Martin Armstrong M I think this is definitely the future of sailing, my only concern is that the twin sail drives are very exposed to damage or debris in the water. On a traditional single sail drive the keel offers some protection for the drive. In this case both drives are very exposed. Thanks but, This wasnt a sponsored video as we were in no obligation to film or make an episode from our visit. But, we figured its an adventure worth sharing, like all of our other adventures we shared.
Two things I would want, that Uma has is the head covering for the steering area, and a dodger, which would help during inclement weather and it getting into the hatch. Second I love that the inside of Uma has so much character, I don’t like all the bright, same particle board or wood on this new sail boat. I do have to say, I love the spacious bathroom, with a large shower. 🥰 That’s all I could suggest on a quick video tour. Thanks so much, it’s so amazing to see other electric sailboats. So glad you both are back!
This video genuinely had me smiling knowing that this is the future of sailing that I have to look forward to as someone who's goal is to do what you guys do. Huge props to you for taking this opportunity to showcase to us how cruising can be just as good as normal but also environmentally friendly :)
Not only that, they are already fit nautic interior acrhitects. I like what they did inside Uma very much. I wonder what a carte blanche for Kika nad Dan inside such a wast hull would bring. The boat in the video was clean, but generic and plasticky inside, maybe too much "charter style". I get it, a lot of yachts in Croatia are sold to be chartered and need to be set up in a manner to be easily and quickly cleaned, friendly to occasional sailors and children. But that brings a certain sterile flair to their interiors. I'd like to see how it would look if it were set up by sailors, who are also architects.
Little bit of a Salona commercial, but I'm not complaining. ;-) Great to see that developments like this one are appearing. Now do it with a raisable keel and you have not just a very good, but a fantastic boat.
@@dolvaran Shallow water. Bilge keels are good but not as efficient as a single fin. A swing/lift keel allows access to water that may only be 600mm deep, beaching upright and allows the keel to be lifted when down wind.

This is among the most awesome adventures I have watched... I enjoyed the less than perfect reality of LIFE itself, the enjoyment of sailing whether light or heavy winds... Great editing... I now want to visit Croatia... Solana and Green Yachts, you rock!
You guys are the best! In what is becoming a crowded yachty field your film making and scripting has risen to the very top. I spent two weeks in the Bahamas ten years ago on what was one of the earliest electric drive sailboats. It was 44' and only about 10,000#. I recall seeing 12.9 knots under all plain sail in conditions about like those in day 2 of your vid. Loved "sailing" away from anchorages with no sail hoisted and no wind. Loved watching our neighbors in the anchorage scratch their heads! The boat I was on had a large fixed three blade prop that was great on regen and for motorsailing. In variable winds we set the controller at a level where it produced just enough energy to provide a little drive in the lulls to maintain speed, and produce a little regen in the puffs. I get the twin engine arrangement. It will sell a lot of boats to modern sailors who never learned to dock properly just like those Beneteau Sense customers. I only see two downsides-- extra cost and vulnerability to drift and lobster pots. I take it that the Salona wasn't meant for Alaska floating logs.LOL My other comment applies to almost all "modern" sailboats. Do you really want to cross the North Atlantic while being thrown against those knife-edge corners in the galley and head? Especially since "interior desiccator" architects eliminate handholds to generate a cleaner and modern look. I have a large bone spur on one elbow courtesy of a 15' flight across the salon of a big Oyster on a late fall delivery to Bermuda.
Not always just a part! Sometimes a whole engine. Then time fitting in new motor mounts. Electric sounds great and self replenishing energy if you simply go sailing!
OMG you guys are such corndog's sometimes! lololol We have been so worried and checking everyday for your new posts and WE KNOW we need to join "The Uma Nation!!"! Soon we hope!. Yet, we were speculating on the fact that you two may be involved in something such as this!!! At least that is our prayers for you two! This presentation was/is, an incredible endorsement for both Salona and Green yachts; not to mention the very high level marketing ability of Dan and Kika. In my mind, electric boating power technology has been showcased in this video in a way that neither Salona nor Green yachts could have done alone. The two of you have a unique way of settling into any circumstance that confronts you, whilst enjoying yourselves at the same time. I foresee a newer, larger yacht in your future and can’t wait to follow the next chapter. ❤️.

