- The Masungi Georeserve in the Philippines is a nature sanctuary near the capital, Metro Manila. It also serves as a vital watershed that helps prevent floods and landslides affecting over 14 million people.
Forest rangers Kuhkan and Moktar Maas, along with reforestation officer John Paul Magana are part of Masungi Georeserve Foundation, defending the lands against illegal resorts and quarries inside the protected zones.

The Philippine government and Filipino people should do everything it can to protect and preserve this critical and important watershed reserve from greedy and corrupt private and government evildoers.
An ordinary citizen can only do so much if the authorities concerned are dawdling in performing their duties. As for protecting watersheds, I don't think the gov't and gov't agencies are too keen in conserving water sources for today and for the future; building dams are more of the priority, rather than ensuring water is stable for the unforeseeable future meriting the construction of such billions of worth loans.
Even the NGP is concentrated on planting mahogany and exotic species, and not investing in the native soecies. That says something.

Hindi importante kung taga Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao o kung saang sulok ng Pilipinas tayo galing. Lahat naman sila Pilipino, yung interviewer ng CNA, yung 2 Georeserve officers tsaka yung family na caretaker mukha namang taga Luzon ah. Ang nakababahala, kapwa Pilipino din ang nang-aabuso, nangangamkam, at nakikipagsabwatan sa mga tiwaling opisyal ng gobyerno na nagsasamantala sa ating mga kagubatan at kabundukan.
Halo-halo mga tao sa lugar na yan, kung saan-saang dako ng Pinas nanggaling mga tao dyan. Halatang wala kang alam.

The best advice you can get in life comes from humble farmers. They understand the hardships and that is why they are keen on protecting and preserving life. The conflict of interests really show how bad our world has become. Kudos to life!

The problem started when Dutere won in 2016 and it emboldens the resort owners and people who work for them to violently repulsed the volunteer conservationist foundation.
This disdain against conservation started when Duterte unofficially begun campaigning pretending he will not run but spewing invectives against the dilawans.
People then started thinking that everything the dilawan has done or approve like this Masungi Geo Contract is a result of corruption.
So they got embolden to rise up against the foundation.
Duterte didn't do anything and left the matter to the corrupt officials in the DENR (environment department)
All of these resort owners and the community leaders who opposed the foundation are DDS or hardcore Duterte supporters so he cannot rule against them.
There is some glimmer of hope now that the new President B Marcos is not as vindictive as Duterte and don't preach violent solution to problems.
Duterte encourages people to be violent. His favorite respond to any problem is "Papatayin ko" or I will kill the culprit.
That's how the people in Masungi got instigated to murder the foundation workers.

Kudos to CNA for this documentary…it pains me too see the situation being encountered by our Forest Rangers…they did a lot of reforestation in this area and for us living here in Metro Manila going to Masungi Georeserve once in a while is a breath of fresh air…knowing that amidst the chaos and development there still a place were we can see forest, greenery and it’s wildlife…I hope this documentary can be seen by government officials from DENR and our police to put up detachments so that unauthorized people will not encroach the protected areas. We went for a tour here in 2020. Its so beautiful, and the organization had done a lot to restore the forest. There are a lot of young trees which proves the previous abuse that this area had received. We were told of their land grabbing and deforestation problems but I didn’t imagine it to be this worse.
I feel so helpless, seeing even the government officials don’t even care. Thank you for this documentary, I hope more people can see this, that’s the only thing I can do for now, to share this video ang promote awareness among my countrymen.

I didn't know this til now. just 47 kilometers from Manila is a thriving rain forest. We should help the rangers. One day I'll go there to volunteer. Let's do this for our children.

This needs to be brought to the attention to the office of the President. I was born in the province of Rizal.. I remember in the 1970's the temperature in Rizal was like in Bagiuo. But because of illegal logging, construction of subdivisions, illegal quarrying...the temperature went up...when it rain communities on the foothills always got flooded. Our citizens needs to be educated that trees plays a very important part in our ecosystem...I salute all the forest rangers.

This disdain against conservation started when Duterte unofficially begun campaigning pretending he will not run but spewing invectives against the dilawans.
People then started thinking that everything the dilawan has done or approve like this Masungi Geo Contract is a result of corruption.
So they got embolden to rise up against the foundation.
Duterte didn't do anything and left the matter to the corrupt officials in the DENR (environment department)
All of these resort owners and the community leaders who opposed the foundation are DDS or hardcore Duterte supporters so he cannot rule against them.
There is some glimmer of hope now that the new President B Marcos is not as vindictive as Duterte and don't preach violent solution to problems.
Duterte encourages people to be violent. His favorite respond to any problem is "Papatayin ko" or I will kill the culprit.
That's how the people in Masungi got instigated to murder the foundation workers.
I found this video by chance, and was very impressed by the ranger and for the lack of interest of the people and the goverment. I am from Costa Rica, in the 80s we were expoting cofee and bananas, we had lost almost 80 % of the forrest, but then we realized we were destroying ourselves by destroying nature, so the goverment started to make changes, and one of them was envairomental educación, since school, and started to create protected áreas, creating laws to protect the remaining forrest, buying prooperties, people's thinking began to chance to the point that today over the 40% of the country are protected areas, hunting was prohibited, and more than 60% of the country is cover by tres, and now days eco turism is our main income we discoverd that nature brings more money than anything else. People from all over the world come to our country every year to see animals, beaches, birds, and so on. Now we the people protect the enviroment we recycle, keep the cities clean, we produce 99% of our electricty with natural resources, water, wind, volcanos, sun, etc, now we are proud of being a green country wherever you go you see trees and wild animals and we know that means life and money. But it took time and a lot of education.
You are lucky because you live in Costa Rica a full democracy in my country it is almost impossible to implement laws that will benefit our own people. Our senate, house if representative is flawed and corrupt they don't care if they will destroy our jobs and environment it's a disgrace!

