Thanks again for reacting to my subtitled video!
I used this one, although it's very germany-centric, because there aren't a lot of "short" Hagen Rether videos out there. Mostly he does his program which is, at least, 1 1/2 hours long and I don't have the time to translate it and most people would rather watch 10 minutes than 1 1/2 hours, I suppose.
I would suggest Moritz Neumeier from my channel, if you want a modern clash of cabaret and comedy as well as Rainald Grebe, for musical comedy with an undertone of social commentary

I saw the first show program of Hagen Rether live. He was extremly funny, extremly intelligent, he told us much truth and he played a lot piano. And the show was at the end about 30 minutes longer. - Over the years his show became more and more ... a sad, angry sermon about how shit we all are. - I mean ... I still love him, ... but ... I think he don't love me nore himself anymore. - I don't know how he is right now - but about 10 years ago, he was pretty broken. - I understand that. Nuclear power can not really be labelled as a safe energy source after all the incidents that happened. None of these have been solved (Tschernobyl and Fukoshima are still unsolved!). As soon as something goes wrong with this technology we are incapable of handling it as we all witnessed as these incidents happened. And we still have no solution for all the nuclear waste coming from the plants that will be radioctive for many thousand years.

      That's all true.
However, I personally see the problem more in the fact that nuclear waste is being produced without us having figured out how to store it safely, let alone render it harmless.
This waste continues to emit radiation for millions of years and we simply store it in some shafts, and that's it.
I find that incredibly irresponsible. I don't want to leave shafts full of radioactive waste to future generations.

Ticks is a term that originated and is commonly used in Germany's far-right environment to devalue and insult those who think differently, especially left-wingers and punks.
For decades, May 1st has been the day for demonstrations in favour of workers' rights. However, bloody clashes between protesters and the police are a regular occurrence.
In cities such as Berlin and Hamburg in particular, these protests regularly turn violent. Burning barricades and cars, street battles and a large police presence often dominate the images of Labour Day.

Hagen Rether is from Freiburg. There is a lot of actual ticks, that are especially active in the early summer (may) - which is the reason for promoting vaccinations against FSME (Early Summer Meningococcal Encephalitis) at that time of the year.
I don't think he is talking about extreme left demonstrations here, as 'ticks' is a term for the extreme left, which is almost exclusively used by people of the far right and Hagen definitely doesn't have that kind of view of the world.

Nuclear power in Germany, not even regarding the risks, at least is one of the most expensive, if not THE most expensive source of electricity: Companies get heavily subsidized for building a nuclear power plant, they get subsidized for maintaining them, Germany doesn't have a uranium mine anymore so we need to buy it from elsewhere (like the French, they buy it from Russia), nuclear power isn't "too cheap to meter" but the companies charge you as much as they can, and now that the power plants have been shut down, they want government (i.e., our) money to demolish them. And we don't even have a plan what to do with the radioactive waste and where to put it. Maybe the French will take it because at least they're allowed to have and build nuclear weapons, but they have enough nuclear plants already. So nobody will take it except maybe, wait a second ... president Putin, is that you calling? Hold the line please.

  • @Flo-vn9ty
    @Flo-vn9ty 2 месяца назад +1

Like all forms of energy production, nuclear power has it's pros and cons. The pros are mainly thats a very reliable form of energy production and it has quite low CO2 emissions. The cons are: In the very rare case that something goes wrong, the potential damage is immense. This makes them also quite dangerous in the case of a war (see Ukraine) or a terrorist attack. There still is no really good solution for dealing with the waste. You can't shut it down as long as you have enough energy from other sources and quickly bring it back up when you need it, you have to always keep it running. One con that is overlooked most of the time: Despite many people stating otherwise, nuclear power is extremely expensive.
So I think it's an acceptable option if you have no other options to provide a reliable low emission energy source, but I think if you have other options you are better off without it.

Nuclear power is one of the most expensive way to produce electricity. If you see countries like GB with their on going nuclear power projects are running massively out of budget. See Hinkley Point C project. Sweden and Finnland have stopped their nuclear projects and ambitions because they couldn’t finance it. And they couldn’t find operators. In France there are predictions that the price for a kWh of electricity will rise up to 0.6 € in the next years due to maintenance costs of their nuclear reactor fleet.
And it’s not a safe technology at all. In Germany nuclear powerplants are not able to be insured. Every registered car has higher insured sum than a nuclear powerplant. The risks can not be calculated. And in the end you have to take care of nuclear waste. For millions of years.

12:35 "Nuclear Power is one of the safest forms of producing energy ..."
I disagree to that. Nuclear Power is complicated and you need highly educated personal to handle it. If an accident occurs, the entire area around the reactor will be contaminated for decades to come. And where all the nuclear waste is to be safely stored for the next millennia is still unclear. Doesn't sound very safe.

Hagen Rether is known for his sharp-witted and critical performances in which he scrutinises current political and social issues. He is particularly known for his piano playing during his performances and his calm, thought-provoking performance style. Rether often addresses uncomfortable truths and makes the audience think. That's why sometimes you can't laugh at all, the laughter literally gets stuck in your throat. But the absurd situation with piano and bananas and the calm manner then develops into a very intense situation that is delicately covered in comedy.