Some clever engineer should start a company that can refit a prefab electric engine and battery system onto existing boats or sell the system as a DIY refit kit. They'd make a killing if they could keep the price low enough.
But swap diesel mechanic to electrician. Everything is fine till it stops working, a diesel is pretty simple compared to the amount of components in an electric drive system.
Pretty much all the components in an electric system, you already have in a diesel. Battery, cable, switch, electric motor (alternator/starter/water pump), just without the diesel and fuel tank/lines. The prop and saildrive are virtually the same. If you know how an alternator works, you already have all the knowledge you need to troubleshoot an electric set up.
@@skaraborgcraft Electric motors have about 3 moving parts (Apart from the prop drive), that should tell you a lot. Personally, I'm not what you'd call a tree hugger / militant person on all things green (I have a V8 powered race car) but: From my practical experience on the electric car I owned for 3 years and put 45,000 miles on here's the sum total maintenance: A set of tires. Period. I also have a 36 FT C&C with a diesel on it that I despise. Even though it's been pretty reliable: It's smoky, loud, and it vibrates. Outside from the unpleasant operation: It's but a pinhole in the fuel lines away from stopping or fouled water intake / failed water impeller away from overheating at any time. In a way: It's also made me a better sailor because I freakin' hate running it. :-)
@@francoisrivard893 I dont dispute some of the advantages, the re-generation is an absolute bonus. Its not so much the motors themselves, rather the components. A friend had trouble with speed controllers and other "shorts" after a few years in service, and fault finding can be a long task with some parts needing factory replacement rather than being servicable/fixable onboard. Im not anti, i did look at a hybrid system but the cost for that particular project doubled the cost of the propulsion system. Tech moves fast, I certainly would not dismiss it at some further point. I have a 40 year old Perkins diesel that is still an instant starter.
@@skaraborgcraft Maybe nowadays they take a cue from cars and have a diagnostic port and lots of sensors to tell you where any problem is. You could probably take systems designed for electric cars and put them right on a boat.
Finally, somebody who wants to produce the all electric alternative. Sail drive, photovoltaics, wind turbines, quite a few ways to generate power and store it. It's the electrical engineer in me with quite a bit of electric traction work under my belt that wants this for myself.
"The diesel engine can be a crutch that keeps people from being better sailors" well said. lots of people criticized me for converting my sailboat to electric but I always respond with "I'm a sailor, not a powerboater"

Salona Yachts not only innovates in sailing, but also in marketing! I have just watched a 36-minute commercial which I love and fully engage!!! You are the best!
It sure looks like a dream boat, clean an green (as far as nuclear plants are green), a boat that anyway I'll never be wealthy enough to acquire. Meanwhile I'll rely on my old diesel to get in and out of harbour. And for the time being I feel more confident as a diesel mechanic than as an electronic expert...

Laughed at the part about the LP switch. We had the exact thing happen on our Salona 41. The whole process of looking and eventual discovery were like watching ourselves 😂
So, further to my last comment, here’s a suggestion for another upload... price comparison between: A. self build from wreck ; B. green yachts off-the-peg? Surely you must be in negotiation to buy one yourself with some sort of sponsorship agreement tied in? Or do you just love Uma too as much, as I do?
Great video as always and the perfect couple to review this electric boat. I am sure the lower hull windows are very robust and well sealed but having them makes me nervous about being subjected to a long passage beating into bigger seas. Just my thoughts.

