It's really strange to see those tall palm trees along the drive into the Stanford campus, because my wife's grandfather, who was born in 1895, said that when he was a kid the trees were so short that they could pick the dates off of them. Hard to imagine now. He spent years when he was a teen exploring the hills behind the campus. When he was almost age 11 the San Francisco earthquake happened. His family lived above the livery stable on Alma across the El Camino. He remembered his bed dancing across the bedroom floor to the window, where he looked out just in time to see the stone pillars at the campus entrance collapse in a cloud of dust. How time changes our world.
