These blocks are why I watch your channel. You share your thinking and honestly describe how you feel about each block. I am inspired to gather up a bunch of fabric pieces and put some blocks together. I hope mine come out as interesting as yours.
So great. This is exactly how I quilt. I’m not a pattern person. So nice to see someone use scraps in this way. LOVE the randomness, creativity, and that it didn’t have to be perfect. Can’t wait to see part too!
I’m delighted this video showed up in my feed! I’m a born and raised New Englander who has quilted for 30+ years. My maternal grandmother was a quilter then it skipped a generation. Your adventure today immediately brought me back to Grandma Knowles. The look and feel of what these blocks is that of vintage, bold and deliciously exciting. This is how I remember many of my grandmothers quilts. Yes, there were many of the nine patch etc ones too. But my love was always with her scrap quilts. You touched upon what I have learned over many years. As I was making a quilt, I gradually stopped ‘thinking’ “Does this look good?”. And began a wonderful journey to always asking myself….. “Does this make me happy?” You did a great video documenting this process and maybe some day we’ll see the the end results. And Yes, I sure hit the Like and Subscribe buttons. Warm wishes from Maine. Tongue in cheek as it was -12 degrees out this morning when I went to give my horse her early hay before feeding her grain.
I love your RUclips name! Your comment was so heartwarming. I have family in South Portland Maine. I love Maine even in the winter. Welcome to the channel!
Your improv. blocks are really good. Thanks for sharing how you put them together. The slightly off center adds alot of interest to your X block. I think it's wonderful how we are getting away from following traditional quilt patterns while still using traditional blocks. After all..some of the most interesting vintage quilts are made by the Gees Bend Ladies and their points and angles don't always match. What makes them so attractive are the colors, shapes and creativity. Thats what I appreciate about your video today!! I really love your unusual color combinations
This is exactly what I needed. I do have some leftovers about the same size as you’ve shown here, but I wasn’t sure what to do with ‘em. These blocks can be built into a full size quilt eventually? thank you for the idea 😊
Yes, they can definitely be built into a full side quilt. Once I have a bunch of blocks of random size I start putting them together, sometimes adding in strips to fill empty spaces and make them all fit. Thanks for watching!
Improv is not something I’ve done before but I love how you put these blocks together. Very experimental. I really want to try this now. Thanks for the inspiration!
Love your Scrappy quilt blocks! I would never think of putting something like that together cuz my mind just doesn't work that way and I'm so jealous of how you can put those blocks together and have them come out so cute
Hi, Mostly Quilts I echo jayanthi Rao words also, your scrap quilt blocks came out so cute, you're sure are great in making flying geese's. I have so many scraps I mean a lot I have a basket full you are so creative keep up the good work, the more you practice the better you get, great job. give yourself a pat on the back for awesome quilt blocks I love making quilt blocks, I have a designing wall where I hang them up :)
love your ideas, I spent 3 hours trying to make 13 x 19 rectangle and it is all squares. Not happy with it! Didn't even think to cut pieces in different shapes, I am a beginner with this so am now anxious with your ideas to start playing
Your original blocks were sweet but i like what you did in the end!! Me, I'm too lazy lol and would have just used those blocks. ha ha but this is why i don't have an inspiring youtube channel and you do!!!
🤣I love how uninhibited you are in the way you put random pieces together and come out with such a pleasing look. My friend is always telling me not to be so particular and she is right!
I love your choice of fabrics that you have scraps from. Are you an interior decorator, the reason I ask is the richness of your fabrics. Where do you typically buy your fabrics?
Thanks Trina. I’m not a decorator. I try to but my fabrics from local quilt shops but sometimes I hit Joanne’s but that’s not my preference. Thanks for watching!
I love the last 2. I am making pot holders and hot pads from my orphan blocks right now to give as gifts. Putting 6 together for a large hot pad for casserole dishes. You know I watch Lori Holt and she cuts her scraps into 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 inch blocks as she is making her quilts from her scraps and puts them in the cups of a muffin tin. As she is sewing the next quilt as she is sewing seams together instead if just ending a seam she will reach in the muffin tin and pull out , say 2 -3 inch blocks and sew them together then end the seam and so forth. by the time the quilt is finished she has a huge stack of little blocks already sewn. Smart isn't it?
Hi Shelia! It’s a mix of fabric that I’ve gotten in a variety of places. I’m embarrassed to say that I don’t even know one of the brands and since these are just little bits I don’t have the selvage. I do know that the brown with white fancy print is a French General from the local quilt shop.
I would never in a million yrs put some of those fabrics together. They look great.
Thanks Ingrid! Happy quilting to you!
I love the fabrics! What a fun exercise.
Your vid gave me the drive to make blocks from my scraps. Thanks for helping me get out of the doldrums.
That makes me so happy Liz! Hope you’re having fun.
I just loved watching you do this.
You are a clever magician! Glad I found your channel. Thanks
I’m glad you found my channel too Brenda!!! Welcome!
These blocks are why I watch your channel. You share your thinking and honestly describe how you feel about each block. I am inspired to gather up a bunch of fabric pieces and put some blocks together. I hope mine come out as interesting as yours.
Yours will be even better!
I SO love your thinking on these blocks. I'm primarily a Scrap Quilter.. So lots of my quilts start exactly like this..
So great. This is exactly how I quilt. I’m not a pattern person. So nice to see someone use scraps in this way. LOVE the randomness, creativity, and that it didn’t have to be perfect. Can’t wait to see part too!
Thanks Alison! Lots of fun!
Some of the most visually interesting and satisfying blocks I have seen. They remind me of woodcut images for some reason.
Thanks so much, that’s such an awesome compliment!
This is so fresh and awesome!
I really appreciate that Maryanne!
It's awfully fun to play & see your process!
I LOVE wonky and different!!!!
Me too!!!!!
I love watching your thought process. Thanks so much for sharing.