Why in the heck I haven’t even thought the idea of twin motor setup? 🤯 When you think about it, it’s just no-brainer! In bigger boat you need smaller motors and also it brings reliability! Definitely going to do my big boat like that!
I must have been half asleep.. now on my second viewing i have fallen in love with this Salona 460 electric motor powered Sailing yacht . Dan , Kika and Graham have produced an almost perfect sales pitch ..

Great video on this wonderful experience. Learned new info, heard new ideas about the future of boating. Enlightening.
Please, don't get me wrong, I like electric motors. But TBH, this phrase could work both ways. I could say "Sailors, not power harvesters". This phrase tries to imply that diesel engines are constantly broken, which is not true, and that electric motors will NEVER have problems, which is also not true. But that's how marketing works. :)
@@thomask5295 If you have a diesel motor you will 100% need to know exactly how it works in order to fix it while away from port. You'll need to do constant maintenance on it with oil filter changes, belt changes, rebuilds, polishing diesel etc etc. An electric motor is self contained and, aside from some basic care, is mostly a fit and forget part of the boat. Diesel is also noisy and smelly and pollutes. A diesel boat usually generates power by running the engine to use the alternator to charge the batteries (literally harvesting power from the engine). So even if you are sailing you would need to motor sail to recharge the engines or use solar or a wind generator. Electric drives will usually be paired with solar and sail drives that re-generate power by guess what...yep sailing. So the phrase I'm a sailor not a power harvester doesn't make sense given that the very act of sailing is what is recharging your electric motor batteries. The only method of powering a boat that actively requires you to harvest power by not sailing is diesel.
@@ThePenhalionsPost While I do agree with you that an electric motor is pretty much maintenance-free, the same can't be said from the rest of the system. In order to work, an electric motor needs controllers, converters, chargers, batteries, etc., and those are delicate and not self-contained units. A Diesel engine I can fix with pretty much a wrench and a few basic tools and basic knowledge, while a converter needs much more sophisticated tools to fix and also a much more specific range of knowledge to do so. Besides, modern diesel engines, like EURO 6 Norm, as long as well maintained, pollute far less than ppl make it out to be. As for the harvesting part, yes I love to sail, but I like to sail because I WANT to sail and WHEN I want to sail, not just because I NEED to sail NOW or my batteries will dry out. Solar and wind can be applied to both propulsion methods, so if you are going to say you don't need to sail, I'm telling you that I don't need to run my diesel engine as well. :p Please, don't get me wrong. I don't have anything against electric boats. I think it's a great idea and would love to have one. What bothers me is that ppl try to picture diesel as hell and electric as heaven. IMHO It's not quite like that. Every coin has two sides. :)
@@thomask5295 Lithium ion batteries don't dry out. They are completely maintenance free requiring perhaps balancing that a suitable charger should automatically provide and checking that the cables haven't become loose. Controllers on the other hand are the equivalent of chart plotters and other electronics on board. If these systems are properly shielded and grounded, which more feasible for them to be than most other electronics, you have a turnkey perpetual system, I would think. Note, lithium batteries currently do have a lifespan of ten years or so though.
@@thomask5295 Um the converters are needed for any power system whether it it diesel or solar charged or both. What do you think the charge from the diesel engine alternator goes through. I'm puzzled as to how you think a system with electric motors and solar, wind and sail drive regen is more complex than a system that replaces the electric engines with a diesel one. The diesel motor is significantly more complex and costly to maintain. If you have a chance look at an anchor electric motor. The propulsion drives are slightly more complex than that and only due to needing to drive the propeller shaft. I think you've got a huge misconception of the complexity of electric vs diesel.
Wow, electric sailboats and other green technology are so exciting. Thank you for sharing all the information and help to raise awareness of what is possible.

