yes, but I take it costs a lot to be an MP-getting elected and running a campaign is not for free, its not easy on families who may not be living in Ottawa, and it's more often than not, a temp job-you never know how elections will go, and you can lose your job. Looking at all these factors, salary is decent compensation, but no where as good as say the salary of a sportperson who may have similar constraints.

    • @johncam8420

This is even more screwed up when you realize there are 338 MPs - excluding 4-5 leaders - there are 333-334 "yes men/women" in parliament. For leaders it kinda makes sense to travel 64 times a year (maybe to rally up your base, or travel around as a leader), but for an average joe MP? Hell nah. We are paying average joe MPs 200k+ a year, for literally doing nothing but just saying "yes" or "no" to what the leader says. These salaries need to be reduced, by atleast to half for average joe MPs and flights reduced to no more than 10 flights per year.

In my riding, the MP is actually out doing more than many other politicians. He out there fighting for us little guys and he actually shows up regularly at many community functions whether his party is elected or not. He goes to many anniversary parties and to all the nursing homes and not only at voting time. He takes phone calls at all hours and cares for the valley he represents. He attends all the question periods and he has the responibility of an area where many of the jobs have that has dried up. I don't begrudge what he gets paid because he honestly is doing his best for an area that most people overlook and don't care about. However, I will admit that most politians are overpaid and care more about the perks that their position can bring.Very few politicans left like him today but there are some.

They should be paid more for 2 reasons. The main one is to make them less suseptable on bribery and dirty money - same reason judges need to be paid well. Worth every penny. The second reason is to level the playing field, some mps come into the job working class, some parties represent poorer classes than others, to make the risk of running worth it for these mps they should all be paid well once elected; otherwise parliament will remain an exclusive playground for the rich hobbiest. Also, you seen the housing prices in Ottawa lately?

$180k/year, meanwhile Canadian men are making less than what they were making in 1980, oh and these are RAW numbers not adjusted for inflation. Adjusting for inflation the average man is making $17k in 1980 money, what was the average man making in 1980? $55k. Now some of this can be due to more women entering, but much of it can be attributed to inflation moreso.

  • @OdinOfficialEmcee

Average MP Salary should be the median Canadian income. PM should be capped at $100k, party leaders at $70k. They get free travel, but only with Air Canada, as it's funded by tax payers. I'm down to give them free housing in Ottawa so they can relocate at minimal cost - but in military style housing that any of our fine men and women in uniform are able to get. Their kids are only allowed to use public schools - show faith in the infrastructure and services you are in charge of! Their benefits? The government retirement, healthcare, and unemployment available to all Canadians. Fuck all this lavish B.S., cut them back and watch our national spending get cut by 15% - and watch how quick our public services get bolstered.

  • @codered9576

This is a big problem, these politicians are getting way overpaid on the backs of the average taxpayers. It should be an equalization of the average earners. So if the average person makes between 50 and 70,000 that's what these MP should be getting. Sometimes I wonder what do these people actually do rather than just collect money and charge the taxpayers for expenses. They talk and talk and it doesn't seem like anything gets done. We need less government, so many people are struggling meanwhile they are living well for nothing. It's all bulshit.

I'm more concerned with Public Sector Employee Wages. Glad to see the Ontario Government put a wage freeze on the public sector. In Ontario, Public Sector Wages cost taxpayers $41 billion in 2018. These employee's enjoy cushion jobs with year over year wage growth, nothing compared to the private sector. I mean, there are OPP officers in small towns across Ontario who are being paid 6 digit incomes or just under for sitting in their cruiser's and responding to domestic disturbances. Must be nice to know you can make over $90,000 as starting pay. What a joke.

Here's an idea: MP's should be volunteer with zero salary. Pay their living expenses etc and at the end of their run, Canadians vote on a scale of how well they served which would be directly proportional to the sliding scale on the ballot. That would be their retirement. Just a thought.

I disagree. Your employer help pay for your CPP, why not MP? Although, I think their pension should be part of the CPP frame works, so their pensions are tied to the same fund the rest of Canadians are tied to. This way, their pension is subjected to the same risk as any Canadian's pension.

    I still say politicians shouldn't get a penny more than what they allow as the BASIC welfare income. After all, they're the ones that think its enough to live on. And that way we'd accomplish at least two things, minimum;
    1) Better likelihood of getting people who AREN'T in it for the money, and
    2) Our national debt and expenses would be DRAMATICALLY reduced, allowing for more resources to actually be used for, and returned to, our own people and nation.
    Just for starters!

I dont think the issue is really with how much the elected officials get paid. Its a tough job and they're in the public eye. The issue is that the poverty line is so low and yet there are still people well below it. Lowering the income of elected officials isnt going to change that. Taxing the rich what they owe and setting up a basic universal income might be a start though.

Being a Politician is a high-power, important job. The position deserves a good salary, but why don't we have highly qualified people in those positions? Economists, Lawyers, MBA's, etc. with very strong resumes, and demonstrated work histories...
And, why don't they post their resumes when they are seeking election? Essentially, we are hiring them. I want the BEST candidates for those jobs. Good educations, and lots of work experience in their fields of expertise.

Stop paying your taxes...wait... you pay taxes on fuel. You pay taxes every time you buy something from a store. You pay taxes on your phone bill. LOL. You can never stop paying taxes. Welcome to Canada.

In my opinion I think a politicians salary should be the average salary of the people +15% +20k that way you know their not in it for the salary and they also have a incentive to get higher average incomes.

We should stop paying income taxes. No taxation without representation! #taxrevolt

It would be nice if Canadian satire could be a bit more critical and reflective rather than playing for cheap laughs. This is a good topic to discuss, but a housing allowance makes sense. They are expected to be in Ottawa regularly and also return to their ridings. They destroy their own arguments by making unreflective comments like that. MPs don't need to be paid more and we could cut their expenses, but they need housing allowance and to have staff. The whole point is to make sure that anyone (in theory) can run for office rather than only allowing the rich to hold these positions.
