Dragon's Rising is really showing how to have mature writing in a kids show. I love how Sora and Lloyd don't have fixes to their problems, its up to them to discover how to cope with their struggles. Having such grounded character arches is exactly what Ninjago has been missing for years now

Before Ninjago Dragons Rising season 2, Lloyd was never my favorite ninja. Like you said, he was great in the Oni Trilogy, but during the 11 minute era, he felt like he was on autopilot. But with Lloyd struggling with mental health issues and letting his visions go by is really satisfying to watch on screen

this is kinda how i feel with kai. he was always my least favorite/least interested in, but because of his role as mentor/parental figure to Wyldfyre, he’s proven he can be mature, and compassionate, and gave me a new perspective on him.

I feel like Lloyd's visions can also be taken as a PTSD allegory (which does tie into the broader category of anxiety, but still.) Arin even points out that Lloyd's been through a lot, so it makes sense for that stress to show up as nightmares. His straight-up panic attacks when he has a vision are reminiscent of flashbacks, too; the only difference is that he sees the future as well as the past.

Finally, a video on DR S2's work on mental health, a aspect i never thought it would be touched in Ninjago but it is , i can relate to Lloyd's paranoia and fear that he had in this season.

Lloyds troubles with the nightmares and visions he has I instantly related to, I struggle so much with nightmares myself and have since childhood due to numerous events, including abuse. That fact that it's constant throughout this season really sold me that the team is taking this seriously and may have genuine personal experience with such instead of using only for drama or shock value. On top of that I struggle persistently with insomnia, heavy anxiety and damaging intrusive (Along with compulsive) thoughts. Dragon's Rising really made me love Lloyd as a character, but the second season had me completely hooked on him, because it got me to reflect on my own health and behavior. And that's why I've always loved Ninjago

Lloyd’s a character I can relate to so much. Complicated relationships with parents, anxiety and just trying to be a good person in general when you doubt yourself. Lloyd’s writing in dragons rising is almost perfect, and I love that he’s getting written this way.

Being a rewatcher of this series, it’s satisfying to see his progression all the way from the beginning. The realism in this season’s just too real. 😮
As a fellow person that also has anxiety (mainly with typical teen drama and whatnot), I can honestly relate. Glad to see it shown here. 😊

Another thing that I like( and the season itself mentions) is that this ties to the dragon rising technique. You need to unlock it when you are in motion with world. Lloyd wasn't, with these visions he thought he couldn't do, he didn't find the calm and probably thought he will never. But as Rontu said, the visions are possible futures,he can't control the time or the world, but can cope with these, let them go. And that moment when he lets the visions go, not holding them back anymore, not only found a way to fight against shatterspin but a way to come to peace with these.
Can't wait for part 2, and see what Ninjago has in store. I'll have to lower my expectations a little tho, but I'm still excited

Reminds me of Vakama in Lego Bionicle. He has visions of the destruction of his homecity, but only has vague instructions on what to do. That makes him doubt his qualities as a team leader. He doesn't suffer from insomnia though.
The stress does a lot to him, he starts out as anxious, then becomes overly irritable and eventually snaps and temporarily joins the bad guys.
Still, most badass character, cause his story literally ends with him threatening the Big Bad that he'll destroy the universe if the Big Bad doesn't stop chasing him.

Ever since watching dragons rising i’ve related to sora super hard. her entire story is almost a perfect match to my life its actually kinda scary? like who on the ninjago team was stalking me throughout childhood what?? But then s2 came out and seeing lloyd and his character and struggles i look back on before dragons rising and see how if sora wasnt their i would probably relate to lloyd more (even tho lloyd is one of my least fav ninja) I have struggled for a long time with mental health. literally everything u said in this video i have. Most noticeable for me is insomnia. i have sleep paralysis and the hallucinations i see go crazyyy. very scary, dont recommend. but its made me loose a bunch of sleep because im so anxious. I rather loose sleep than have a chance of getting sleep paralysis that night! and it affect me during the day too. seeing this happen with lloyd has made me actually kinda somewhat like him. I dont know how dragons rising does it but its made me like so many characters that i previously didnt find that interesting. Awesome vid! Keep it up ❤

Even though I don’t struggle with anxiety, (Which is a BLESSING FROM GOD! 🙏😮‍💨) I do struggle with insomnia, intrusive thoughts, nightmares, and even depression at times when I can’t get any sleep. And seeing Lloyd struggle with something so relatable almost made me feel like crying. The fact he’ll never be able to get rid of them really hit home for me, but also when he was able to except that-and that helped him to move forward is what made Lloyd my second favorite ninja now! 💚
Amazing video, man! You deserve SO MUCH MORE subs!