The price of the boat would be peanuts compared to the return they would have only by having their boat featured on one of the most loved Sailing channels around here.
All the Best.
Quality marketing ! With Dan and Kika who obviously embrace this technology !
The perfect sponsored RUclips video advertisement. Hats off to Solana and the UMA team, Kika and Dan for an excellent blend of audio, video, humor, education and sights!!
Thanks but, This wasnt a sponsored video as we were in no obligation to film or make an episode from our visit. But, we figured its an adventure worth sharing, like all of our other adventures we shared.
OK, Quite simply, that was GOOD episode. I learned things and smiled a lot.
If you haven't seen them from the start my I highly suggest you do. They are such fun to watch.
Better than Netflix. Love you guys.
What a coincidence. This is exactly what I was hoping you both would do. Your experience qualifies you as top level evaluators for Sailboat Mfgrs. 👍
I’ve been thinking the same thing. Kudos to Salona for being the first!
Im also glad they are getting new opportunities.
With twin rudders just behind the drives.
Have to ask why you would want a lifting keel on a beauty like that?
i saw an aquaholic video for a very similar looking boat (stairs were identical, I think its the same company) and that boat had it as an option
@@dolvaran Shallow water. Bilge keels are good but not as efficient as a single fin. A swing/lift keel allows access to water that may only be 600mm deep, beaching upright and allows the keel to be lifted when down wind.
That was one fantastic video!!!! Thanks for taking us along. Now, I have to rush out and buy a lottery ticket so I can get in line for a S460 Salona.
The most enjoyable and useful ad I have ever seen in my entire life
You could have edited the tying the "bowline" part out but did not. One of the reasons I love you guys!
The milla second I saw her stand in front of that bed I knew, KNEW she was going to get in to the storage🤦🏾♀️😂
In a time where everybody films their struggle with the virus constraints you two manage to solve that the wizard way. The information in the film is clear. The message is clear. The film composition is a jewel!
This is among the most awesome adventures I have watched... I enjoyed the less than perfect reality of LIFE itself, the enjoyment of sailing whether light or heavy winds... Great editing... I now want to visit Croatia... Solana and Green Yachts, you rock!
As a nativ Croatian I can say come in the summer it is a sailing paradise. Just wach out for Bura winds.
I take it that the Salona wasn't meant for Alaska floating logs.LOL
My other comment applies to almost all "modern" sailboats.
This video should be dedicated to the thousands of boaters stranded in harbours waiting for their engine part to come in.
Until your VR, freq drive/inverter, rectifier, batteries, or other let the smoke out..
Electric is still better but everything breaks
Not always just a part! Sometimes a whole engine. Then time fitting in new motor mounts. Electric sounds great and self replenishing energy if you simply go sailing!
OMG you guys are such corndog's sometimes! lololol We have been so worried and checking everyday for your new posts and WE KNOW we need to join "The Uma Nation!!"! Soon we hope!. Yet, we were speculating on the fact that you two may be involved in something such as this!!! At least that is our prayers for you two! Epic what you have done and just, we always prayed for you both to be recognized for the desigers and engineers you are!!! So lovely to see your shining faces!
Its almost depressing when I don't get my daily dose of 'Sailing Uma'.
Intelligent move by Solana and Green Yachts both to build the boat and to ask Dan and Nika to review it. Smart marketing people.
*Salona* (like the salon with the massive table), not Solar (notice no panels).
*Dan and *Kika*.
Kika...
@@andybute Oops. My bad. Typo. Thanks for the point of order.
I was about to call the Coast Guard when Uma was missing for 4 weeks. Great to see you guys are safe and you made another awesome video. The Salona test sail was really well done and the twin electric motors must be the future for all sailboats.
With the Regen capability there could be a screen that displays the number of gallons / cost were you using diesel fuel?
I've been watching several of these sailing channel and you guys are by far crushing the competition, it's not even close. This is a boat I'd buy...if I had the moolah. The company should have you guys design an "Uma Edition" in their fleet. It would be interesting to see what you guys came up with. This video production is top-grade. I'll be watching this one all weekend. The thought of having a boat that you never have to buy fuel for is amazing.
I've been checking Patreon every day hoping for a new upload, my dog woke me up at 6am and the first thing I thought of was UMA, and there she was 😉
So now I'm awake.... and a great watch it was!.... Next please