It's politics. In 2015 the resort owners and the community leaders who are already angry at the foundation since the contract in 1996 became Duterte's number one DDS supporters against the dilawans. That's why when Duterte won they got embolden and nothing happened to them even when they attempted to murder the Foundation workers. Duterte turned a blind eye of the corruption at DENR because the resort owners and community there are his people. President BBM now is reviewing this matter. In the next few months there will be change of government attitude. BBM is not like Duterte and not vindictive against the dilawan.
I guess the best way that we can do to help them is to share this video ... over and over and over for the entire country the Philippines and every filipinos made aware of this scenario.

It's definitely an organized effort by rich knowledgeable people, and I won't be surprised if the local government units are in on it. They were able to construct what are clearly pools with no land title or construction permit, they are operating as a tourist destination with no DENR permits like the permit to operate, and they even knew what specific cases could be filed against the rangers. Sadly, in our country, it's always the rich and corrupt who win.

The Philippines Department of Interior (DILG) has already setup a Local Police detachment in the area after a one-week intrusion of an armed group in the area. I was hoping that news has already been included in this video documentary.

Forest Rangers are protecting the Watershed. I think they have the authority to inform illegal person or persons building private Resorts there or cutting trees to make charcoal to answer to the Authorities. No illegal claims should be honored. Conservation personnel have the right and should be protected by the law as they patrol the area.
This Watershed(last one in Mla) needs protection. Land Grubbers have no right to live there..IF this area has to be saved. More trees planted. It is a beautiful place and speaks well of the leadership in the pHILIPPINES if developed as such.
Unfortunately there's that group of murderers surrounding them. What should be done is for the DENR TO TAKE ACTION. Hindi yung puro pagpapa-alsa lang ng buhok. A wall should be made, military outposts should be deployed, illegal settlers must be evicted. But instead they choose to DO NOTHING.

I think the government should provide good program and some assistance to the forest ranger they are important for protection of our forest here in the Philippines I've seen the change of our forest because of some business minded people who doesn't care about what can be destroyed for money a decent uniform ID and self protection device and body camera should be provided for a forest ranger as they work or roam around the forest.
The problem started when Dutere won in 2016 and it emboldens the resort owners and people who work for them to violently repulsed the volunteer conservationist foundation.
This disdain against conservation started when Duterte unofficially begun campaigning pretending he will not run but spewing invectives against the dilawans.
People then started thinking that everything the dilawan has done or approve like this Masungi Geo Contract is a result of corruption.
So they got embolden to rise up against the foundation.
Duterte didn't do anything and left the matter to the corrupt officials in the DENR (environment department)
All of these resort owners and the community leaders who opposed the foundation are DDS or hardcore Duterte supporters so he cannot rule against them.
There is some glimmer of hope now that the new President B Marcos is not as vindictive as Duterte and don't preach violent solution to problems.
Duterte encourages people to be violent. His favorite respond to any problem is "Papatayin ko" or I will kill the culprit.
That's how the people in Masungi got instigated to murder the foundation workers.

there's got to be a solution to the problem everyone has to protect their land in every country it's critical... in Washington state and Oregon State they have designated areas where the trees are replanted and cut down every 7 years allowing the old growth to not be disturbed it's too bad they can't do that in the Philippines

The problem started when Dutere won in 2016 and it emboldens the resort owners and people who work for them to violently repulsed the volunteer conservationist foundation.
This disdain against conservation started when Duterte unofficially begun campaigning pretending he will not run but spewing invectives against the dilawans.
People then started thinking that everything the dilawan has done or approve like this Masungi Geo Contract is a result of corruption.
So they got embolden to rise up against the foundation.
Duterte didn't do anything and left the matter to the corrupt officials in the DENR (environment department)
All of these resort owners and the community leaders who opposed the foundation are DDS or hardcore Duterte supporters so he cannot rule against them.
There is some glimmer of hope now that the new President B Marcos is not as vindictive as Duterte and don't preach violent solution to problems.
Duterte encourages people to be violent. His favorite respond to any problem is "Papatayin ko" or I will kill the culprit.
That's how the people in Masungi got instigated to murder the foundation workers.

The Filipino people have the rights to preserve what is left in Manila to sustain ecology and let us protect those animals that are already there. When I recently visited Manila. I flew over these beautiful forests before landing. I was moved by how beautiful they are. I also know how corruption is still rife in the PH. I also know that in the PH even if a person is caught red handed they will never admit they are wrong and may actually try to sue the person or people who caught them. It saddens me that this is happening.