Throughout the franchise, I’ve continued to find Lloyd relatable on so many angles, which is a major reason why I connect with and admire him so much. I was a little uncomfortable with it at first, but I began to appreciate the hidden messaging behind Lloyd’s visions in Dragons Rising. I can certainly relate to intrusive thoughts and have had to learn how to live with my concerns and even haunting memories that suddenly pop into the forefront of my mind sometimes. I relate to some of the other issues too. His story arc in the first half of Season 2 of DR helped me find him relatable and inspiring again and encouraged me through real struggles.

I honestly love Dragon's Rising- I had mixed feelings in S1 but after S2, it really pulled the plot together and I fell in love w/ Ninjago all over again. Lloyd has been my favorite character from the get-go. But, seeing all the struggles Lloyd went through in S2 and how it permanently affected his character made me love his character even more. I honestly cannot wait for the writers to resolve other conflict like with his relationship with his dad, Harumi (if she is ever seen in Dragons Rising) and the way he has to accept the role as a mentor and deal w/ the pressure of having the fate of two students on his shoulders, not to mention the possible guilt from Kai getting stuck in limbo. Cant wait till S3 comes out and see the plot advance!!!

  • @HelloThere-nm5pb
    @HelloThere-nm5pb Месяц назад +4

The fact that Lloyd's visions can be interpreted as a an allegory for intrusive thoughts really resonated with me. I'm gonna get personal here and this involves some NSFW topics (no details its uncomfy) so to anyone reading this, feel free to skip.
So, a while back, I got caught up in some.. sexual incidents to say the least. Nothing downright despicable but still had a lasting impact on me especially considering that I was still in middle school. My main problems after those experiences were a lack of trust and intrusive thoughts. I'll focus on the intrusive thoughts part as since that is whats relevant here. Everytime I had any sort of physical touch, I would have unwanted sexual thoughts. This happened with *anyone* including friends, family, and hell, even total strangers. It would come up during hugs, pats on the back, high fives, kisses on the forehead or cheeks, and even eye contact in some particularly bad cases. I tried to shut the thoughts down which worked at first but they just wouldn't go away. After a good year and a half or so I learnt that these thoughts don't represent me as a person and that I shouldn't be so harsh on myself for something I can't control. Unfortunately, recently, I had basically a really bad dream with more unwanted sex scenes and it was horrible. The worst part is that the next day, I had my last day of the school year and the whole day was filled with the intrusive thoughts of that dream coming to my mind and I wasn't able to enjoy the day at all. Watching season 2 of Dragons Rising and this video made me remember that I can actually cope through this, no matter how bad it gets. It's hard, and boy does it make me so uncomfortable whenever they come up, but yeah, I guess I have to simply find my inner peace too to deal with it.

the way you explain is exactly what i took from this season, dragons risings continues to explore so many more complex issues in such a way that not only younger audiences can become more familiar with these issues and maybe even relate to their favorite characters but also in a way that fans with a more complex understanding of these issues to speak what they have come to understand and share that with others to find connections with other people who share the same struggles that these characters might overcome. i am simply blown away on how Lloyd’s visions were handled and so hopeful for future seasons to see how the writers might handle other issues. very excited for the next part to see what the writers have cooked up! amazing video i really enjoyed watching this :D

Loved this so much. I'm a psych person so this was a part of DR Season 2 that was really interested in. Lloyd has been through a lot, and some of the new things he's facing post-merge have caught up to him in the form of panic attacks and severe nightmares/visions. As someone with anxiety and has had trouble sleeping when my stress levels get too high, I was very intrigued by his arc this season. I'm excited to see how Lloyd's connection to the dragons will continue throughout the series.