Hi Mert, first of all thanks for your Scottish content from Malaysia, I love your special English language and continue to learn through you (because one day I want to speak Scottish with Paolo Nutini :-D). Can I recommend something from Hagen Rether that I found particularly great? He sits at his grand piano and keeps saying that nothing ever changes. His arguments and all the examples he gives are really powerful. Above all: you'll be fine afterwards, everyone will be better afterwards.
By the way, about the translations and subtitles: They are not nearly as good as Hagen Rether knows how to play with words and reinterpret them, which is why only a hint of his talent can come across. Nevertheless, a lot can be translated through his facial expressions, his body signals, so he really is brilliant. It produces nuclear waste which we don't know how to handle. It needs to be stored safely for thousands of years. We don't have tech yet that can guarantee this. So there is a cost for storage and a high risk too.
Also if your country has no uranium mines, you still are dependent on countries to sell it to you as the power plants need a steady supply.

    Hey Mert
The first part was (also) about various scandals involving sexual violence. On one hand in the (I think mainly Catholic) church and then specifically on the Kachelmann scandal.
Jörg Kachelmann was a well-known weatherman in Germany. Maybe THE weatherman. He was accused of rape by an ex-girlfriend. Kachelmann won the trial and all charges were dropped due to lack of evidence. There are “reasonable doubts” about his ex-girlfriend’s allegations. However, Kachelmann had already been judged by the press and the mob.
To this day, Germany is not completely secularized. On the other hand people get upset when it's the same in other (preferably Muslim) countries, as Mr. Rether points out.
To be honest Mr. Rether (and others like Pisper) is not funny. It is a bitter reality.

The tic-joke is imho not about the Antifa-Zecken (antifa-tics).
He combines "german alarmism" about a vage terror threat on german chrismas markets and then in the spring in may, medias change the topic to the horror-tics in nature. I think he's wrong with "first you need to order your ecological energy source or become vegetarian before you are allowed to complain about non-ecological energy or meat production". The problem is that us consumers we can only buy what is offered and practical and affordable to us. Also, we can't actually guarantee that the "ecological power source" is where our power comes from, if only 25 % of our electricity comes from regenerative sources, not everyone can actually get clean power ,so basically we'd all need to consume 75 % less power. That is not going to happen.
We need someone to invest into more clean power plants first, that is less likely to happen, if, say coal is bad for the environment but cheap. Our market system didn't properly account for environmental impact of it and we must make systemic changes first. That probably requires the government to act so that prices more accurately reflect the negative impacts of coal and gas, and we might need investment in building more clean power sources.

The nuclear discussion might become very interesting in the next lets say 15 years. We will find out that we save huge amounts of money. France will find out how expensive it is to strip down a power plant. They have 56 currently. Most of them build to be used for 30 years. And most of them already older than 30 years. So some need to be shut down within the next 15 years. And stripped down. Then they need energy and will buy energy for immense costs from europe. So energy becomes more expensive in europa. And in germany people will say, it's the fault of the greens because they shut down the nuclear power 15 years ago. Which is neither the reason why energy becomes more expense nor was Angela Merkel with green party. But anyway... it must been the greens... ;-)

I'm glad we shut down nuclear power.
Yes, it's a way of producing power that *seemingly* doesn't produce any CO2, but that's without counting in the mining of the radioactive material, which is mostly done with really old machinery and under poor labor qualities, for example in Russia. So no "CO2 free" or "Emission free" energy. Then there's the issue with the waste material. We STILL have troubles with our old storages, and again, if you build new, modern storage solutions - it's gonna emit CO2 en mass and needs tons of space.
And on TOP of that, you have the risk of a malfunction or attack or nature catastrophe that might result in heavy poisoning. I believe the science is far enough that we won't get a repeat of Chernobyl, but an accident like Fukushima? Surely is possible.
So yeah, no thanks. Solar and Wind also emit CO2 in production, but they're safer, cheaper, and overall a better solution.

Quick feedback to pronunciation: the German language doesn't know/use either the voiceless /θ/ or voiced /ð/ 'th'!
When you encounter it pronounce a 't' sometimes followed by an aspirated or voiceless 'h' ( just skip it if you don't know)
So 'Rether' is pronounced 'Reter' and 'Brathering' is pronounced 'Brat-Hering'
When talking to a native that just make them understand you!

In Germany "ticks" is used synonymously for "parasites" to describe far-right or far-left oriented people - depanding on the situation and audience. In this case Hagen is talking about the actual animal. How dangerous ticks are, is different in different locations. Ticks in middle Europe carry a cocktail of diseases in them, that makes them extremely deadly in comparison to f.e. Asia or Africa. So media in Germany tends to warn about ticks and tell people to get vaccinated every year in autumn, if there is nothing more interesting going on. What he is saying is, that news are, and have always been, mostly repeating bs with little to no valuable information.

… I here and then appreciate Hagen Rether… but this part is just arrogant… like »you are all idiots… but not me because I call you out…« that's just arrogant… and not funny.

When I first saw him, I really liked him. Saw him live, too. But then I realized in several steps that I really hate this guy. His arrogance is unbelievable and he can only pick on everybody. As long as its fresh, it can be entertaining, but who likes someone who only whines about everyone and is only mean? His humor is the problem, it is exclusively negative but he combines it with a ultra moralistic attitude where nobody is good enough. Then he started doing things like slowly eating a banana which are only in order to piss off the audience. Why? And all his albums are called Liebe (Love) - he is just so pretentitious and arrogant and insufferable. I only watched the first 2 minutes of your video, sorry, but I can not watch him any longer.

My personal opinion of Hagen Rether: He is a moralizer of the worst kind. He is rarely funny and always presents himself as an apostle with a raised index finger.
