITY and I love it
Ofc the streets of Detroit have a scammer out of all places. I expected Ohio, and Detroit because it has the worst criminal activity I know of in America. I'M NOT MAKING AN OHIO JOKE YOU FU.
that guy totally took it. you can SEE the panic in his eyes when you brought up finding the airtag in the garage. mother-in-law was totally chewing him out in the minutes you spent waiting outside their house
The game boy advanced modded out seems like a great gift. My sister lost her gambit in the waiting room of the hospital on the day I was born and I would want to give her one for her birthday
Didn’t expect to wake up and see this I didn’t think this video was gonna get posted but seeing myself in the FedEx was nostalgic holy moly great stuff Nick
Your composure and demeanor, sticking to 'misplaced' instead of 'stolen', despite the shaky hands and overwhelming emotions is incredible. This was incredible to watch, great recording and editing.

It's so nice that pretty much everyone's responses to him asking around were like "Oh my god that's horrible how can I help?" Even the thief's family went out of their way to find it for him.
Yeah and like wtf did they think somebody is gonna do, just leave without at least asking for their property back? Some people wouldn't be nearly that polite about it
So dont blame the police. They have to work within the justice system. The police could be sued. But at least what the police could have done is use the tracker. But then to get a warrant it would take time etc. This isnt their first rodeo, they know they have little options especially if he doesn't want the thief prosecuted.
@@ChrisWijtmans the police threatening nick to stop engaging in legal activity, refusing to provide legitimacy or in any way help him, and failing to not be an active obstacle to his problem rather than helping, is a problem. they had the choice to help within the confines of the law and chose not to.

The bureaucracy is like this everywhere. I just spent all of last week trying to get help for a trapped dog, and all the apartment offices and the humane society would do was bounce me between each other telling me to keep "reporting the noise" so they could file reports.
I lived in Windsor for a while right across from Detroit. Got broken into and they stole a couple of antique, amber, hand-carved smoking pipes. The same thieves had systematically broken into every place on the street. Every single one. I called the cops and they wouldn't even take a list of what was stolen. I explained the pipes were unique and easily identified and asked what I should do if I found them for sale in a pawn shop. The cop, leaving, said, "Then I guess you're s--- out of luck."
As a former FedEx employee, I can say that many of them are, in fact, extremely chill. There are certainly some that aren't, but some of the best friends I've made in my life, I met through FedEx.
@@PlanetComputer Oh, that's more likely due to the not chill people treating packages poorly, leading to them getting damaged and getting sent to QA. If they're damaged beyond repair, they get sent to the Shadow Realm.
Yeah I think the ultimate moral of the story is never call the cops... If anything they tried to intimidate you away from the neighborhood, if there's not anything in it for themselves then they will not do anything, if you would have said that you were going to prosecute they would have started a whole investigation..
I really felt the cops showed up because at least one of the neighbors called them on him!! Did any of you feel like that?! Such an odd coincidence, ah?

Hmmm, it seems the thief knew that AirTag was some sort of tracker since they took it out. I wonder why they didn’t try to throw it away or anything. Taking it out and putting it in your garage definitely isn’t the smartest thing to do. Maybe he didn’t think someone would actually try to get it back.
i think i can explain that, actually - AirTags start beeping when they get separated from their owner, to prevent people using them for stalking and stuff. the guy probably got annoyed by the beeping and took it out lol
@@babylonian apple didn't actually add the tracker alert beeping until February 2022, so its more likely he just gave the kids the gameboy as is and one of them just took it out to play with and left it in the garage not knowing what it was, if the story played out today the guy in the airport would probably drive to a remote location after work to search for trackers on stuff before taking them home with him due to the general public being a lot more aware of item trackers like AirTags
The salt in the wound when the airtag beeped when he picked it up, it was like it was saying: "Hey! you found me, great job!". Glad he was able to recover the Gameboy Advance though, I can't imagine losing years of memories from a device you had as a kid.
I was flabbergasted, i pretended a random corner in my room was a camera like in the office and i looked directly at in and went "can you believe this?"
Yea, because he was playing sounds through it, the other day. Imo if they were really planning on stealing it they would defo not have just thrown it into a garage.
this has got to be the best and biggest endorsement for air tags. After watching this video, I'm sure sales MUST have skyrocketed at least by a small margin. No one ever plans on having their stuff stolen and you may never get to use the air tag. but as the old saying has proved time and time again. *Better to have it and Not need it, Then to Need it and Not have it*
@@whyistheresky He just had to say it. He was on camera. He didn't say Nick literally couldn't go to talk to these people, but they know the area better than Nick. The cop had the responsibility to inform Nick that he should not do this. If he did anyways - hey, he warned him not to do it. He knew full well he'd do it anyway if he planned to, just wanted to make it clear probably. I know cops in the US aren't the most liked people and I understand why, but if you approach everyone with "us vs them" mentality you will miss even the most obvious acts of simple human decency.
For real. First I was sad (in a sweet kind of way) because, wow, happy couple, and they're young and beautiful. Then BAM sad in a different kind of way because no longer together. None of our business, I suppose.

I think they meant it could spook the neighborhood and they might get the cops on him for snooping around. I don't know the laws in Michigan, but in some states you don't have to identify yourself or what you're doing if there's no probable cause for you doing something suspicious.

