For all the stuff the Disney one got wrong, at least it was the basic story and characters of Pinocchio. A True Story was just a scrambled mess of animation with a popular name added at the last second. It's this generation's Tentacolino.

The thing I love about Del Toro’s version is how janky and almost nonhuman Pinocchio moves at the start, as that is basically how a actual wooden puppet would probably move if had no strings or supports attached to it and had to learn how to move it’s self. I also just love the fact they turned the fairy into a biblically accurate angel

The way you described the Guillermo del Toro version makes it sound beautiful & very deep. It is now one of my favourite movies ever! I swear that it could’ve just as easily been called “Pinocchio and the Meaning of Life”, seeing how it opens & ends with a pine cone, a symbol of life & death. The way Pinocchio himself inspires Candlewick & Spazzatura to stand up to abusive figures (the Podesta or Count Volpe respectively), or Geppetto to let Carlo go. He became the hero they all needed (especially Candlewick to be honest, as he knew more about being human than his father ever has or ever will). The way you described Pinocchio himself as a metaphor for art that lives on is so beautiful & should inspire people to come. It is art at a time where most movies today are made just to make money.
By at least 2032 (when it would be 10 years old), I would love “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” to be preserved into the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.

I listen to what this youtuber said about Del Toro's Pinocchio and it's core message about making choices, to teach lessons that'll endure others before our time on this little planet clocks out got me right here. Lemme give a little info about myself.
A few years ago, I was looking through nostalgic content and lost media when I came across this page about a cancelled crossover film that was to star 90s Nicktoons (in the styles of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Lego Movie, and Wreck-it-Ralph) and I was so hooked that I began commenting on how IMO it may have or could work. I believe that was when it sparked something in me, to pitch these stories about rides, escapades; et cetera. I believe the first pitch treatment I ever produced was a crossover between Good Burger and Spongebob, where Plankton steals an oil drum filled to the brim with Ed's sauce after the many fails of trying to obtain the Krabby Patty Formula and Ed and Dexter go under the underwater world of Bikini Bottom to retrieve it; hilarity ensues. But I then lost interest and moved on to making two [incomplete] fanfics starring Popeye and company, one of them revolving around the opening of Universal's Islands of Adventure, featuring characters like The Cat In The Hat, Betty Boop, even Marvel legend himself Stan Lee was gonna be there. Currently, I've been working on a little tale that's in the early stages of treatment; hope I'm able to finish it, but in case you're wondering, it's a fanfic for Project: Playtime, spinoff to Poppy Playtime.
P.S. There were also several other stories I had in mind, but they never came far through brainstorming. One of which is an AAHHH! Real Monsters crossover with the Ghostbusters (not referring to the cartoons) with the Ghostbusters finding themselves in an alternate reality where monsters indeed exist. Paranormal activity involved.
P.P.S. There was also going to be a rendition of Elizabeth Van Lew's time during the American civil war, replacing the real people with the cast from Pepper Ann.
P.P.P.S. Now that I think about it, the first two fanfics pitches I ever produced were the "Ernest & The Simpsons" and "Men In Scissorbeetles/Scissorjuice," with the latter being about the Men In Black during a secret mission gone wrong, accidentally stepping onto a teleporter that transfers both agents into separate universes. But here's the thing: the teleporter was able to trigger some kind of reaction that has both our protagonists (well, one of them an anti-hero) Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands, who Beetlejuice refers to as "Ed" or "Eddie," take the agents place in another attempt to fulfill this failed mission. I even considered have Pee-Wee Herman joining them or being just an honorable mention (or a dishonorable mention, in Beetlejuice's case, given how he had great trauma from the time he tried to manipulate Pee-Wee into saying his name repeatedly and he succeeded, but at a cost of lasting for a few weeks of annoying talking furniture, singing little kiddie songs (views them as s**t), and the ear-grating laughter of said customer), or just a small cameo.

My Pachirisu: And then Disney would have suffered a even worse fate then the unfair box office results this movie unfairly got

As someone who has a life long passion for art, but has a professional career far away from anything similar, returning back to it has always been so terrifying. This movie already helped me to rethink about loss, grief, and death that had defined the beginning of my adulthood. And this additional messaging on art and artists... That said, the Del Toro version was so amazing, and just seeing a few shots of the ending in your review brought the tears back. I found it breathtakingly beautiful, uniquely original, and almost perfect (the songs in the early part of the film felt shoehorned in IMO but this is such a minor quibble). Wow, that reading of Del Toro's Pinocchio as a metaphor for art someone puts in the world was gorgeous. It even ties in nicely with the role of constructive naughtiness and rebellion in its story.
Your breakdown of the clock scene got me thinking that what I got out of it and the early scenes with Gepetto was more that Gepetto is an adult who has never had a child. He's creative and has a childlike quality, nurturing instinct, and love to give, but he's likely never actually done the hard work of raising a human. He's never had to childproof his home or workshop (full of delicate machinery, tools, fire and a GUN), and while he is a good caretaker of a cat and fish, with Pinocchio he's in over his head and naive (at least walk your kid to school for the first time the day after he's just born!).
Which makes the contrast with Del Toro all the more interesting because that Gepetto HAS raised a child, but one who died young and remained a perfect angel in his memory. His challenge is very different, but both of them go through the terrible joy a child can bring.

