For me, the biggest thing I’m no longer purchasing is backups. In the past, every time there was a makeup or skincare sale that involved products I liked, I’d stock up to avoid running out before the next sale. Unfortunately, sometimes my needs or tastes changed and then I’d be stuck with extras long past the return date. My policy now is that unless a product serves a completely new role in my routine, I need to use something up before getting something new of the same category (e.g., foundation).

I’m currently reading Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmer- something that she wrote that really jumped out at me just the other night was about the indigenous fishermen would simply stop fishing when their basket was full. I looked at my overflowing closet like 🤯!!! My “basket” is full! I have so many sweaters that they’re in two separate locations in my house! I don’t need to keep “harvesting” sweaters!
She also talks about the Honorable Harvest, which I absolutely will not do justice trying to explain. I feel like the guidelines of the Honorable Harvest can also really relate to this topic of overconsumption in today’s society.

I feel like one of my best rules is to not pay attention to freebies/ points; they are so obviously there to get you to buy more than you otherwise would and I end up being unable to focus on the actual things that I’m actually paying money for. I find it so much easier to shop (and end up shopping less and spending less) without freebies/ points that I’m kind of at the point of actively avoiding freebies/ points. I feel like I just end up worrying about whether or not I’m getting the best “deal”, like “I need to buy X product right now.” But what if Sephora has a point multiplier tomorrow or next week? I’m missing out! And then I can’t even enjoy the thing that I’m paying (probably a lot of) money for because I’m missing out on points…when points just get you more free samples, like??!! I feel like it’s even worse for people who feel like they have to “take advantage” of every freebie/ coupon/ point offer and then end up spending way more money than they otherwise would.

I definitely agree with minis for fragrance and makeup! Especially for someone like me who has only recently gotten into all of this, chances are good that even if I really like a foundation I'm trying, I'm going to really want to try a different one before I'm finished with that full size bottle...
Skincare products are a bit different though, I think. If I know I'm going to use all of a product, I prefer buying the value sizes whenever possible. There definitely have been some cases where I am eager to replace an item in my routine (such as a vitamin C serum) with a different item. Unlike with makeup or fragrance though, which are used a lot more sporadically, there's always an end in sight with my skincare products since I use them every single day. Most of the time, I have no problems with finishing what I have before getting a new one. Worst case scenario if I can't resist getting that new item is I switch from using it on my face to using it on my body.

Also, I had my last iPhone for 5 years, and my husband got me a new one for me this year when he was negotiating our bill. I’m the same with reusing the same decorations every year. The only time I buy a new decoration is if it’s something I don’t have. I’ve been reusing some of the same gift bags for at least 6 years. Do you ever feel you are bamboozling yourself in this capitalist game? No shade at all but what are we doing influencing each other to seasonally consume only to end up with half empties, or worse never used; items we once swore we “needed” and could never live with out. I think that’s in part why true unique forms of personal style are hard to come by. Therefore I really do appreciate more creators doing de-influencing videos to let the average consumer see more of the cons of a viral item. Also with more demystification of the industry and the mind games they play (like exploiting FOMO) I think people will shop more diligently. “Take all my money” mentality really doesn’t need to be a thing.

Same with the full sized perfumes! 🙋‍♀️ also, with other full sized products unless I’m SURE I will get through them, especially makeup and skincare. Also, I rarely buy ANYTHING unless it’s on sale or I have an online coupon or discount code. I almost never pay full price for things unless it’s an absolute necessity. I also love that 2nd hand clothing and thrifting is looked on favorably. There are many great finds at the thrift store! This year I am committed to “shopping my stash” when it comes to makeup and clothing and only purchasing what I absolutely need. I have even stopped my subscription boxes. I’m not buying as many back ups of makeup products or skincare products either. This was a great video! I agree with a lot of what you said. We also bring out the same Christmas decorations each year. Sometimes I will buy one or two new things but for the most part it’s the same decor year after year. Have a great rest of your week! Hugs! 💖💜

Love the way you think before you spend money. So refreshing. ❤I’m somewhat frugal, but I have my moments of spending a little more than I want to. It took me 6 months til I decided to buy a coach bag (on sale) and 2 yrs to splurge on an Apple watch (also on sale).I’m not cheap, just work hard for my money.. great video Kelly!!!

YESSSSSS! Another Radio Bombay convert! I tend to like DS&Durga scents, so picking up this one for a Scentbird month kind of felt like a no-brainer. I got nervous when I saw so much hate in the reviews but I'm glad I stuck with that pic because it is a hidden GEM.

Love this video and I have a similar philosophy about a lot of the items you mentioned.
One more point I've realized about perfume: sometimes I adore a scent, but would only use for special occassions. So it doesn't make sense to get a full sized bottle. A travel size or some samples / decants suffice for my use case. I have a moderate collection, but going forward would only purchase full sized bottles of scents I'd wear on the daily.
I also always look to repair items as a first resort instead of always looking to replace / repurchase. For example, repairing the heels on shoes that are otherwise in good condition.

First off, I want to say that your hair ALWAYS looks AMAZING! You are hair goals, Kelly!
I 100% do not wear the same fragrance everyday so I never buy full-size bottles. I love Scentbird because you can try so many fragrances...and those cases are so nice!
I wish drugstore makeup came in minis because even minis at Sephora/Ulta can be outside of my budget...
I use my tech products until they no longer work the way I need them...I get a new phone when my current phone battery stops holding a charge well or stops getting necessary updates. Same with my laptop and tablets. There is no need to spend $1000s to get the next new phone/laptop/tablet/tv/etc when the current works just fine.
I need to stop falling prey to buying backups! I'm trying to not purchase anything unless it's replacing a product I recently used up (or are close to using up) and no longer have that type of product!

