- The prominent scholar and activist Cornel West has announced he is leaving Harvard Divinity School after he was denied consideration for tenure, and will rejoin the faculty of Union Theological Seminary in New York City, where he started his teaching career more than 40 years ago. West had left Harvard once before in 2002 and returned to a nontenured position at Harvard in 2017. The news about the denial of West's request for tenure has led to an outpouring of support and incited conversation about diversity in academia. "There's too much Harvard dishonesty, too much Harvard hypocrisy, in terms of mistreating too many Black folk at high levels," says West, who suggests his political activism and vocal support of Palestinian rights likely played a part in Harvard's decision. "The most taboo issue on U.S. campuses these days, in many instances, has to do with the vicious Israeli occupation of precious Palestinians." West also discusses Joe Biden's first 50 days as president and says that while there is some good news on domestic policy, he's "not too encouraged" on Biden's foreign policy.

Harvard has lost a great teacher by letting Professor West go. What a shame.
They didn't require that he leave, he's going of his own accord since they won't grant him a tenured position. They're happy to have tokens but won't give someone like him an indefinite position and the prestige, power and privilege that comes with it. But while "prestige" means widespread respect, it's roots are in a word for trickery and illusion. He's too real for them, and they're the ones only interested in their "prestige", the false image.
Dr./Prof. West remains prevalent in his own right.
In essence an individual of his stature is way too good for an institution such is that founded on all that he himself defined in this interview. He made his presence known there and now it's time he move on.

Harvard and the USA are moving generally away from diverse criticality of thought and towards a more simple authoritarian "ownership society" capitalist ideology centered status quo - and have been for over a half a Neo-Liberal century. It's been through the corporate press, and regular universities, just getting to the ivory towers now. Towers among the last holdouts. This kind of thing can't surprise too much in a nation run by two capitalist parties before, and unchallenged after the McCarthy Red Scare Purge Terror.

Mr. West is one of my favorite professors. I saw the world as it was as a child, and quit school after 8th grade to self educate using the internet, and never stopped. Now at 41, I see people suffering in the traps they walked into and I still try, always, to show them the trap. I can't believe what they do sometimes, but when you've been told all your life that success means money, then I suppose, sure. But NOBODY could ever twist MY perceptions enough to convince me that an expanding species converting livable biosphere to waste is somehow success, instead of living simply and using your energies to EXPAND livable biosphere as we expand. Failure as a species does not equal individual success. Every time somebody throws something into a landfill and buys a new thing, someone makes money, and resources are wasted. You can measure who has contributed the most to our failure by who has the most money.

Well, if Harvard won't give tenure to Dr. West then that's their loss because Dr. West has all the credibility in the world and Harvard not so much. There's an ignoble track record here with Harvard regarding to the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. Remember how Harvard professor Alan Dershowitz stymied the tenure of Normal Finkelstein at the University of DePaul for the latter's criticism of Israel and the position of Dershowitz on the matter.
Uhhh I wouldn’t say Harvard has no credibility, regardless if they currently deserve it or not, but they certainly have credibility atleast in the eyes of most and importantly people in high places. (Because many of them went there)

Dr. West's experience isn't irrelevant by any means, but his resignation probably won't make any impact on them since the ones in charge at Harvard seem to think him of being no consequence to them. When I read credibility, my first thought is and was credibility in the eyes of other Universities, Businesses, Government, etc, obviously *WE* all know what they did was pretty vile from what little I've read into it so far, but unfortunately I don't think Harvard Administration cares much as long as most people don't know about this and still see them as 'THE top University' and will continue to act as they have been; foolish and arrogant.
I certainly don't support any kind of Oligarchical regime, we all know that never leads to anything good if no one else is able to keep them in check/replace them if they're failing in their duties, which they seem to be doing alot of lately.

Thus, the university has lost confidence among its membership and moving forward the question is where will this lead if a similar situation should befall the institution again?
Furthermore, these universities actively compete for the best and most marketable talent in the academic pool available. Therefore, when these institutions ignore growing public sentiment against Israel's hegemonic policies that deny Palestinians their homeland and their basic human rights, and consequently, likeminded universities like Harvard begin to loose such talent like Dr. West, how long will it be before the supporters of these institutions begin to loose confidence in them as well. These instituions are, at the very least, myopic in their positions. I do agree with your sentiment that they, at least for the time being, don't appear to give due consideration to what's at stake here.
@@jameschant2740 Oh ofcourse, it will take time for things to change and him resigning may be the catalyst for change hopefully in the right direction. To be totally honest, I don't know much about the whole Israel thing I've never really done alot of research into some things people take issue with, so I won't comment on that, but in any situation, you do need someone or some people to start bringing attention to it like Dr. West did and he most certainly did the right thing for how he feels about it.

A black professor that ostensibly( and here I am presuming) feels at home at Harvard under these questionable practices- I would like to hear from. I felt and still feel that it is a legitimate question. The silence around this issue is of interest. Don’t assume that I think that Henry Louis Gates Jr. would or should support Dr. West. I went to Palestine and Israel in 2015 as USW Craft Union Delegate with the First Congregational Church of Old Lime, Connecticut. I promised to bear witness to what I observed there, and once you get settled, Dr. West, I am happy to make a presentation at your new academic home.
This is a HUGE black mark on Harvard's history. They will never live this down. Cornel West is one of the brightest lights in the universe. The contrast between his moral clarity and Harvard's depravity is striking. Many of us will always look up to Dr. West as one of our intellectual and moral guides.

I have unbounded respect for Reverend Dr. Cornell West, professor at Harvard, Yale, and Princeton for decades, author of many books, and a renowned thinker, worldwide. Harvard Univ. is making a mistake that will be talked about for years to come, it is embarrassing itself on the world stage, and tarnishing its reputation. What strikes me in this interview is they have also really hurt Rev. Dr. West's feelings, and I am heartbroken by this. He walks his talk, he is a former child prodigy, he is a genius, a very respected scholar, obviously, a mover and shaker, all for what? Social Justice in all its facets, all of his life devoted to uplifting the downtrodden. He does not deserve this, I am insulted by Harvard's behavior frankly, on his behalf.

The elimination of meaningful dissent from meaningful platforms of national expression. The highest ivory towers are the last to feel the inquisition. Slight bit of Trivia, I watched the Matrix 2 & 3 and Cornell is in them. When I first saw (and indeed last saw) the films I was still a teenager in the UK and had not a clue he was anyone of note. Then 2008 happened and everything has been falling apart ever since and in my efforts from then unto now to understand why I unknowingly rediscovered Dr West and have enjoyed his insights for a decade and so the other day I was surprised to suddenly spot him in the Matrix as a council member where 20 years ago he passed my eyes unremarked. Funny how time changes perspective.