Really excellent video as always! I appreciated the inclusion of these themes while I watched S2, but as they’re not something I have much experience with/know much about, I wasn’t sure whether to applaud their portrayal or not. So I’m really glad to see that people who this story is meant to represent _do_ feel represented by it.
Everything you said at the end put my thoughts and feelings into words so so well. (mini anecdote:) I’ve been watching DR with my brother, and both of us have found ourselves relating heavily to different characters/stories. So to see how we both see ourselves in different parts of DR, _and then_ seeing more people online talking about more parts of it… it’s so cool to me that so many people are connecting to the show in this way. Really shows the care that’s being put into it.
Also loved your point about how S2 expanded on the “calm inside” scene, making it feel less random. DR has demonstrated that it’s capable of following up on loose threads and building upon itself, which is SUCH a relief. I can finally sit back and watch the show without being disappointed when something isn’t immediately resolved lmao.

something i hope is that in part 2 they won't forget lloyd is struggling mentally. ninjago sometimes had a problem that once an arc is over, they kind of forget it happened....
i of course don't expect it to be the main part of lloydd charcater in part 2, but still i kind of hope that they still show that Lloyd's visions are still slightly affecting him
especially since it looked like lloyd was seriously struggling in part 1 (he even had panic attacks) it'd be weird to see him suddenly all okay like nothing has happened.
but that's just my perosnal opinion

I went into Dragons Rising months late.
Not because I forgot it existed, no.
I first watched it when only part 1 of season 1 was out and at the time I hated Lloyd so much that I just could not stomach the idea of watching another season with him as one of the main leads.
I didn't watch it for ages, but I've forced myself to watch it this time and I'd like to just say. I am not disappointed.
    A bit of context:
When I say "I hate Lloyd" I don't mean it in an "Oh he's a crap protagonist" way. I mean it because of what he said to Kai in season 4 episode 1. Yeah. Ages ago, right. "But Lloyd (yes... my name is also Lloyd... ironic) why does that matter anymore? It was like 14 seasons ago!!"
It matters because he called Kai selfish for feeling survivors guilt.
This was a time when Ninjago wasn't so good at portraying mental health in a good way. It made me, and most likely others who have been through survivors guilt feel extremely upset that it was chalked up to Kai's "selfishness", so... I really hated Lloyd. And for good reason!!
    Now.
    *Now*.
Oh boy, that's something to talk about.
When I went into Dragons Rising, I was fully ready to hate it. I was doing Live Commentary on a discord server I'm in with two people who had already watched the show.
This series is one of the best written aspects of ninjago that I've seen since... well... forever.
Commentating on the series as I watched it really helped, too. As I got into completely new territory, I was commenting on just about everything I saw, and I'm glad I did because it means I'll never forget my first reaction to anything.
I was expecting to dislike it because Lloyd was the main focus most of the time. And for a short while, I did.
I finished part 1 of season 1 thinking "Ugh. Lloyd." And then I got onto part 2.
    Part 2 was more intense.
It introduced the old ninja again which made things chaotic but not hard to follow, and the split in focus made it easier to continue watching.
    And then.
    Season 2.
I went into season two being told my my friend, Astro: "Lloyd will be fiiiiiiine. This will be totally fine and he will face no consequences at all for his actions!" Which... taking their tone, was definitely a lie. Which I was shocked about because usually Ninjago characters walk out of traumatising events fairly unscathed.
But oh boy. Nothing. And I mean *nothing* could have prepared me.
I watched episode one and two and Lloyd was quickly deemed a favourite character.
I started yelling at certain points, even going as far as to say I didn't care about Kai, I just wanted to know if Lloyd was okay (which is crazy, Kai is one of my favourites!)
I think the moment that really proved the maturity of this series and how good it was for me in particular though was when Lloyd verbally mentioned that he'd been having panic attacks.
It was a shock, to say the least, because never, *never* in my 16 years of living have I ever heard any show that I've watched verbally mention a panic attack. And that's... a lot of shows.
I've seen them implied, but never verbally mentioned. And that's what sold it. They did something that other production companies are terrified to do. They brought light to mental health not by showing it, but by verbally confirming that it IS that. Me and I'm sure hundreds of other people were so happy to hear that.
Lloyd's character was pretty much sold to me since then. I kept up my Commentary, but - except for scenes with Jay, because nobody is better than Jay - I started talking about Lloyd a lot more and paying a lot more attention to his character.
I'd say I've been through the same as Lloyd but I really haven't, aha. But I do suffer anxiety and mild insomnia and while I'm not certain what my insomnia is caused by, part of me believes its the fear of being alone. (Me and my sister share a room, I physically cannot fall asleep until she comes to bed). So to see a character going through the same as me? To be able to connect so deeply with a character I used to hate?
    Ninjago is amazing.
Dragons Rising really proves that the show has matured.
Dare I say its better than The Owl House at handling mental health? (And that's saying a LOT)
If you made it this far, well done, you read my probably incoherent rants ^^ I'd say you deserve a prize but I've got nothing to offer so...
In case I don't see you, good afternoon, good evening and good night!