Wow! The way you have perfectly lined up all the stripes in that first block and the block with the pink/black stripes is amazing!

Unique. Good use of scraps.
Chris Hunt UK This is 'improv' at its best - thank you for the clever ideas you have produced. can't wait to drag my scrap box out!

@@mostlyquilts1386 Thank you so much. I just love the quilting community and wishing you a wonderful quilt journey.
I love these! Using up scraps creatively-isn't that what patchwork was originally about?
Yes! I think it’s what it’s all about!
Again, fun to watch and see the variations you came up with. My favorites are the two flying geese blocks. See you next time!
Thanks for watching Mary Jo! The flying Geese blocks were a bit out there but fun for sure!

great scrappy stars
This is very educational to a new scrappy quilter. Thank you.
Welcome to the wonderful world of scraps Geraldine! P.s. I really love your name.

Good idea I'm just around to watch this.

Thanks Linda! It was really fun. Doesn’t always work out but sometimes it does!
You will probably end up with yet another quilt smaller but a quilt none the less. Very nice love the fabrics.
For sure another quilt out of the left overs. Thanks for watching!
Delightful:)

Thanks for watching Ada! I am deeply jealous of your design wall. I just spread my block out on the dirty floor, haha.
Love your videos
love your ideas, I spent 3 hours trying to make 13 x 19 rectangle and it is all squares. Not happy with it! Didn't even think to cut pieces in different shapes, I am a beginner with this so am now anxious with your ideas to start playing
I bet it looks awesome! Do whatever quilt making methods make you the most happy, even if it’s not using scraps. Good luck!
the x looks fine,,,,you can tell it is hand made instead of by machine.
Awesome. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Jacque!
Your original blocks were sweet but i like what you did in the end!! Me, I'm too lazy lol and would have just used those blocks. ha ha but this is why i don't have an inspiring youtube channel and you do!!!
I bet you’d make some awesome RUclips videos! Thanks for watching.
🤣I love how uninhibited you are in the way you put random pieces together and come out with such a pleasing look. My friend is always telling me not to be so particular and she is right!
Thanks Sharlynne! Maybe being particular in your case works for you. I love how everyone’s approach to quilt making is a little different.
Love it, thank you!
Thanks Liz!
I like this. Don't care for all the blocks (like you), but all the ideas are great.
Thanks for watching Kathy! Ya, the process is fun and some were more successful than others.
I love the last 2. I am making pot holders and hot pads from my orphan blocks right now to give as gifts. Putting 6 together for a large hot pad for casserole dishes. I watch Lori Holt too, she’s a kindred spirit for sure. I love how each quilter organizes their scraps in such specific ways! Thanks for watching.
What brand fabrics are you using on these blocks.
Hi Shelia! It’s a mix of fabric that I’ve gotten in a variety of places. I’m embarrassed to say that I don’t even know one of the brands and since these are just little bits I don’t have the selvage. I do know that the brown with white fancy print is a French General from the local quilt shop.
That was great improv. All those left over strips are begging to be a log cabin.
You are so right about the strips! I think I’ll do that.
I would like to do the Scottish flag with the x in the middle!!
That’s an awesome idea!
Maybe a mug rug
I DO LOVE a mug rug!
I would turn the last one 90degrees and have it stand on end.
That’s a great idea, thanks for watching!
HOw many videos are made by people who say "I've never done this before so lets make a video"
Probably lots.
🤓
😎
that piece of fabric looks tacky!! . I think is should be a solid color??
The way you phrased this is unnecessarily rude. Please help to keep this channel positive.