We agree! Dan and Kika are both so nice and so dedicated to being advocates for electric sailing. Check out this blog we wrote about them: greenyachtsales.com/behind-the-scenes-with-sailing-uma/
True. Demn true. But I would like them sailing this company boat for 6 months or more. (For for free of course).
Cant wait to see the all electric boat community grow and the technology develop even more every year!
Kika is just the best looking captain on RUclips!
Enjoyed every second of this very nicely put-together clip.
I love you guys. You've inspired me to get my own salvage and sail for myself. I'm very excited. Also! Watching Kikas hair grow has been a wonderful journey alll on its own lol 😊
I have been looking at buying for a little while, this boat just jumped to one of my top 3 that I am interested in. No change that #1.

Hey!.. I miss you guys
Continuing to be kids at heart, I loved the V-Berth scene, Kika lays in storage and Dan sits on the bed and laughs! You two are awesome, and your shots are always stunning!
Well Kika and Dan loved your magic show, i have been going through with drawl pains big time hoping that you guys would return to us asap. The video was top of the line with really good people and a wonderful sail boat as well. I have been really impressed with the Croatian people and how smart they are and concerned with the state of how we need to keep the oceans clean. When they approached you two i knew they were genius level folks and have super smart business thoughts as well. I am so so so glad you guys made this video i felt like i lost two of my children during this lapse in video content, Thanks so much, catch you on the next video CHEERS !!!!!!
Now that the boat of perfection has been created, the values of all other boats will plummet!
Some clever engineer should start a company that can refit a prefab electric engine and battery system onto existing boats or sell the system as a DIY refit kit. They'd make a killing if they could keep the price low enough.
@@jaredlind2888 Tesla is probably holding a beer
They're such beautiful humans.
PS: You even gave Salona Yachts their new tag line, "Spend more time sailing and less time being a diesel mechanic".
Welcome back Sailing UMA, great video as always and the electric boat is the way I’m going in 7 years.
"The diesel engine can be a crutch that keeps people from being better sailors" well said. lots of people criticized me for converting my sailboat to electric but I always respond with "I'm a sailor, not a powerboater"
Add cameras and a WiFi router and app and you can become an overseas RC-yachting enthusiast in the comfort of your cabin! ;-) ;-)
Seems like diesel would get expensive. How much is the average sailor spending in diesel each month?
@@GodsItalianStallion not very much, if you just use it for maneuvering in and out of harbors and go easy on the throttle, one tank can easily last a whole sailing season
@@GodsItalianStallion not much if you use your sails. I use my motor to get out of the harbor. But I'm interested in changing out my diesel engine for a elect one
You guys “take my breath away!” Videography was spot on. I swear I was on this sail with you. Felt every wave.
Thanks Green Yachts for producing such an incredible sail boat. If only I had the money.......

Great to see you guys in my homesea :-) Adriatic. I hope you will return with Uma...
Uma is the perfect electric sail yacht
What a beautiful yatch.
The best demo video for a yatch I've seen. Brilliant job 👍
It's a sleek boat with more entertaining and weekend harbor anchoring chops, but yours just looks so much more homey and cozy.
Salona have the enviable reputation of quality construction .Plus leading edge technology at affordable prices .. I believe that having a young couple sail and demonstrate the Salona electric yacht would be the best advertisement any company could be blessed with .
Infomercials are not exactly my cup of tea, but you certainly did a wonderful job in its production.
There's a fine line between advertorial/informerical and showing new uses of technology and how they're implemented. I think this straddled the line pretty well without being super salesy.
I would like to see Dan & Kika let loose on the boats interior! As it is it has no character at all!