It's truly amazing to see one of your notifications and always know i'm gonna enjoy the video, so keep it up! As for Lloyd's story in season 2 i absolutely loved it but i didn't realize just how much i related to him in this season until i saw this. Lately i've been struggling a lot with really bad stomach aches due to anxiety and always fearing the next time they would come or that they would get worse just like Lloyd. I also really loved how it expanded on his already amzing arc in season 1instead of just dropping it all together. One thing i am worried about tho is that dragons rising might use his visions just as a plot device to start off every season once he overcomes his fear, it really worries me because the show might get a lot more boring and monotone. Also a few weeks ago i saw a review on this season which had a few things that didn't really sit well with me, of course everyone has thwir own opinion but on this topic in particular the person described Lloyd as childish and that he should just like man up becausr their just visions which is really a terrible way of describing his character arc not only because of how geniuenly scaru the visions would be but also for all the implications about his mental health and overall state after experiencing these visions for a long time. One thing i wish they did is not even in this season but in the elemental mechs shorts. I really think it would have been cool if they hinted at this problem by giving Lloyd headaches or mayebe him being a bit sleepy during the short but i do still think that it wasn't completely necessary. I would also really like if you made a video, mayebe longer down the line after part 2 comes out about Arin's arc since as of now it seams like really great set up for him and it also dives in with the aspect of insecurity, like we see in episode 9 when he fights lord Ras.

so my own anxiety stems from foul language and the traumatic experiences I had with it. Every time I’m exposed to it, I get anxious and frustrated. As you can imagine, the internet is not the most welcoming place for me. As many times as people have gotten mad at me for feeling this way and insisted that they’re “just words,” I just want to emphasize my point for anyone reading this. Profanity is not a victimless crime. It hurts people. There is no benefit to be gained from it that cannot be gained elsewhere. Please show people some mercy

I’m really glad people can relate and are inspired by this. Personally, I didn’t think that Dragons Rising was trying to address this subject when I watched it, due to how unfocused season two has been. I was much more inspired in my own battle against anxiety by Monkie Kid s4, which is absolutely masterful. But I never would have given that series a chance without this channel! You assured me that if I stuck with the series, there would be a powerful heart behind the cringe, and I’m truly glad I listened.
I’m glad that others have connected with Lloyds story here. I’m always excited to see characters taken into interesting new territory. I just wish the series focused more on this interesting concept instead of giving a ton of attention to “I’m a spell taking on physical form and the series is all about me now.” Clearly tons of people can relate to that one. 🙄

(VERY long comment ahead, but I also had a lot of thoughts, sorry in advance. This comment could have been way longer, but I decided to try and not be as detailed in my thoughts)
I had been spoiled a small bit on the fact Lloyd was going to have visions and panic attacks (It released a bit later in my country than some other countries), but I didn't think they would actually be that vivid and often. I have been one who has truggled with not wanting to sleep many nights due to nightmares, and it really started affecting every part of me, the same way it did for Lloyd and then a bit extra. The way the visions are essentially nightmares and intrusive thoughts joined together, meaning he is never getting peace from them, was the most relatable thing. At some point my nightmares would creep into my regular thought process, turning it into intrusive thoughts in the end, creeping up when you least expect it and at the worst times possible.
I love when shows, espeically kid shows, delve a bit into more serious themes, even if it's just for a small moment. This wasn't just a small moment, however, this was a big part of of season 2 part 1. I hope this is something they will keep up, finding a realistic way for Lloyd to learn how to deal with the issues and come to terms with them, instead of being like "Well, it seems to have sorted itself out!". I liked the fact that he was more open to listen to his visions, proving that he can learn to make peace with the situation. He was starting to realize that the visons weren't set in stone, meaning he still had some control of the situation. He was just too anxious, letting the first thing he saw in his vision get to him. It's so well written of his character, and I hope the writers know how much they nailed it.
Lloyd is a high ranked character for me, for many reasons, but Dragons Rising has finally given me the thing I have craved for so many season; Giving him the role of teacher, while showing he is still a human with struggles. This show is my favorite, of all time. While it has it's many flaws, it also has an abundance of great themes and story telling. The way that I have grown up with the show since the beginning and still watch it into my early twenties really says something. The way they have given more realistic struggles to one of the most popular character, proves that the writers care about this show as much as we do, knowing that so many poeple out there will see more of themselves in the characters they cherish. I cannot wait to see what the other half of the season, and whatever may come beyond that, brings.