Videos like this are why you're one of my favorite reviewers :) You put into perspective things that I remember about watching the original Disney adaptation of Pinocchio and never realized before; the characters (whether they be heroes or villains), scenes, and other aspects and really showcase what makes the original so special
And yeah, what you said about people creating things is important. We do need people to showcase their creativities. Even if someone has worries that it won't look as good as they thought, they won't know what to improve on if they don't try; and trying is often the bravest and most beautiful thing a creative person can do :)

Let me say something about the Pauly Shore take. As a Russian by blood, this is not the country's best nor groundbreaking achievement. It made me confounded and dumbstruck that they usually make their films and series with optimism, care, time and dedication. In fact, Yuri Norshtein, one of Russia's prolific and influential animators and storytellers, has dedicated his whole life, alongside his wife and artist whom works for him, to make an animated film that is still in production for 40 years and they were still working on it! Russia's films and series has a lot of words to describe them individually. They are philosophical, satirical, witty, funny, heartwarming, tense, optimistic, bitter, sweet, tragic, charming, haunting, educative, loveable, beautiful, cute, down to earth, imaginative, fantastical, wonderful, deep, thought provoking and memorable. They DO NOT make films and series that they preach about communism. They most CERTAINLY do not. They tell personal stories and also adapt stories from everywhere else, even US. Rather it be folk tales, short stories, fairy tales, children's novels etc. Talking of which here are two recommendations that is about them. One is a 15 part documentary series called "Кто нарисовал нас?" or "Who drew us?" which it tells the history of Russian, Ukrainian, Belorussian and Estonian animation. You can find it on RUclips. The other recommendation is a website, "Animation Obsessive", in which it has a lot of stories, both biographical and behind-the-scenes, of animated films and series of the Russian animation industry. You can simply type, Animation Obsessive, to find it. Before I can finish this comment, I wanted to say something. Russian animation, alongside US, Canada, UK, France, Italy (both recently), a hint of Czech, Poland and China and also Japan were all apart of my life. I cannot imagine how I came about without them. That's all there is, there isn't anymore.

    A. In the 1940s version, Jiminy Cricket has this growth from beginning to end too-
Beginning: can I get a medal too?
Ending: thanks for doing that for him. He deserved to be a real boy.
In the beginning it was about him and what he would get. In the end, it was about someone else. And that's why he gets the medal he didn't even ask about again.
    B. Guillermo del Toro's version is just magic. It's a far cry from both the book and the Disney version, and that's what makes it special- he poured his heart into making this and it shows. My only nitpick is Pinocchio not becoming a real boy at the end, but that's just a small drop in a huge ocean of amazing

Through all his troubles, he stays innocent and the toy donkey parts make sense here, since there should be no real consequences to good deeds, and his perseverance rewards him when these parts are removed. I’m not saying I like it, I’m just saying that’s what it is.

One of the many, many things Del Toro's version of Pinocchio got right that almost all movies produced in the past decade have gotten wrong was that it followed the age-old filmmaking rule of "Show, don't tell!" Other movies have been busily putting agenda ahead of storytelling, which turns everything in them into boring garbage, as audiences are after entertainment, not sermons. The true brilliance of the Del Toro film is that it gets the message out, but does it the right way. Instead of making the mistake of parroting "Fascism is bad! Fascism is bad!" in every other line of dialogue like other films make the mistake of doing, Del Toro's masterpiece simply presents its beautiful, heart-wringing story, shows fascism for what it is, and lets the audience independently come to the conclusion that fascism is, in fact, bad without beating them over the head with the message as if it were a wooden club.

Nobody seems to mention the fact that the war games ARE Toro's Paradise Island, and the new temptation is propaganda. There's a half second scene where the kids, newly brainwashed, have gas masks attached to their face as they're shoved out. Their faces are hidden, losing all humanity as they're overtaken by a long black head with large eyes- sound familiar?
What an amazing way to do the donkey transformation so subtly and so quietly, yet the impact is all the same.

I legit cried at the Del Toro segment. The movie is just a timeless masterpiece indeed. Saying this is the best animated movie of the year is an understatement. It's top 3 best animated movies of all time! Yes, all time. And it's my favorite stop motion animated movie. A film that redefined animation as a medium of storytelling. I used to think Guillermo Del Toro was an overrated director, but Pinocchio made him become one of the greatest directors of all time and now I found new appreciation for his past films. It is a love letter to animation fans. People who haven't seen that movie yet are living under a rock and giving all the attention to Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which is a great movie but doesn't compete with Del Toro's movie. You can call Puss in Boots 2 your favorite all you want, but GDT's Pinocchio is the best!

Edit: It is now my headcanon that the Coachman was another inspiration for the Joker. Mainly the grin, but it's possible. Also, for those who say Gepetto shouldn't have sent Pinocchio to school the day after he was born, I'm willing to defend this since, well, Gepetto's old, and he probably didn't want to be the only thing to teach and prepare Pinocchio.

To me, 40s version is the best adaption of the story while the Del Toro one is the best version of it. Both are amazing in their own right, but the former sticks closer to the source material while the latter puts its own spin on it. Both are amazing in their own ways, but the Del Toro one wins out...albeit by a small margin. Idk, that's just me.