I really think them through and I only buy things I know I will truly use up. I've had the same Christmas decor for 15 yrs. I may add a holiday item here or there, but then I try to also get rid of an item. Great Video!

I love Scentbird specifically because it lets me follow my rule that I have to finish an entire vial (and STILL be desperate to wear it!) before I can buy a larger size. Of all the vials I’ve gotten from them-and enjoyed!-the only one I’ve actually used up was Commodity Gold. And I found myself missing it! So I bought a one-ounce bottle (about the size of 4 Scentbird samples-it took me months and months to get through one!). I’m able to enjoy the rest on and off without having to spend a fortune on a regular size.

It's funny, but with your costumes one I have a counter. I am a cosplayer and love dressing up for events even outside of halloween. When choosing cosplays to do, I pick ones that can be disassembled and after the cosplay be used as part of my wardrobe. Dressing up as Dipper Pines made me discover the love for cargo shorts and for years my only baseball cap was the Dipper one. I wanted to assemble an Ariel town dress cosplay, got the skirt and the blouse and the vest (I already had the wig from being Scarlet Witch) and I've never had the chance to use it but all of the pieces have been used. Knowing that I love cardigans I kind of want to be Howl from Howl's moving castle just to I can make a cardigan version of his jacket because it is so beautiful and I already have the rest of the pieces so it would be easy

I so need to do the rule of 3 and also declutter what I don’t use/wear. I have put on some menopausal weight and keeping things that no longer fit thinking I will lose the weight but it isn’t coming off as quickly so I need to remember the saying clothes should fit me, I shouldn’t fit them and get rid of the ones that don’t fit me like they used too. I also need to not buy extra of products either b/c I’ve done this with eyeliner and mascara and when I would go to use it, it was all dried up.

I love a small size of fragrance too. I know myself, I love variety, I get tired of a perfume easily. I have many fragrances, so a 100 ml bottle is going to be in my collection for years. I will probably be tired of it before even half of it is finished. Sometimes I still fall for it, sometimes a perfume I want is only available in 100 ml, but most of the time, I end up regretting it. I love 10 or 30 ml bottles.

It's funny, I've been on the opposite trajectory as far as perfume. For years I only got minis or samples because I was trying to figure out what I liked, but recently I've settled down to one favorite scent and bought a full-size bottle. Probably in a couple of years I'll get tired of this one and go back to samples for a while, but not yet

I was at Kohl’s back in October returning an item to Amazon and I asked the guy helping me why there was so many boxes on the side because it wasn’t even after Christmas. He said that it’s common for people to buy Halloween costumes and decor from Amazon use or wear it once then return it. I was shocked that people do this, gross.

k18 is phenomenal, especially the hair mask. It's unequaled. BUT your hair is already lustrous and doesn't look damaged. For you, the benefits of this pricey mask are wasted and you won't think it's worth the money. But if your hair is ever damaged and in need of repair, try it. It only works if used as directed and you won't notice the major difference if you aren't starting with damaged hair.

Last year, I finally managed not to go and get a new phone just because my contract ended and went SIM only.
I have also been looking hard at all my subscriptions and cancelling ones I don't use enough.
I got out of buying beauty boxes and managed for the first year for a while, not to buy a beauty advent calendar last Christmas. I have too many backups / travel sizes already, I really don't need to add in more products that I don't specifically need just because they are cheap. I am trying to whittle down my stash before buying new stuff.
I haven't bought shoes for a while and need to declutter some I own. I love pretty shoes in theory, but I seem to wear boots in the winter, sandals in the summer, and trainers all year. Shoes (especially heels) rarely get worn any time of year, and definitely not enough to justify buying more.
I am cutting back on buying artwork as I am running out of wall and shelf space to display.
Clothes is the area I really need to reign in. I put on weight and for a while needed to buy some new clothes, but I have more than enough in a larger size now and am starting to shift some of the gain to get back to my old wardrobe so definitely want to hold off and save my money for when if/when I shrink below my old clothes.
I wish I could thrift more, but availability of clothes in larger sizes is really poor. I do use ebay outlet stores as my style doesn't change much year on year. If I like the colour/shape/print, I will wear until it no longer fits or gets shabby.

I loved to shop the little cal resale and 2nd hand stores but the clothing items have so much scented laundry products baked into them from clothes dryers, it’s close to impossible to get that stink out.
Even non clothing items soak up the smells of air poisoners. It takes a long time for them to off-gas.
I bought a purse at Target 2.5 years ago. I left it outside because it smelled like the store. Six pounds of baking soda & a half liter of vodka later (it’s pretty great at removing smells like stale ciggie smoke) I can use it.

I don’t really try new products anymore (beauty, personal care, household goods, cleaning supplies). After I first went cruelty free, I spent years trying out new products to replace my old staples. But eventually that just turned into just trying new things for the hell of it.
At this point I have my staples, and I am constantly reminding myself that I don’t need to try new products just because they are new to me.

So I don’t buy holiday decor because I am a bit of a grinch when it comes to Christmas.
Plus I just got my own space and I am trying to just find decor that is my touch on my home.
I also have stopped buying as much stuff because I don’t need it and I have a space that isn’t big enough for a lot of stuff!
Also as I moved into my place, I got a few things from family that they had lying around the place and didn’t use it (like my dining room table that was once my dads and went to my uncles and now it is at my home.)
