early comedy was so stand up.. and accepted..it was new then.. things have changed.. but these guys were funny..never swore.. or had to get women to strip off..all digs and humour.. at the height of there career 10 mill views..as good as the two ronnies

At the height of their career they got significantly MORE than ten million viewers. Their 1978 Christmas special was watched by 28 million viewers. 28 millions! And this was in the 70s....amazing.

This was not called "stand-up".....and has little relation to stand-up.
It was "variety" and we will never see its like again.

Half the British population sat down and watched their 1977 Christmas Day Special. A darned sight more than 10 million viewers. And they are completely different from The Two Ronnies. A comparison is pointless.

Wrong. At their height, Christmas Day 1977, 28.75 million viewers. And a million times funnier than The Two Ronnies.

I know. We tried to recreate this sketch at our local amateur dramatic society and five minutes into it the police raided us, beat us up, impounded our microphones and forced the women into burqas, and told us we could only do comedy based on mocking conservative politicians and poor old Reg, our 90 year old director, was forced to become transexual to hit the mandatory quota that is now legally imposed on all productions.
You couldn't make it up. Except that you can, clearly.
Our next performance is a little known work of Shakespeare "The Paranoid Arsehole of Venice and his Persecution Complex"

I always wondered why my grandparents didn't like M & W. As a boy I saw them in the 1970s and I thought they were brilliant. But from these 1960s clips I am not impressed. Maybe that was when they got their opinion of them? That all said, I am pleased to see their work from back then and how their act changed over the years.
