It’s funny - in the piece I read, it said that in the fencing scene, Riker came to Picard to essentially say “I’m going to defeat you” as if he were gloating or something, but upon actually seeing it, it felt more like he was coming as a warning, that is “there’s a very real chance I might win, and I know neither of us wants that”

I've never seen this cut and I honestly wish that it had been left in it's entirety, there are some stunning scenes but the scene with Data giving Geordi the Holmes pipe and calling him irreplaceable actually made me tear up. That was an honestly beautiful scene. It shows so much that you do not need emotions to have connections about people, that sometimes a connection goes beyond the typical meaning and version of emotions.

Not in canon sources, but Memory Beta has a section on the second of its name, built to replace the destroyed one. So it's also a Miranda class, although by the time Picard served it had been modified as a destroyer instead of the purposes we see the first science ship.

I understand the thinking behind cutting some of these scenes/lines. That said, this episode is enhanced overall by the extra footage.
Thirteen minutes extra? It does make one wonder how much extra was filmed for the other episodes that ended up on the cutting room floor & how inclusion could've changed our view of those episodes, for better or worse.
The character you were commenting on in the Engineering Room scene would be Ensign Gomez. I cannot say anything more lest I venture into spoiler territory.

Ok; I didn't know this even existed in sufficiently edited form to be watchable.
Scenes with the Admiral: redundant to what the original episode already says. Scenes with Data and friends, they are good but don't bring a lot to the episode in itself. The bit in Ten Forward with Worf and Riker is absolute GOLD on the other hand.
I think it's Starfleet protocol that in the absence of dedicaded and specialized Law orientated personnel, the Captain can do the role of the Defendant's Lawyer while the First Officer can be the Prosecutor for the Plaintiff. That's why when Louvois lacks personnel, she asks Riker to prosecute as Picard came to Defend.
Last Riker/Data dialogue as the end seems longer that the official one...

If you like stuff like this there's an extended cut version of T2 that runs 15 minutes longer than what was in theaters. You could watch it with or without the deleted scenes spliced back in. It's not bad. You'll understand why most of the extras were removed, but it is worth at least one watch, even if it does completely ruin a suspenseful moment near the end.

What may happen by setting a gray area precedent? I'm a great believer in Slippery Slopes. That scene was in the TV cut. I've seen this episode many times. The content & ethics of this episode may hv bn worth a 2 part-er back in the day. Glad u guys dug this extended version out. Great stuff! Back to issues of ethics, morality & slippery slopes. My guess is they'll always be part of the human existence.

Starfleet is what would be termed a para-military organization in that it contains a rank structure and chain of command. Roddenberry based Starfleet on the US Coast Guard in that its primary mission is exploration, diplomacy, and rendering aid but in time of war it is folded into the country's (Federation's) military and performs defensive and offensive missions.

Actually 7358,Starfleet is based off the navy and the battle bridge is based on Navy air-craft carriers ( all carriers have a battle-bridges just in case the main bridge is destroyed. It's located inside a carrier )

Guinan ,like a lawyer, was leading Picard to make his own conclusions. In other words, she was leading him to the conclusion of slavery without explicitly, putting the idea in his head.

This is a good point. We also have to consider by the 24th century, in so far as Federation society is concerned, the notion or concept of slavery being somehow implemented is completely foreign.

imagine if picard did an "off button hypospray" on the doctor, as an example that we humans can also be "turned off"

A Vulcan “neck pinch”would be a closer example. But I, too, always wondered that.

You can't remember everything unless you've watched the episodes several times (continuous loop on the sci-fi channel) or have a photographic memory. The Daystorm Institute could be compared to Skynet, The episode is from 2nd season TOS and called The Ultimate Computer. Dr. Richard Daystrom has convinced Starfleet that his computer will revolutiionizs space travel by making starships fully automated (we will no longer have to risk human lives to discover what's out there). The Enterprise is the test subject in a wargames simulation against 4 other starships. The computer performs admirably in the first test and then flips out and starts attacking the other starships. Moral of the story if someone from the Daystrom Institute approaches you with "a great idea" - RUN!!!!