Ninjago is at its best when it tackles more mature themes and tries to be serious, that's the biggest issue with the 11 minute era, they thought "kids show" meant it should be extremely shallow, basic and full of childish jokes and constant action and that's just not true. I fell in love with Ninjago as a kid because of those deeper moments, I rolled my eyes at the immature parts the same way I do today, and that's the thing they need to understand, children like being treated maturely, they don't like being talked down to and challenging their minds is critical for their development. Just compare some episodes from season 1, one of the most unpopular episodes is Jay's true potentual, and it's goofy and immature, whereas one of the most popular episodes is Zane's true potentual, and it's more mature, emotional and dark. Obviously there are limits for what's appropriate for kids, but odds are that if you make something that's enjoyable for older audiances as well as kids, then those child fans will grow up and keep enjoying it. I know that LEGO has gotten a lot more money out of me as I got older than they did when I was a child.

As someone who has had a fairly flaky relationship with Ninjago pretty much since it's inception (it took me a long to stop viewing it as a cheap imitation of Bionicle) I would drop in and out of the show fairly frequently. I'd really only catch up with the show when my mate who was really into it wanted someone to discuss it with. That being said Dragons Rising is the most I have ever been invested in the show, it's crazy how much better written it is than any previous incarnation of the show, this is the first time I've truly been watching it for myself and not just due to sunk cost fallacy. The characters feel so much more real and the writing actually feels like it respects them more than ever before and all the characters outside of maybe Nya have had some proper fleshing out done to them, though I suspect with Kai locked away and the potential of an evil Jay according to the new sets she may be put in the limelight of the second half of season 2.

(12:39) I agree that LEGO Ninjago doesn’t need dark themes to go deep! I actually prefer when stories go deep without going dark and think it shows an even higher level of talent from the writers.

DR Season 2 is definitely really good. Lloyd’s story specifically did not stick out as much to me since it appeared to be a little basic for me, but now, I see a lot more depth in it and hope that they continue to do more with it in Part 2.
Here is my full season opinion (so far) if anyone is interested:
Pros: +Arin and Wyldfyre both have great stories in here that made up for their smaller role (in comparison to Sora) in Season 1.
+Bonzle is getting more depth and she is my favourite finder now.
+Speaking of Bonzle, Zane and Cole have fantastic chemistry. The two are generally a great duo and I like it when they get their own subplots together and it is no different here.
+Gandalaria and Fedulian are pretty fun new side characters.
+The animation, lighting, voice acting and so on keeps getting better.
+The villain side of the season was really strong and I liked about everything regarding their story.
+”Beyond the Phantasm Cave” is a 10/10 episode and it alone already makes the season better.
    Mixed:
+/-They keep hinting at #Geode. Fortunately, the hints that this awful ship might be canon are not nearly as frequent as I thought it would be.
+/-We barely explored Mysterium, which is fine at the moment, but it is a little missed opportunity.
+/-The tournament arc they are setting up is in line with the newer seasons copying previous themes: Seabound was similar to Season 1, Crystalized to Season 2, DR S1 to Rebooted and now we have another tournament arc, like in ToE. This does not bother me very much, which is why it is not a con, but it worries me deeply.
    Cons:
    -Euphrasia still has no personality.
-Nokt was kinda underwhelming at the end.
-The whole training arc went on for WAY too long and Egalt is so whiny and annoying that it was very unpleasant to watch at times.
-Dorama has officially overstayed his welcome. I hope he does not return for a while.
    So yeah, that’s it.

Was not a fan of Lloyd's mental health issues in Season 2. Felt shoe-horned. He got the Obi-Wan Kenobi treatment from the Obi-Wan Kenobi show and the Luke Skywalker treatment in the sequels. Maybe I am being over-critical though. It's a cartoon meant for young audiences. I probably should be suspending my disbelief a little more.

    • @pjklockner5683
      @pjklockner5683 2 месяца назад +7

Lloyd’s visions are a new conflict that do not contradict anything that was established about his character before. Unlike Luke in the sequels, who acted in a way that does not fit to any of his traits and was written horribly through and through. So the two are not exactly comparable.