What got me was if she really liked it so much how did she end up losing it so fast. If it really was something she valued, you know it wouldn't have left her sight.
I did something similar with a $20k speciality piece of video gear that I had embedded 2 air tags inside! Spent 3 days tracking it through downtown Dallas. One thing I learned in the whole process, is that the police aren’t really there to help you. They have no capacity to do anything unless it’s right in front of their face. You HAVE to be your own detective today if you want any justice in property theft.
I had my apartment broken into in 2010 while I was at work and my things stolen. Cops wouldn’t do anything. I had to do all the detective work and found out a friend of a friend was selling all my stuff. The thief only ended up getting a charge for receiving stolen property since they didn’t have enough proof to charge for the B&E and theft. I never had any of my things returned.
When you started mentioning the cash reward, I was just PRAYING you wouldn’t come face-to-face with the thief and end up PAYING him for stealing your shit. I am glad that isn’t how it turned out.
What I want to know is if it was within a few months or sooner after, and she just stuck around out of guilt. If they broke up a year later over something, life happens. But man, she may have planned it.. this happened and she just froze lol. When I saw her in the gamer girl chair… it kind of made me think ah, both streamers. But at the start not gonna lie… I saw him, then her and was like…is he a rich lawyer or did he just win in life? Something felt a bit off I dunno. It felt maybe college relationship, money or famous streamer type thing going on behind the scenes. I don’t know her, but I just got vibes something was off. I think a lot of us felt that at the start.
Crazy thing is the ex actually specifically asked him not to put her (image) in the video (esp. from their vacation), and he did not care. She made a tweet about her not consenting being in this video.
Im sorry about you and Samantha, but I'm so happy she allowed for this video to be released and I hope your on good terms still this was an amazing story and you truly went above and beyond.
This whole time I wondered what would have happened if some guy saw you hopping that fence, assumed you were a robber and pulled a gun out. Can't have shit in Detroit man
To be fair, he can’t exactly film it while he’s doing the most direct action that would be required to get it back. He most likely had the police involved in order to demonstrate the limitations that they have when they actually do their job (as opposed to not or going “off-script”) and just being a “law abiding citizen” that takes the “right” steps towards his goal. Nick probably doesn’t want to end up like that guy who filmed himself crashing his plane for sponsorship money and allowing the general public to see how he committed a federal crime 🤷🏽♂️
Theft at airports is insanely common. Worked at one for a bit, they knock bags off, have the person in charge of picking stuff up and getting it back on track drive it to a blind spot and then grab it. Ways around all locks and types of bags. Put anything you care about in carry on.

I've never seen a lost and found, but definitely takes a little moral greyness to take shit you find at work that don't belong to you at home, but depending on who you are, you get used to taking lost pencils on the floor at school in an official setting where its kinda more common.
@@Jeff4theRaidridiculous. You don't take things that don't belong to you, that's stealing. Ok, let's stop pretending. The dude works at the airport, and the dude stole it. He did not "bring it home to find the owner", that is not allowed, why would he risk his job lol. There are literally hundreds of cases of TSA agents ar people working at lost and found stealing electronics.
Most likely scenario is she left it behind someplace and the dude found it. There's no identifying information, and he probably figured there's no chance the person was going to come back for it considering they've probably just flown out of the airport. He might have even kept it around until the end of the day in case the person showed up and then figured fuck it, they're not coming back, victimless crime and the kids in the house might like it. I doubt we're talking about someone rummaging through luggage looking for shit to steal. It's still on balance probably not a cool thing to do because the airport probably has a lost and found and it's clearly a valuable and personal item, but I still wouldn't want to judge the dude without knowing him personally. What to do with lost property with no identifying information is always a little ethically ambiguous. Like if I found a wallet with some money in it and no identifying information or any way to find the person, I'd keep it. The only thing that makes this different is that the airport probably has a lost and found. Also some people are bringing up the air tag having been taken out as a proof of guilt, but dude I would not know what the fuck an Apple air tag was if I found one, before seeing this video. I'd never even heard of them. They probably just put it out there because it was beeping.

I agree with you in the fact I also enjoy longer format videos, I watch 2-4 hour videos from my favorite content creators daily but when you’re trying to take a 10 minute video and force it into a hour long thing to maximize profit it’s different because all that filter you throwing in there gets boring and I’ll admit I got bored so many times watching this video where i almost skipped to the end. 😢 but you are right some of his other long format videos are great, i’ve watched all of them, and a few ive watched and enjoyed the entirety, but not every one is a winner, i was hoping you were going to say all this when i read “i’m gonna be honest with you the longer content…” instead of just kissing his cheeks instead, but anyway

He works at the airport, might've just been cleaning and found it or picked it up as an employee, but how is he supposed to know who it belongs to at an airport? I've never seen a lost and found, but definitely takes a little moral greyness to take shit you find at work that don't belong to you at home, but depending on who you are, you get used to taking lost pencils on the floor at school in an official setting where its kinda more common.
You don't know what they were planning on doing with it! They might have been planning on returning it. Don't assume they were trying to steal it.

@@fumibad I don't mean what he said to the lady. That was obviously done on purpose, I agree. I am talking about his final thoughts on the story.
@@Jack-sy6di I am not sure if you are very young or simply have no morals. Victimless crime? So if I kill someone but I do not know their name, is it also a victimless crime? No, under no circumstances is it ok to steal other peoples expensive electronics. ESPECIALLY not from your workplace, I am baffled that you would even try and defend this lol. There is no legitimate, legal or ethical way to do what he has done. It is not for him to decide, and if he took this, you bet he took other stuff before and after. Unless you found it in the middle of a desert or random remote place, there is no excuse in taking it with you. And I repeat this is a widespread issue in places like airports, amusement parks etc. you have people working for very low wages with acess to nice things. There have been many news stories and investigations into stuff like this, it is usually Lost and Found. Baggage handlers and TSA that steal.
@@Jack-sy6di What to do with lost property with no identifying information is OBVIOUSLY to place it in the lost and found.
There is no ambiguity here, if you can't find the owner, you wait to see if the owner finds it. You don't take it because someone *might* never come to find it. That's complete backwards logic.