We love Sailing Uma's leadership in being advocates for electric sailing. We also love their incredible interior design. We know a few manufacturers who might be interested in advancing interior boat design. If you wouldn't mind, send an email to me at graham (at) greenyachtsales.com and I'll suggest a few folks to contact and advocate a Sailing Uma approach to boat interiors.
I see Dan stopped Looking over his shoulder on his backflips. He’ll become a proper gymnast yet!
Salona Yachts not only innovates in sailing, but also in marketing! I have just watched a 36-minute commercial which I love and fully engage!!! You are the best!
Both my wife and I truly enjoyed this video. Thanks for sharing it make my week!!
As a professional diesel mechanic, i cant wait to sail an electric boat.
Same here electric makes more sense
Just don’t do gas if you do then your poluting the air
It sure looks like a dream boat, clean an green (as far as nuclear plants are green), a boat that anyway I'll never be wealthy enough to acquire. Meanwhile I'll rely on my old diesel to get in and out of harbour.
And for the time being I feel more confident as a diesel mechanic than as an electronic expert...
Being a Tesla owner, I love the idea of electric motors on sailboats. I would love to see you show a catamaran with electric motors also. You two are awesome 😎
Tesla owners are like Vegans, how do you know they are Tesla owners? Don't worry, they'll tell you.
Sorry, it was just too easy.
And pilots!

I have installed these oceanvolt motors on a open 60....after many issues had been resolved it was overall working nice. Electric propulsion is the future of the sailing nation. Cheers from Germany, keep on sailing
Laughed at the part about the LP switch. We had the exact thing happen on our Salona 41. The whole process of looking and eventual discovery were like watching ourselves 😂
Fabulous video you guys...... heading to their website, now to have a look
So, further to my last comment, here’s a suggestion for another upload...
price comparison between:
A. self build from wreck ;
B. green yachts off-the-peg?
Surely you must be in negotiation to buy one yourself with some sort of sponsorship agreement tied in? Or do you just love Uma too as much, as I do?
Great video as always and the perfect couple to review this electric boat. I am sure the lower hull windows are very robust and well sealed but having them makes me nervous about being subjected to a long passage beating into bigger seas. Just my thoughts.
Thank you so much for taking me to the sea, beautiful Croatian seaside, which I hadn't had the chance to see last year. I am very happy that boats are now becoming more ecofriendly and I profoundly enjoyed your video. I love Uma and what you did to her too. I am sending you a lot of love from Novi Sad and all the success for SalonaYachts :)
Sailing. Uma is such an easy video /series to watch, makes me want to be on a boat again, and younger!
Oh, how I have missed you. Hope you enjoyed your break :)
Why in the heck I haven’t even thought the idea of twin motor setup? 🤯
When you think about it, it’s just no-brainer! In bigger boat you need smaller motors and also it brings reliability!
Definitely going to do my big boat like that!
Great Video Dan and Kika. Looks like they need to provide one of those boats to Sailing Uma so you can make improvements to their boats.
I must have been half asleep.. now on my second viewing i have fallen in love with this Salona 460 electric motor powered Sailing yacht . Dan , Kika and Graham have produced an almost perfect sales pitch ..
How nice is it to have people watching what you do and listening to why you do it and then invite you to come play with their new baby so they can get positive feed back on the good and not so to help them make a better boat.
Great video on this wonderful experience. Learned new info, heard new ideas about the future of boating. Enlightening.
Sailors not diesel mechanics! That is the best catch phrase for electric sailing ever. Well done!
Please, don't get me wrong.
More than anything, the reason why Sailing Uma did this video is to be advocates for the electric revolution. We are so grateful that they help folks know that electric sailing is possible and any of us who sail can go electric.
First - Kika makes me happy! Second - I spent decades in TV direct marketing. There is no way in hell a 30 minute professionaly produced infomercial THIS EFFECTIVE would be produced for less than $500,000. Seven figures would be more likely.
